new farrow and ball colours/decorating hall

manchurian · 07/02/2011 10:14

Has anybody tried out any of the new farrow and ball colours yet?

I'm thinking about decorating my hall London Stone below dado with the new Oxford Stone above, but the hall at the moment is very white and I'm finding such a big change hard to imagine all down the hall and up the stairs and landing.

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks

We must have immpecable taste SameoldJollster.Grin

I'm thinking of using "Mizzle" for the coving in my dining room. The room itself is Smoke Green, so I'm hoping that the green tinge in Mizzle will complement it.

Littlefish · 07/02/2011 21:12

I also have Elephants Breath on the walls in my sitting room, with Skimming Stones for the coving.

hester · 07/02/2011 23:05

Mizzle is described as a blue grey, but looks more green to me - has anyone tried it?

I'm longing to use Brassica in the bathroom, with white brick tiles and a grey rubber floor. (Blithely ignoring the fact that I can't afford to paint a matchbox right now...)

beachyhead · 07/02/2011 23:12

Get the tester pots and a roll of lining paper. Paint big slabs and sellotape them to all four walls.. look in all lights...

I have elephants breath in my hall and Bone in my sitting room... Lime white in the kitchen and james white on the white work outside the kitchen.....

In the playroom, I just took the curtains to Brewers and they matched the pale colour and made me a wall colour which is fab....

I'm keen to try calluna too, have ordered a sample pot and eagerly awaiting its arrival (sad f&b fan emoticon!), fancy it for spare bedroom but not sure what to put with it especially carpet colour

herhonesty · 08/02/2011 02:22

house and garden has a very good f and b supplement this month profiling new colours btw... its very good!

Littlefish · 08/02/2011 08:39

Hester - I haven't tried Mizzle on my walls, but it certainly looked greenish to me when I looked at the large colour card in the shop.

What a great thread! Just parking myself here for a bit.
Can I pick your brains. Am about to decorate new house throughout so reading the FB colour suggestions with interest.
Any suggestions for a good colour for a sitting room - it is a double room (knocked dining and sitting room together) in a Victorian semi - we are putting in darkish stained oak flooring, so I need a light colour, but want to avoid the light beige kind of colour I see in so many houses. Also keen to paint wood work something other that white - anyone done that with success?
Off to buy H and G..........

Mirage · 08/02/2011 13:34

hester, that is exactly what I am planning for our bathroom-pale grey floor, white rectangular tiles, calluna woodwork and eith pelt or brassica on the walls.I'm wondering if it is worth driving 24 miles to pick up sample pots and H&G today,or to go later in the week when I have more time.

freshmint · 08/02/2011 13:55

cornforth white twinmum? very pale grey/white. or look at elephants' breath which I keep banging on about which although darker is still quite light. My hall floors are dark wood and it looks lovely. Also with a big room you can have a darker colour and it doesn't look as dark as it would be in a small one...

otherwise hmmm skimming stone?

you need to move towards greyer colours rather than brown beige (very noughties) IMO.

twinmumplus1inthetum · 08/02/2011 17:04

Thanks for the ideas freshmint.

I forgot to mention I am colourblind (though not completely) so I find choosing colours hard. Something can look green to me that might look blue to everyone else.
Our last house ended up predominantly 'Sand', which is a paint library colour as I lacked the confidence to go for anything else, but am determined this time not to end up with beige house!

freshmint · 08/02/2011 17:19

ah!
well actually one thing you could do is take pics of the inside of your house, take them to a f&b shop and ask for advice. Tell them what you've just said. Then take their recommendations, buy the sample pots, paint up some swatches and ask all your mates (and/or your dh) if the ones you like are OK

I picked the colour of our dining room from 200 miles away on holiday by phoning a shop and asking them what they thought (the painters announced they had time to do another room). The F&B guy was very nice and made a great choice!

hester · 08/02/2011 21:33

Ooh, Mirage, will you let me know how it turns out?

Mirage · 09/02/2011 14:12

Yes,will do.Bathroom fitter coming to check out job in an hour or so.Am quite excited as have lived with a crap,or half finished bathroom for nearly 6 years now.

Littlefish · 12/02/2011 15:42

I now have tester pots of Mizzle, Calluna and about 5 other colours! Some for our bedroom/ensuite and some for the coving in the dining room, to go with Green Smoke.

belsize77 · 12/02/2011 19:34

I have a tester pot of brassica. It is a really lovely colour but do people think it would go with white/ grey carerra marble brick tiles and and a blue pearl granite floor in a downstairs loo (that was previously a Victorian cupboard - in other words vvv small) I am trying to transform it from its current solitary confinement cell look...

Littlefish · 12/02/2011 20:17

Calluna is beautiful.

hester · 12/02/2011 22:30

Is Calluna a pale mauvey pink?

Littlefish · 13/02/2011 10:17

I would say less pink, and more grey.

mauvey/grey sums it up I think. Sort of like a cloudy sky while it's raining.

hester · 13/02/2011 21:00

OH no, now I'm itching to get hold of some.

My name is hester and I am a F&B addict.

missbloomsbury · 26/02/2011 18:27

Ladies, I've been a F&B fan for many years. First used their colours in 1992! I lived in London and did up 3 London properties with F&B but now am in the country in a fab Arts & Crafts house. Don't ignore the joys of the F&B yellow/brown palettes. You mention Dorset Cream which is great. But for a new edgy impact, try Cats Paw. It has an old gold effect and looks fantastic with all natural wood. Tallow is great and 'pops' in a dark north facing room and Mouse's Back is so sophisticated in a well lit room. Again, mahogany furniture looks really good against it.

hotchoc · 02/09/2011 18:36

hi
just loved reading this post, did anyone use the mizzle? wonder if you found it a calm colour? warm? thinking about it for my bathroom and the sample is quite good but I am not 100% - it looks really grey which is not a bad thing but I do not want it to seem dark if you know what I mean.
thanks, think I might be a F&B addict too

A big vote for mizzle from me - I have just painted my bathroom using mizzle (with white above the picture rail, white woodwork and tiles, and light grey floor) and it looks fantastic. Definitely a green-grey colour, very strong but muted, if that makes sense. Very calming.

I think floor to ceiling would be a bit overpowering in a small room - my bathroom is not huge - but with the picture rail and white at one end with the bath/shower tiles it's absolutely fine.
