No water frozen pipes?

goingroundthebend4 · 18/12/2010 06:40

Turnred on hotwater tap and zilch , though cold water still coming for now

Odd set up hotwater is by oil boiler which is not locate din the house is located in converted stand alone garage/workshop about 15 foot from house ( rented property and cant get into boiler till later as workshop is part of the breakdown yard) and then heats the hotwater and pumps to the house .
Heating is working so not that so guessing its the pipes outside that are frozen anything can do to defrost them ther eunder patio

Or do i just have to pray for a thaw soon

Don't think there is anything you can do until the yard opens - then you can check that the problem isn't a simple thing - like they turned off the pipes (in error hopefully).

(Especially) - If you have DC's then get in touch with the landlord soonest - even if the pipes are just frozen there is no guarantee that a thaw will fix things - frozen pipes often burst. Hopefully not - but this could be a biggish job to fix and you want it sorted before everyone disappears for their hols.

Probably would suggest you leave the tap slightly open / on - it is (remotely) possible that water could gradually seep through and thaw things out.

goingroundthebend4 · 18/12/2010 07:02

Hmm wil check stopcock is open no ones turned of in the house but boilers working as heating has come on and has been in low overnight but am thinking it's the pipes outdoors :( guess not even lot the landlird can do about that

I'm screwed arnt I checks out all local pools for shower arrangements

iamnotreallysure · 18/12/2010 07:09

50 / 50 on someone has turned something off they shouldn't have or frozen - I guess.

But have a [fbear] just to keep you going until daylight / yard opening.

And yes - do look at your options - scuzzy Xmas is not an attractive option unless you have a bunch of DS's who would love the chance....Xmas Grin

iamnotreallysure · 18/12/2010 07:13

Getting it fixed may be disruptive and time consuming but not necessarily hard with the right equipment / tools / supplies / experience.

def play helpless female with the guys in the yard (presuming appropriate - emoticom). They are usually salt of the earth types who will do anything to help in a difficult situation.

iamnotreallysure · 18/12/2010 07:21

If your water is not metered (expense concerns) it may be worth running cold water reasonably often (running water is harder to freeze) so you do not lose both. Heating should be OK as it is usually a sealed system with additives - but as I think you posted may be worth keeping on low 24 / 7 until you get hot water sorted.

goingroundthebend4 · 18/12/2010 07:25

Thank you

Till few months ago ds2 would loved that gad to send him to shower now can't get him out of it he discovered girls

Oh I'm going to play the helpless female card with yard guys and then if not phone landlord and yell politley ask that he gets his arse here Now!! pops over

OP posts:
iamnotreallysure · 18/12/2010 07:29

Got to be a pain though - but your sense of humour will get it sorted for sure.

Sorry I can't give more re-assurance or practical help - but here are some more
Xmas pom Bear to keep you all going until later

[fbear][fbear][fbear][fbear][fbear]

iamnotreallysure · 18/12/2010 07:30

Def keep turning hot tap on and off from time to time - it may fix itself if anything is flowing through

goingroundthebend4 · 18/12/2010 10:27

Well just checked none of us have water on the site my house the yard ,workshop or place across the lane seems the main water pipe under has frozen :( nothing can do about it

water board aware but said pipes here close to surface and as it's act of nature extreme weather nothing they can do about it

OP posts:
GentleOtter · 18/12/2010 10:41

If you have a public supply then don't accept that the water board will do nothing, especially if a lot of people are affected. Ask for a bowser or emergency supplies to keep you going until the thaw sets in.

If you are on a private supply then your landlord may be responsible (unless it is written in your lease that he is not)

Good luck and I hope your water comes on soon.

goingroundthebend4 · 18/12/2010 11:01

Sadly not lot of people affected just 2 houses yard have cold water in large tank so they are ok.Closing down today to

When you think it can't get worse....

anywhere you can go and stay near you? any families and friends?

Really sorry - but hoping for the best - keep us updated and let us know if anything anyone can do to help...

goingroundthebend4 · 19/12/2010 06:51

No sadly nowhere to go my mum stepdad only have 2 bed and his elderley mum lives with them

and new to area other friends I have are only in small properties no room for me and 4 dc to land on them to broke for hotel to

but have couple of plug in oil filled radiators as after hassle with boiler over the last few months did not want to rely on it so will be warmish but bit on smelly side once can travel will all go to mums for hot baths or to the swimming pool for showers or we shall just stink

Landlords due to come out look today but not fancying chances of being fixed before Xmas now

OP posts:
iamnotreallysure · 19/12/2010 07:00

I am sorry there isn't an easy option - but glad it is not total disaster. Stll pretty s..t and I am sorry about that.

I hope the landlord is switched on with good contacts, haven't rented for years myself so can't advise - but I would be seeking advice on what Landlords responsibilities are under the circumstances and whether (as a minimum) you can get a reduction in rent to cover extra electric costs of the radiators?

As a minimum you seem together enough and in a good enough state of mind to make it an adventure - so a family story to share and tell for later years.

Hope landlord is of the better kind.

GentleOtter · 19/12/2010 08:00

goingroundthebend - it is possible to get some running water if the tank is filled manually but it is a real pita and has to be done each day.
Failing that, ask your landlord to supply you with the big 25 litre containers filled with water.
It is expensive but keep water boiling all the time using anything you can to hold the water in.
Children can have a bath standing up in a basin in front of the fire and the water used to fill the toilet cistern.

Phone your water authority asap (there should be an emergency number) and ask for help.

I know it is very trying but try to keep positive and perhaps you could all get to the local swimming pool for showers? That is good for making you feel much better.

I hope your water gets fixed. Good luck.

goingroundthebend4 · 19/12/2010 08:37

ty for replys

Gentle the tank has gone to it seems think was old tank and this weather was the last straw for it

yes the little 2 will be able to do tht though dont think i get ds1 and ds2 standing in front of fire though be fun trying to squeeze them in ( both 6 footers) but there just be strip washes for them and me

Water board have called but there unable to help due to the extreme weatherHmm

be Christmas we wont forget but kids are not worried about it they just want to play in the snow

OP posts:
GentleOtter · 19/12/2010 09:12

I think too many organisations are using the extreme weather as an excuse rather than go the extra mile and try to help. Angry

At the very least, they ought to issue you with bottled drinking water for the younger children.

Perhaps your MP might be able to persuade the water board to help you?

iamnotreallysure · 19/12/2010 09:40

Be shameless and involve media, MP or whatever is necessary to put pressure on the Water Co & landliord - they can fix this is they feel they need to for PR reasons.

festiveflashingmammaries · 19/12/2010 09:50

Your pump has probably died by the sound of it. If you have a combi boiler with an integral pump the pump will be inside the boiler housing itself. Try tapping it with a spanner or similar ..... it might free up. The other thing to do is to check the power supply to the pump itself. If it is on a fused spur, the fuse may just need changing

goingroundthebend4 · 19/12/2010 10:08

Have water coming phoned up water company then asked fir a senior person on their emergency help line when he trotted out the extreme weather line .U trotted out the well I'm sure papers will love it young dc without water oh and a disabled child to.

Just had call back water being dispatched

Festive

Not combi boiler it's oil fired some industrial sort was new as last year before I moved in the pipes in house froze and flooded place

the boiler is in workshop/garage in yard gave no access to it normally.Mind boilers been right pita since live here.

LL is coming over to have s look so hopefully be something that be fixed before Xmas
