A real one to burn stuff or a pretend one to look nice?

cyb · 26/09/2010 12:23

you could get a woodburner or go for gas realistic

cyb · 26/09/2010 12:25

How does the smoke go without a chimney breast though? I would LOVE a wood burner

this one for example (we call it the vag Wink

AllThreeWays · 26/09/2010 12:27

What about one of those ones that burn Methylated spirits?
You get real flame, doesn't need to be flued, are environmentally friendly and are quite effective.

bronze · 26/09/2010 12:27

its easier if you have an outside wall you just have to have the flu on display

KatyMac · 26/09/2010 12:29

Wood burner is fine without a chimney

You just have a stove pipe which goes out through the wall passes through another room it

It is possible on an inside wall & if it can act as a bit of central heating......but building regs can be complicated

AllThreeWays · 26/09/2010 12:30

like these

cyb · 26/09/2010 12:31

Wow bronze that really is like someone's nethers.

It would be on a joined wall with our semi detatched neighbours but I suppose the flue could go sideways to the external wall?

Think I ma searching for the right thing now online 'flueless gas fires'

OP posts:
bronze · 26/09/2010 12:38

there are other nicer versions, just that one always make me laugh as I'm sure the desingers/sellers have no idea better versions here

DurhamDurham · 26/09/2010 12:40

What about one of those wall mounted ones which are very trendy at the minute, they don't take up any floor space. I'm not sure whether I like them or not. My friend has one in her new home and it does look good, not sure they'd look so good in older style rooms/properties.

cyb · 26/09/2010 12:48

I've FOUND IT

pout :)

noddyholder · 26/09/2010 13:18

Yes you need flueless gas for this otherwise a huge job to construct a chimney etc.i built a fake chikmey breast from reclaimed bricks in a room without and eventuall fitted a gas fire and it looked great. We were an end house so the pipework could have been done for real but it was too expensive. There is a new electric stove that has just been produced which is the best simple solution I have seen you fill a little tank with water and it produces a steam effect over logs which is lovely at night.

noddyholder · 26/09/2010 13:21

Esse do a contemporary looking one which sometimes looks better than trying for traditional and it looking fake iygwim. Will have a look in my folders and post later if I find anything

HerHonesty · 26/09/2010 14:17

is it an outside wall?

dinkystinky · 26/09/2010 14:18

You could get a flueless fireplace - but they are ££££s.

cyb · 26/09/2010 15:09

sorry All3ways! Didn't click your link.

I am very excited about the prospect of a gel one! Might even get one for dining room at back of house too....as long as gel fuel isn't too £££££

OP posts:
noddyholder · 26/09/2010 15:12

The gel ones are not good as a long term thing.they do smell and look fake-y

cyb · 26/09/2010 15:14

They may have moved on a bit but I had one about 5/6 yrs ago and only lit it for brief periods when agents/viewings were taking place. It was pretty and people did like the 'effect' but when I used it for longer than 15 mins when I hosted my book group we could all smell it after a while a bit liek lighter fuel. You need adequate ventilation but even that didn't help.Smeg do a retro gas one which is not to everyones taste but does gi=ve off a good heat.

cyb · 26/09/2010 15:31

Ack. Just looked at Smeg one online...not sure
