What sort of bathroom tiles are people putting in these days?

We're looking at tiles for our bathroom, and I have no idea what the general trends are...what is in and what is out? Big tiles, stone effect, mosaics, brick shaped tiles? Matt or high shine? Colours or plain?
I'm thinking about brick shaped tiles, put on long ways with joints staggered, possibly matt cream, all over. Too boring? Should I have a band of 'accent' colour, or is that outdated?!
It's a small bathroom which will get the evening sun, just bath with shower over, and a sink.
We have very hard water here (lots of limescale) so I think glossy tiles would be a mistake?
Ladies with style, what do you think? Grin

We've gone for the big limestone tiles in one bathroom but big white rectangle tiles in the other with thinner black tiles as a middle border. TBH it's what you like really although I'm not sure if the old avocado bathroom suite is still in fashion! Good luck :)

mumoverseas · 07/08/2010 18:14

We're are just having a bathroom re-fitted but it is tiny so I decided to stick with just white tiles in a glossy finish which hopefully will look nice and I can just brighten it up a bit with some accessories

Heartsease · 07/08/2010 18:51

We are going for glossy white tiles with a slight ripply bump, in a very small bathroom. I am also slightly worried about limescale, though, so will be watching your thread for any wisdom on that.

I also am humming and hawing about borders. We will probably go for a border of small square, pale greenish glass mosaics (the flat ones, not bumpy or with any kind of fancy effect, and all the same colour rather than assorted).

linspins · 07/08/2010 19:36

About the limescale - we had glossy beautiful tiles at our last house, some coloured, some plain white, and the coloured glossy ones showed the limescale lots, whereas the white ones didn't so much. It was still there, but not so noticeable. I am wondering about water softeners that you fit to the water pipes, and am about to do a search for that

I do fancy the tiles with the ripply bump, but DH not so keen. We found a rather nice tile today, 10cm x 20 cm, white, matt, and some very pale blue ones the same. Thinking of sticking them on in a brick pattern effect maybe, with a band of the blue ones.

(Liketotalk, we have an avocado plastic suite right now, can't wait to rip it out!!)

We have just put some bigger stoney coloured ones in but they are cermic iyswim (easier to cut apparently). If you look on my profile you can sort of see them (will put em on in a jiffy).

AuntieMaggie · 07/08/2010 19:48

Ours are similar to Nappy's...

One word of advice.. look everywhere to price up - B&Q ended up being cheaper even with other places discounts and make sure you only buy if you really like them!

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 07/08/2010 19:58

yes we picked about 5 the sameish with slight variations and took samples home free to lay about the bathroom and in different light to the shop the ones we thought we liked the most had a green tinge in our bathroom - luckily for my tight dh the ones i picked were actually the cheapest.

Heartsease · 07/08/2010 20:09

Oh yes, definitely try them at home.

After weeks of looking, we took one home which we thought was The One, with a subtle mottled effect. It looked like mould and limescale in our north facing room.

linspins · 07/08/2010 21:00

Do you reckon a blue/white is a bit of a cliche in a bathroom? The blue I like is really soft and pale, and the bathroom would mostly be white. Our towels are currently biscuity (beige? Grin ) but this would probably still be ok.

Laughing at the 'mould' tiles Heartsease!

Whoops, why does that double thing happen sometimes?

Anything but beige!Viewed endless houses all had beige and white bathrooms

CarGirl · 07/08/2010 21:07

We have got wet walls instead of tiles and I love it. No grout to go manky Grin.

We have got very hard water and even with the black pixels wetwall they look okay, just blade them down after each shower (don't have a bath) and clean once a fortnight. Have only got one and a bit walls with wetwall on, a splash back on the sink and the rest painted white, dark slate floor.

minimlist seem to be very in, some bathroom porn here www.roperrhodes.co.uk/

Heartsease · 07/08/2010 21:09

We thought we could team them with a 'body hair, splashes and dust' effect flooring Grin.

I also refused to consider anything beige.

I think white with a soft pale blue border would be lovely, and not a cliche unless you also have loads of dolphin themed accessories or summat. Pale blue is a really elegant complement with biscuity towels, in my opinion.

noddyholder · 07/08/2010 21:22

I like certain blues too.I am about to do a new bathroom and haven't decided yet either

linspins · 07/08/2010 21:32

All this talk of bathrooms makes me really miss my old bathroom from our last house. We did a cool 'art deco' style tiling pattern, with white and two different shades of turquoise brick shaped tiles laid vertically.
Anything is going to be better than the green plastic suite, flowerey tiles and revolting swirly carpet... (it really is a hair and dust floor heartsease!)

Heartsease · 07/08/2010 21:46

I like an art deco vibe in a bathroom. I am currently reading this book and loving the 1930s colour combinations, though I would never go for a literal recreation.

Linspins have you seen ? I think ours pre-dates avocado (pic on profile if you want to see). Orange walls. Acid yellow 1950s cistern. Mmm.

linspins · 08/08/2010 10:37

Just watched the Mitchell and Webb clip - really funny! (although I did wince a tiny bit at the ending...possibly too far... Grin ) Your bathroom certainly needs a makeover Heartsease, but it's bigger than ours!
I had a look this morning in daylight at the white tiles I thought I liked, and they are grey-er than I'd like. Bother.

I think large and rectangular are both in at the moment, though don't forget that will make it look dated eventually! I was going to go for a colour but think we'll just have white tiles - possibly with bumpy border - so that it's easy to change the look by changing the paint colour. As a slattern busy mum, I was also wondering whether matt tiles would show water marks/limescale etc less but have never seen any in the flesh so might be horrible.

Was also considering blue but wondering whether it was too cliched! I think blue and biscuit is lovely together though :)

Loved the M&W sketch Grin - have forwarded it to someone who might be interested in buying our avocado suite when it comes out, as they were bemoaning the clinicalness (? is that a word?) of everyone choosing white suites.

linspins · 09/08/2010 08:24

My goodness Ditavoncheese, someone wants to buy your avocado suite??? Having said that, in our last house we had a pink suite originally, and it was quite nice!! This was our first house and we had NO money, so we just painted the walls white and then stencilled huge pink circles on them, in different pink shades. It felt like being surrounded by pink bubbles on the walls at bathtime. Very warm feeling.
(Then of course a few years later we put in a white suite...as you do...)

OP posts:
DitaVonCheese · 09/08/2010 08:28

Lol, yes and no ... It finished yesterday with no bids (starting price 99p) but he's said he may be interested in the suite if he's not allowed to take his current one with him when he moves house, and would like the accessories either way. I am becoming more attached to ours and am sure they will be super-cool in a few years time, but for now it's coming out!

SaggyHairyArse · 09/08/2010 09:27

I like pink bathroom suits, and primrose yellow too (not so keen on advacado or burgandy tho).

I think blue is fine for a bathroom as long as it's not a duck/ocean theme (unless a childrens bathroom at a push). We have a white ensuite with tiles that have a a blue and pink delicate flower which people assume we are removing but I don't mind them Hmm

I think styalised themes and trends will come a thing of the past, if it is your home and you are not doing it up to sell on as investment then choose what you like. Beige boxes are boring and bland.

ElusiveMoose · 09/08/2010 21:41

We're just having a new wetroom put in our loft conversion. Having dark grey, matt, thin rectangular tiles on the walls (lined up, not brickwork - though I like brickwork too), square dark grey on the floor (all ceramic), and then pale marble mosaic on the wet room floor and splash back on the basic. Rest of the room will be white.

twolittledarlings · 09/08/2010 22:24

We've just had the bathroom done as I like it to be bright and airy, we have gone for white brick shaped bevelled tiles - floor to ceiling with one thin pencil black band all round the middle.

It goes with the porcelain creamy white stone floor tiles and really brightens up the room.

We had this conbination done in our old house last year and as we have just moved into our new house, we decided to have the same thing also with the same Heritage Victorian suite too.

linspins · 10/08/2010 09:54

Elusive, yours sounds very elegant and grown up!

Twolittle, are your bevelled tiles matt or gloss? I do like bevelled tiles. I need my bathroom to be bright too, as it's TINY.
