Any nice areas to live around London?

Do you know any nice places to live around london, where I could get a 2 bedroom flat/house with garden for under 1200pcm?

I don't have a car, so it should have good transport links too. I don't need to go to London everyday, only 2-3 days per week.

Do you mean inside the M25 or outside?

LadySanders · 04/08/2010 14:48

somewhere along the eastern end of the central line you could get what you're looking for... try woodford / loughton / epping

Mamumu · 04/08/2010 17:21

cece, I have no idea. I mean a place from where I can get to London in less than an hour (using public transport), that has good schools and nice green spaces & shops, restaurants...

St Albans. Fast trains to London and plenty of 2 bed terraces to rent for around £1200 per month.

Mamumu · 04/08/2010 17:59

Thanks MrsJohnDeere...

What can you tell me about Dulwich? Is it nice there? Are there any good schools?

another one

I've just moved to Sevenoaks. A move predicated by a need for good schools, green space and easy commute. So far so good. Primaries are excellent and grammars are still in force. On the downside, outside of London so no tube and a more expensive commute. You'll definitly find a two bed in your budget though.

cece · 04/08/2010 21:57

Woking station

Can highly recommend Sevenoaks. Lovely individual shops, great links into London, good primary schools and also grammer school for secondary, beautiful deer park. i would never move from here its fab

What about Bromley? Found these with just a rightmove search on Bromley/House and price range.

Lovely local park and shops in Chatterton Road.

Just round the corner.

Bromley is technically a london borough, but seems to like to consider itself "Kent"!

The schools are generally good.

The transport links from Bromley South pretty good.

If you want more urban, then Beckenham/Anerley might be do-able - Anerley in particular has advantage of different train lines.

Or more suburban, then possibly Petts Wood (good trains) or Orpington (Charing Cross and Victoria line).

Mamumu · 04/08/2010 23:19

Thanks you mumsnetters!!! XD I will have a look at these areas, I like the way it sounds. Thanks Pooka, for searching these properties!

You are FANTASTIC!

How far is Sevenoaks from central London? How long would it take by public transport?

How about Streatham? I have heard that it's not very nice, but it's affordable and there's a good school there (I think). Is it really that horrible?

I heart Streatham, though I've just moved from there to West Norwood, but only because DH fell In Love with our new house and had to have it. Streatham and especially Streatham Hill has lots of wonderful points for young families like lots of parks and cafes. And there are a few good/outstanding schools but competition is VERY high so you need to basically live on the doorstep to get in. It is very 'urban' though, but a great mix and you certainly know you are living in London.

Dulwich is very nice if you are looking for something more sedate but you won't get as much for your money. Bear in mind that Dulwich Village, East Dulwich and West Dulwich all have different vibes. Dulwich Village has fabulous schools.

LadySanders · 05/08/2010 13:59

Used to live in Dulwich Village.... primary school is good but oversubscribed and (10 years ago at any rate) you have to be a regular churchgoer. Secondary schools only good if you go private.

starmucks · 05/08/2010 20:24

Sevenoaks to Charing Cross is about 36mins. There's a fast train into London Bridge which is about 26mins. I work on Piccadilly and it takes about an hour door to door.

RobynLou · 05/08/2010 20:25

how about harrow, esp pinner? lovely area, good schools, on the met line so easy into london etc....

emsyj · 05/08/2010 20:46

Dulwich is lovely.

We rented a 2 bed house with a garden in Blackheath for £1200pcm, 10 mins' walk from Westcombe Park station (about 20 mins to Charing X and on a bus route into Westminster, also 15 mins on the bus from North Greenwich tube). It was by the Royal Standard, so not Blackheath village (which is posher and more expensive) but still nice and very accessible for central London. Lots of nice terraced Victorian houses.

No idea about schools in that area though, sorry. It was just the two of us when we lived there (until about a year ago).

WillbeanChariot · 05/08/2010 22:08

I second Pinner. Nice area, good transport, tons of green space and you get a lot of house for your money. Lots going on for little ones too.

Mamumu · 05/08/2010 22:10

starmucks, isn't the train very expensive? Have you got a pass?

ANd RobynLou, isn't Harrow a bit dodgy and dangerous? -or maybe I'm mistaking it for Hounslow?

OP posts:
kalo12 · 05/08/2010 22:15

east dulwich is really nice but might be slightly more expensive than 1200 to get a nice garden. but honor oak is a good compromise and now got the east london line. it will be the new east dulwich, but you could get a 3 bed house and garden for 1200. nice primary there too. i would buy there - rent in east dulwich at mo, pay 1200 but only got tiny alleyway outside and two small bedrooms. but i am going to move out of london soon

WillbeanChariot · 06/08/2010 09:34

Harrow is not at all dodgy and dangerous!

It has its posh bits and less posh bits like any London borough, but it's mostly quite suburban and harmless. Bits of Hillingdon are also nice, like Ruislip.

starmucks · 08/08/2010 09:02

The commute works out at about £250 a month, which include a travel pass that can be used on tubes/buses etc. I have a season ticket loan from work, so they debit it from my salary.
