It's that time of year again... how is everyone's school fee increase looking?
I'm hoping for under 5% (secondary)

Literally just got the email, 3.9% not as high as previous years. So glad it’s his last year.

StripesandSpaniels · 17/04/2026 17:07

Just found out and it’s 4.25% here, was expecting more. Last year was 11% and not all VAT passed on. Although now £12950 a term for year 9 to 11 and £13150 for years 12 and 13.

My DS school is £21k per year, thankfully in S6 so won’t be impacted by fee increase.

Last year they didn’t increase fees as the year before we had VAT and 6% increase.

Southern shires prices for a decent selective.

GentlePearlBear · 18/04/2026 13:52

4% - now £14,097 a term from September - day pupil at selective boarding school

Cyberjammies · 18/04/2026 14:44

I’m so glad we are out of that now! Finally…. I look back and wonder whether it was all worth the sacrifice to be honest! I feel like we would be massively better financial position if we hadn’t done it! It was fine 10 years ago but salaries haven’t increased as much as the fees did each year, plus the school trips and their increases too. Last year our schools both added 5% on, but that was our last year.

678socks · 20/04/2026 22:46

We are still waiting to hear, still slightly blows my mind that it is deemed standard to accept a place way before knowing what the actual fees are!!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/04/2026 07:56

These are so late that you’re already tied into next term not knowing how much you’ll be paying. I find that astonishing too.

5.9%... it's not ideal as my salary is not going up by anything like that percentage

Well exactly and definitely not post tax. My eldest 3 children are in private but we are going state for number 4 as the increases are out of control for us.

678socks · 21/04/2026 12:17

@Muchtoomuchtodo i was really surprised that we were expected to just sign up on this basis….i wouldn’t buy something in a shop without knowing the cost. A quick survey of friends showed me that all schools seem to do it. Sign up by early March and then fees released in April…

Persephonegoddess · 21/04/2026 12:51

6% so 13k a term now year 11

678socks · 21/04/2026 17:03

So if there has been only a small increase this year do we brace ourselves for a massive increase next year?

GentlePearlBear · 21/04/2026 18:46

I would always budget on the basis that over the time of a DCs school life fees will go up on average of around 5% - sometimes lower and sometimes higher….but rarely over 8% in a year because that automatically gives people the option to leave without notice. (Obviously VAT was an anomaly). Increases are always way above inflation which in my mind schools and I don’t know how they justify this by the time my DC finishes fees will be in the region of £17K a term for a day place which will price out most if us. I already counting down to them finishing.

678socks · 21/04/2026 22:15

Ok thank you. I don’t know how they justify it either, I suppose a business….

curious79 · 21/04/2026 22:19

7%
we didn’t get the full 20% increase with VAT - they’re easing it in

Haribitch · 21/04/2026 22:28

Selective outer London school. Now also at almost £12k/term.

Thank goodness for scholarships and generous grandparents!

Sorry to be nosey and tell me if this is rude to ask… how much generally is private secondary school?

Entirely depends on the school. In our general area, it’s anything from around £24-25k to £38-39k (day fees). Boarding a lot more. Plus extras.

Exasperateddonut · 29/04/2026 01:36

5% at the school we were considering. 14k a term day fees (that includes a music lesson at 1k a term) have made us rethink whether we really want to sink that amount of cash. Plus all the extras of exam fees and trips and god knows what else.
