It's that time of year again... how is everyone's school fee increase looking?
I'm hoping for under 5% (secondary)

7%. The the 5% and the 20% vat that’s 32% on a year !

8% at dd's London prep. I did a compound increase calculation and if it increases at this rate, fees will be almost double by the time dd2 is in Yr 6.

ours has! This is where we’re at since our eldest started

Ineedanewsofa · 03/04/2026 20:30

1% which is the lowest since 2018! Also introduced a much more generous sibling discount (which doesn’t help us but still). I was expecting much more so am very relieved.

Sorry to be nosey and tell me if this is rude to ask… how much generally is private secondary school?

It varies depending on which part of the country you're in and the school itself, the three closest to me charge approx 8k a term, two of which charge for lunch on top. Fee information is usually on the schools website though so you can look up how much those in your area charge. I have two at independent schools so I try not to think about the total annual cost.

Every single one of them will charge different fees.

If you are the top of the CLC/Winchester/Eton/Radley then you might charge £12k a term Day or c£20k a term for boarders.

If you are a smaller more local private school it might be £8k a term for a day pupil. It really will depend on status of the school, results, cohort to Oxbridge/Ivies, location - Southeast likely to be far more expensive than Northwest.

TeenagersAngst · 04/04/2026 08:26

Ours has done some interesting jiggery pokery with the fees this year - no increase for prep school, a reduction for y7 and then 5% for all remaining years.

That's interesting - I guess they're trying to attract new pupils who then get locked in.

A bit like a mobile phone contract "50% off the first month"

£6k a term at the more expensive option for the secondary school, £5k a term for year R-6, the smaller school is £14k a year but has limited facilities

MissyB1 · 04/04/2026 08:35

They won’t tell us until about June I suspect, they always keep it quiet as long as possible 😡 but I suspect it will be around 6%. Thankfully he will be in his last year in September.

Wow, living the dream. Ours was 6k a term when we started five years ago, now it’s nearly 10k including VAT.

Foxhasbigsocks · 04/04/2026 09:05

8% here

HeavenInYourEyes · 04/04/2026 09:17

6%

Justcallmedaffodil · 04/04/2026 10:40

HopefulYankee · 06/04/2026 12:37

Anjo2011 · 09/04/2026 19:37

Now 6.5k per term (inc VAT and lunch) (we are north UK).

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 10/04/2026 12:44

5% across the board in every year group. But there was a massive wallop when vat came in obviously, on top of an above inflation increase so its fair to say that there was significant push back last year and pupil numbers are definitely falling so the usual 6-7% joy has perhaps been moderated this year.

It has also been issued for the first time inside the Easter holidays so that if needed a terms notice can be given to allow for transition in September. That was a particular bug bear for parents.

@NeedingASafeSpace just under £10k a term for years 9-13 [plus lunches if not brought from home, music lessons and any other discretionary activities.]

maxandru · 10/04/2026 12:55

4.9% pre-prep year
London - zone 2

Ours is about 8k per term but it depends a lot on area. All schools should have their fees published on their website -so you can google any school you want to know the fees of!

Roomgigi · 10/04/2026 14:38

Finally heard - 4%

~7% and ~4.5% for two different senior day schools in London. Prep school hasn’t sent out their new fees yet.

Ohcrap082024 · 15/04/2026 18:00

4.9% for DD going into Year 11. We are thinking long and hard about 6th Form options as we are looking at £70K approx for 2 years on A levels. This includes possible fee increases, daily transport, lunch, exam fees. Day pupil, SE England…it’s a good school but I’m not sure if it’s that good.

ShiningLikeAButterbean · 16/04/2026 17:37

The girls’ school that DD is joining in September has just announced a 3% rise.

However, (I love this so much) they are extending their 5% siblings discount to siblings who cannot attend the school either because they are boys or because they applied but weren’t offered a place. So thanks to my DS being at a completely unconnected indie we’re seeing a net 2% reduction on DD’s fees!

GreenMarigold · 17/04/2026 13:29

4.7%. I was expecting it to be a bit more so I’m feeling ok about it.
