Private School and Toxic posters…

….just curious why such toxic posts and posters? I’ve never seen so many vile posts - private school parents are elitist , all state school parents are envious, labour is evil, tories are evil etc. etc. All very sad 😞

OP posts:

@JustBecauseIcanComment you can’t have been here very long if you haven’t come across a “feral thug” type comment. They are easily as frequent as the “entitled boater wearers” comments. Then you need to add in the accusations of jealousy, envy, hypocrisy, communism, socialism (as an insult), not wanting the best for your children, supporting a race to the bottom……I could go on but it’s too wearisome. But as I said, best to report the most egregious and ignore the rest.

CarrieOnComplaining · 26/03/2025 12:07

why would we rather run someone down for working hard, making a life for themselves, having choices because of their success than celebrate their success ….not the good old brits we just perpetuate the class divide by accusing people of being above their station because they have the resources to give their DC choices - we live in a capital country - feudal Britain doesn’t exist!

But there you go, OP!
Plenty of people work hard, very very hard, and still find they have few choices and certainly can't afford private school.
And plenty of people are very wealthy without working at all (inheritance, trusts, receipts from estates etc), or because they ripped off the hard working, or made their profits of their work.

Feudal Britain very much exists.

And too many posts like yours imply that (or are open to inference that) the reason people can't afford private school is that they just didn't work hard enough.

Personal insults are never OK. But sense of perspective and context helps. You had choices, you used your choice, you are happy with your choice.....why should everyone else celebrate you? Just get on with it.

Why are you on a private school thread if your DC are neither at private school or considering it???? Why so angry? You live in a capitalist country - which you are happy about 🤔 or do you want to live in a communist country 🤔 You seem so bitter and angry …I can’t understand why.

No, I only joined as I was considering my DC going back to state for 6th form and get people’s views however after reading the posts I decided not to bother asking as I don’t want the abuse of why am I abusing the system etc. such a sad world we live in that you can’t ask a question from those who have the same experience instead it’s just people trolling 😖

Jealousy- who wouldn’t want to send their kids to private school - my nephew went - the facilities at his school blew me away - theatre school, dancing studio, sailing, archery etc - my sister nearly bankrupted herself keeping him there!

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 26/03/2025 17:02

@JustBecauseIcanComment there is an argument to go back to state for 6th form as some universities give lower grade offers to state school students. Hopefully your child will get awesome GCSE's, and then a good state and a tutor could be a good option, depending on what they want to do.....

We all want the best for our children! I'm all for helping them to maximise all the opportunities!

Do I? Really?

You asked a q on MN about why people are apparently toxic about parents who choose private school.

Do you not think that those whose kids don't go private might be well placed to give some answers?

I have no axe to grind over what schools people choose if their money gives them that choice. But I am explaining some potential reasons why some people may have criticisms or observations - and as I said being rude is never acceptable.

Well, reading this thread will have shown you that it very definitely goes both ways! There are some on here I forgot to put on my list.

Incidentally, check your facts very carefully before you send your DS to a state 6th form in the hope of getting lower university offers.

I think I may have read your post wrong, you make fair points and yes I can see that people do work very, very hard etc. but unless I am naive I don’t believe the private school thread is for people to gloat and if it is then that is very sad nor is it for people to troll and have pops at people either.

Im just shocked by the levels of toxicity. My point wasn’t that people who send their DC to private school should be patted on the back but why put them down or assume they have it so easy….they should know their privilege.

When I was at university I was surrounded by 85% privately educated people and never did they make me feel less because I was state educated. The question of what school did you go to was never asked again after freshers week and then it was only as an ice breaker - where are from, what school did you go to, what Alevels did you go etc. it was accepted that we had all earned our place at uni and that was that. So to read such toxic posts that are so judgemental from both sides of the fence isn’t pretty.

Actually, I agree with you-it would be great if we could talk about this sort of thing with courtesy. But don’t think for one moment it’s a one way street. As you can see from this thread alone!

Screamingabdabz · 26/03/2025 21:37

You asked why people post ‘toxic’ posts on private school threads and people have given reasons. But anybody questioning the morality of private education is met with equal amounts of ‘toxic’ responses including some of yours here op, calling people bitter, angry, vile and posting lots of passive aggressive emojis. I’ll ask your own question back at you… what are you so angry about? Why is it so important to you that the proliferation of privilege is never questioned or challenged?

You will not get a response to any more of your posts from this OP as you are clearly just looking for a virtual fight.

@Bodonka

I agree with your post and I can see why people would get emotive about how they see some children getting an educational advantage based on money rather than intellectual merit.

What I don't understand is why people aren't more upset about private health care where literally some people get a better chance of living or at least better health based on money.

Because money won’t save you from the things that will actually kill you. It’ll just get you seen quicker for your niggles.

I never really had any thoughts about private school parents, it wasn't something that occurred to me to spend my time thinking about. Such a tiny proportion of parents send their DC to private school that I don't think I've crossed paths with any. Since seeing the endless VAT threads I must admit I now do have a generally negative opinion due to the tone deaf nature of their posts and complete lack of awareness of their own privilege. I'm sure this is a minority of private school parents but they are so vocal it gives a general bad impression.

University admissions look at which school GCSEs were taken at. They aren't daft.

If this policy and others are so poor it actually results in cuts to state education maybe more should have listened instead.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 26/03/2025 22:33

@lavenderlou I'm sure they do. Some probably pay closer attention than others....and the top ones are going to want top grades either way. I probably wouldn't pull a child out of a school for this reason alone, but worth looking into.....though not sure where one would go about finding such info?

Hmmm - a quicker diagnosis and quicker treatment for cancer will certainly improve your odds of saving your life.

Private health care covers a bit more than "niggles".

Araminta1003 · 27/03/2025 13:18

It is clearly the current Labour Party’s fault - they are the ones that have chosen to stoke division in Education by imposing VAT on education, but only on private schools within education. That means all the haters somehow now think hating openly against private schools is OK.
It is exactly what happened with Brexit and all the nastiness towards Eastern Europeans as a group, when in reality, the research showed that, as a group. they had actually contributed significantly to our economy.

Stoking division amongst your own population is toxic and unproductive. People are then consumed by hatred and upmanship rather than helping their fellow citizen out.
All politicians need to be removed from Education as far as possible.
Even within the state sector, there is division caused by the constant rhetoric stoked by politicians, anti grammar, anti church school, anti non high achieving comp, anti darling catchment comp. The list goes on and on.
Parents should always be able to decide what suits their children and it is none of anyone else’s business, least of all politicians trying to benefit to further their own agenda and interfere with basic parenting choices.
