Nail Varnish on Primary school girls.

DD is in reception and in the last month has been asking to wear nail varnish. I have a few bottles but I can't remember the last time (years in fact) when I have worn it. She keeps saying that certain girls wear it to school. For me it is a not over my dead body issue esp. since I teach(secondary).

If this is indeed so, AIBU to expect the school to put their foot down about it. I am planning to make inquiries via the childminder this week and if so, I'm planning to discuss it with school.

Lots of girls at my infacnts school wear nail varnish on toes especially

if you dont want your child to, surely thats up to you to say so to your child, not demand a blanket ban

bigstripeytiger · 30/06/2010 20:01

It doesnt seem to be an issue at my DDs school. I had assumed that it would be, but when I realised that every school fundraiser would include the opportunity for the girls to get nails painted, I thought that they probably dont mind at all.

islandofsodor · 30/06/2010 20:01

It is banned at dd's school. So much so that she panicked when she realised it was swimming and she had forgotten about the varnish on her toenails.

thatbuzzingnoise · 30/06/2010 20:02

I thought schools had policies on nail varnish use. they did in my day. (old) If there is a policy on it then I expect the policy to be adhered to.

Mine hassle me to paint theirs (6 and 3)

Simply because they see me paint mine

I do it at weekends sometimes... pale colours only, though

Not sure why a blanket ban is required?

castille · 30/06/2010 20:03

On toenails, why not.

I don't like painted fingernails on little girls, and it's inappropriate at primary school, as is any make-up.

thatbuzzingnoise · 30/06/2010 20:03

well make up use. I class varnish as makeup

now that I mention it. there are also a couple/few who wear a bit of blush and lippy (which according to dd - can't come off so I am thinking it is not lip gloss.)

I think it should be banned only when it becomes a problem. E.g. children not wanting to play or do activities where 'my nail varnish might get chipped'.

PatriciaHolm · 30/06/2010 20:05

Our school doesn't allow it. I wouldn't let my DD (also reception) wear it into school anyway, certainly not on fingernails. I don't paint her nails at home either (I'm allergic to it) so it's not really an issue tbh except when we visit her 7 yr old cousin!

thatbuzzingnoise · 30/06/2010 20:06

I did her nails last week as she was off 2 days due to INSET - shimmery light colour. I could see she loved it.

I just think that it leads to pestering which I can well do without and then from varnish to gloss to eyeshadow... I don't want to go down that road.

sounds like I will make discreet inquiry of what the school policy is then. don't mind stirring a little if it turns out they have one restricting it.

its nevr been mentioned at my school. dont know why it would tbh

notnowbernard · 30/06/2010 20:08

Nah... by banning stuff you just make it seem more alluring, IMO

Though DD1 knows she CANNOT wear make-up (at all, atm) or 'jewellry' (the real sort or plastic/beady tat) to school as school is for learning it is Not A Fashion Show

Spidermama · 30/06/2010 20:10

Wow! Who cares?

My DS wears nail varnish to school now and again. I barely even notice.

I really don't see what the big issue is.

ronshar · 30/06/2010 20:10

Secondary school perhaps.
Primary no.
It is not necessary for small children to wear make up and nail varnish is part of that whole world.

Maybe I am a prude too.

Saying that, check your schools uniform policy, it should say there.

cyb · 30/06/2010 20:12

buzzing IMO if the pestering is being done to the teachers at school then the school can get involved. if its domestic pestering, its your job I'm afraid!

thatbuzzingnoise · 30/06/2010 20:18

cyb: and if the school's policy states that varnish is not to be worn but it is?

shouldn't I expect that people who signed up to the policy adhere to it?

I care spidermama because to me it is all a part of the sexualisation of children. It makes for a nice treat every now and then for little girls to play grown ups and for mums to be a part of the fun for them. This is not occasional use she is not speaking of and not in pale colours. I ask nosy questions whenever she brings up the conversations.

of course if policy bans it they shouldnt wear it
but if there is no policy its down to parents

mitochondria · 30/06/2010 20:26

My sons both have turquoise toenails at the moment.
Nobody has noticed.
I'm not sure if their school has a policy.

I teach in a secondary school with a fairly strict uniform policy and nail varnish is Not Allowed- the Head of Year keeps a big bottle of nail varnish remover and cotton wool in her desk.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 30/06/2010 20:31

I don't think it should be banned if it's not causing any problems, but I wouldn't send mine to school with nail varnish on (or not deliberately -- SILs used to paint DS's nails sometimes when he was younger and I'm sure he wound up wearing it to nursery several times).

If the uniform policy does say no nail varnish then it ought to be consistently enforced, though.

My girls wear it a lot during the summer on fingers and toes. School, nor nursery, have complained.

Hulababy · 30/06/2010 21:13

It is banned from DD's prep school. No make up of any ind, inc nail varnish.

I have no problem wth DD wearing a bit of nail varnish for parties though.

duckyfuzz · 30/06/2010 21:16

I don't think it is banned at DTs' school, but as far as they are concerned it is I let them wear it for parties or at the weekend, but they know it comes off on Sunday night
