Primary leavers - is your child leaving school in a limo...

On their last day?

I ask because a number of DS1's class are - he was offered (rather late in day) a place in someone's limo - it was £25 including pizza at Pizza Hut.

I thought it was a bit dear and when he said he wasn't bothered declined (the limo-hirer not a particular pal of DS).

Suspect many/most of the class may be going in limo (several) actually. Hope DS doesn't feel he is missing out!

Anyway, just wondered in quick straw poll if this is the norm? Obv doesn't help DS1 as he walks tragically home from school on last day but I was just interested.

FWIW I think it's a bit barmy.

Ours are having a leavers disco organised by the school

my sons whole class (and teachers!) left last year on the last day of term in a vintage double decker bus. It was arranged as a surprise by one of the parents and the children still talk about it even though they are nearing the end of yr 7. It cost about £15 including bowling and food and they had an amazing time.

@ wedgiesmum yy we are on hols 24th July to 7 aug so yr 2nd week looks good. Do you have my email? I have a mobile phone too now!

Bless you for liking DS1, I love him so much of course but he can be an acquired taste .

OMG How crass & unnecessary is THAT...........mind you, having recently heard of the whole School prom extravaganza that seems to be the norm these days...I'm begining to think emigrating might be a good idea.....lol

If it were me, tell him to be proud & hold his head very high on that last walk home from School,............ as he is following what he has no doubt been learning a lot about in School...& that is protecting the environment, & not polluting the atmosphere

Ghastly artificial Americanism even at 18. I had not even imagined that it could have spread to 11 year olds.

This is materialistic and unwholesome

Good lord - this particular demand has yet to reach these parts.

My petrolhead DS would bloody love it though. I mean really love it. I might suggest it. Perhaps something restrained. Like a Hummer. That'll make me really popular with the other parents, won't it?

I do think a helicopter might be taking things a little too far, bluejeans

How much do limos cost to hire btw (am kind of genuinely interested for DS's birthday)?

lol wedgiesmum - I always have a lump in my throat watching the class assemblies at school I work at! Infact I am often better at DD's assemblies than of my Y1 classes!

Not seen any limos at the gates for DD's school leavers or at the juniors attached to my school. Didn't even knew that happened for little ones. Have seen a limo party for primary age - bu not just for leaving school.

Mind you, DD went in a limo in vegas at half term and loved it. It was her second time too - ordered a big taxi for 7 when we went to the czech Republic on holiday (for airport tranfer) - when it showed up it was a big black stretch limo, lol. The girls thought they were film stars!!!

Has this idea come from america? It is bloody awful.

I would absolutely cringe if i my child was coming home from school with her mates in a limo.

Its barmy all right.

DD is in yr6 and there's a leaving do - sit down meal for child and parents. £20 a head but at least its a proper meal and it is affordable for the families (oop north but private). However, I casually asked another mum about dress code (DD not having said anything, I'd vaguely realised she'd need some sort of frock)... apparently some of the girls (those with Yummy Mummies) are going to be wearing strapless dresses and heels andd spray tan and arrive in a limo . DD snorted when I passed this on, she'll be happy with a nice age-appropriate dress thank goodness.

But help, I'll need some glad rags, unless something I've had for years still fits and doesn't look too dated.

We're north and not private. Just an autograph book, end of term concert and the yr 6 parents get together to arrange something - pizza/BBQ etc. Really relieved to be in a backwater. Yr11 son going for the limo though, but he's a petrolhead and looks fab in his suit. But so sad to see 11yr olds dressed like that - what on earth will they do at 16 if they've had the prom/limo/tango tan.

Our junior (the largest in Europe, apparently) is having a leaver's disco and assembly. Parents have to drop off and pick up their child in the theatre (really a large room next to the hall) and it'll be exactly the same as other disco's - they get a hot dog and squash.
I'll pick DD and DS up as normal (he's leaving infants to go up to junior) and I'll probably take them to the nice ice-cream shop to mark the event, but blimey - we're struggling to pay the food bill at the moment and DH earns enough for 2 salaries, so god knows how people afford this ludicrous indulgence. Sickening really, when you think of how billions of kids don't even get an education.
And they say kids aren't spoilt these days?

More dross imported from the USA.

Its not needed, its a waste of money, its not exactly enviromentally friendly.

Stop pampering to the little ones, let them learn that life is not all fun and parties.

my DS1 was left out of the crowd who went in limos on last day because the hiring Mum decided she didn't like him! He felt awful, as did many of the kids who went. Limos only fit so many and it usually not the whole class!

Half of DS1's class are leaving in a Hummer limo on last day of Y6 - an hour of driving around town then on to an early supper at TGIs. Total cost £25. Succumbed as his best friends are going... BUT that was before I realised his school had organised a London Eye and river cruise trip to mark the end of the year (which actually cost less than the limo/burger)!!

I agree it's completly Barmy!

My poor friends daughter had a tough last couple of years in Primary school after moving to a new area & new school.

When they had their Year 6 "prom", the parents arranged a couple of 12 seater Limos. That meant there were 24 seats for 28 children. My friends daughter was led to believe that she would be going in one of the Limos until the day before when someone who originally wasnt going decided that they were & she got dropped! Heartbreaking for a 11 year old!

She got the last laugh however - DH took her on the back of his Suzuki GSXR 1000! The other girls faces (and their parents) were a picture!

Also where has this 'prom' madness come from? Why not the leaving party like it always used to be.

I had to re-read this as I had assumed it was for year 11's - was gobsmacked to realise it was for year 6's! Get a life. Get a grip. As PixieOnaLeaf said - if you give in to this now, how are you going to pay for the helicopter they will need when they are 16? Zapostrophe, Galena, Feenie, GoEngland, Spudmasher - I'm with you all

Crikey, how things have changed! When I left primary school we spent all day signing each others shirts and then tied our ties to the school gates.... then walked home!
