Hello, sorry another boring question! Which colour book band would you expect a child to be on at the end of reception?
Cheers

I think "book bands" differ from school to school.

Is your child following Oxford Reading Tree? If so, what stage books are they reading?

daisy243 · 26/05/2010 18:41

My dd has read a variety of books. She now has ORT level stage 5, green band.

ORT level 5 is good. My DD is P1 in scotland, and her class are just finishing level 4 ORT.

My DD is on ORT level 9 now though due to being a) excellent at english and b) having moved from the english school system to the scottish one so has had an extra year at school.

What's P1?
Thanks for your reply.

I would expect them to be on whatever band keeps them interested and engaged, with just a little bit to learn from each book.

For my daughter, that will be ORT level 2, if she's lucky. For others, that will be a much higher level. For some, it will be just getting started.

FWIW DD1 finished Reception on Band 1+. She suddenly "got it" sometime in Year 1 and zoomed ahead through the next eight levels. She's one of only two completely independent readers in Year 3 and getting the highest scores in her year for comprehension.

I'm glad that I didn't worry about her apparently rather poor ability (compared with Mumsnet standards) in Reception.

P1 = Primary One

Kids are 5yrs old. Up here kids start school in the summer if their 5th birthday falls from Feb-Jan instead of the English system of Sept-Aug

DS is now in Year 1. When his class finished Reception there were children on all levels from pink (the first book band) to free reading. i.e. "any" level is "normal".

The most children were probably red/yellow band - ORT levels 2-3.

My DS is another that did relatively poorly in Reception and has "clicked" in year 1.

tootootired · 26/05/2010 20:02

Huge range of variation within normal. DS is on ORT5 and I believe he's one of the better readers in his reception class. (there is no point me being precious about it as he has plenty of catching up to do on writing, maths and behaviour!)

DS1 only got onto 1+ at Easter and managed to scoot up a couple of levels in his last term IIRC.

There was a list that someone posted which had the standard band colours compared to the ort levels. I think roughly speaking children are hope to progress 3 levels each year. SO if they are a non reader at start of reception, working towards or in level 3/band 3/redor blue band(?) is normal. Ds skipped a whole band recently when he was benched marked. but he could read a bit and knew a lot of phonics when he started and it has just clicked. All children progress at different speeds. There are children who started off at a higher level then him as he struggled with confidence and wish to read, who are now not as advanced as he is. I am sure this will flip back over.

UnifyingLeptonsAndQuarks · 26/05/2010 20:06

opps.

Meant to add, imo it is more important to get the sounds and rules properally learnt as this affects the ability to read unknown/harder texts and spell correctly when they get bigger. A good grounding in the basics goes a very long way.

Hulababy · 26/05/2010 22:34

I work in a Y1 class and we currently (so nearly a year on) have children reading from book band Red to White. Some joined the class last year on Lilac and Pink, in other words non readers.

It varies massively.

Runoutofideas · 27/05/2010 07:46

My dd1 does blue band books in her guided reading sessions at school but brings orange band books home. Her best friend is on pink books. I think everyone who has said there is a huge range of what is considered to be normal is correct. I would say your dd is doing very well.

Builde · 27/05/2010 08:42

Everyone else has said it, but by the end of reception my dd's class has some just 5 year olds reading purple, and other almost 6 year olds reading red.

gleegeekgleek · 27/05/2010 15:46

Runout if you think that's a difference between home and guided reading, my ds does red level books in guided reading but is sent home with green and is just moving onto orange which makes me about what he can be getting from the guided reading.

Hullygully · 27/05/2010 15:54

white

gleegeekgleek · 27/05/2010 16:04

Are you being sarcastic Hully?

Hullygully · 27/05/2010 16:06

The all catch up by year 3.

misdee · 29/05/2010 15:01

no they dont forehead.

speaking from a mum of a girl who struggles with reading and is still 'behind' her peers but doing well at age 10.

and dd2 is 7 yr 2, and almost freereader

dd3 in reception is reading ORT 4 i think.

eandh · 29/05/2010 15:07

DD1 is in reception and on 1+/2 but am just getting to the stage where its'clicking' and each week she is becoming more confident I'd imagine she'll end reception on ORT 2 (I know there are a couple of girls in her class on 5/6 and a few others still on no words books)

DaftApeth · 29/05/2010 15:35

There are a couple of free readers in dd's Reception class.

Dd is on blue band and there are others on a lower band (so she tells me!).

By the end of the year, I would have thought, that there will continue to be a range of readers at different levels. So impossible to say what band a child should be on at the end of the year.

paisleyleaf · 29/05/2010 15:39

DanJARMouse, do you mean the class are all finishing ORT level 4 at the same time as each other?
