Have the Y2 SATs started already then?

I'm not making a big deal of it. Just dd mentioned today that they did a 'very hard' maths test at school and I wondered if this was a SAT? I kind of thought they'd do them after Easter.

Won't matter - they will just assess your child on another day.

Feenie · 31/03/2010 14:26

Most schools do this over several weeks (in as relaxed a manner as possible).

I asked dd's teacher today and she said they would be in the last two weeks of May, spread out over 2 weeks. She said they would:

Read to the teacher 1-1.
Do a reading paper; read / answer questions
Do a spelling paper
Do an extended writing task
Do a science paper
Do a maths paper

Does that sound about right? What is the extended writing task?

There isn't a Science paper.

Extended writing is a longer piece of writing - they will be used to this.

Is it a free form piece of writing? Do they get to make a plan? Does the teacher give them a theme or will it be one of the themes they've been working on already?

It's nothing to get wound up about. It's just a piece of writing that they will have talked about and done preliminary work about, just like all the other pieces of writing over the year. These tests are not important - as many, many posts and threads have stressed - they are used to SUPPORT teacher assessment.

The teacher will know the writing levels by the time the children do the 'writing task'. It will just be like a normal literacy week. There is nothing worrying about it. Even teachers are fairly laid back!

We are specifically asked NOT to take SATs writing tasks to our county moderation meetings (to match levels between schools). We are asked to take several pieces of work from several children, so that our TEACHER ASSESSMENTS can be moderated and agreed.

Hi my daughter has just done a Level 3 maths paper today, she has come home and said she got 17 out of 30, does anyone know if that means she has got a Level 3 or not?

Feenie · 05/05/2010 16:54

But ut depends on what all the other evidence points to as to what her final teacher assessment is. That's a low level 3 for that particular piece of evidence - in my LEA we can only give a level 3 if they are secure (3b).

mrz · 05/05/2010 16:56

Amez do you know which paper they used
On the 2007 paper 12 points is need for a level 3

mummyofexcitedprincesses · 05/05/2010 17:35

Amez, it won't matter, as your child will only get a level 3 if they are working at level three in a range of contexts over time. One SATS paper is just a small part of the teacher's assessment.

Amez · 05/05/2010 20:29

Thankyou...at her last parents evening they said she was working at a 2a/3c, so i wasnt sure if this now confirmed she was a level 3c or not. Not sure what paper they did I presumed it was the 2010 paper as they are administering the sats over the next 2 weeks.

mrz · 05/05/2010 20:32

This years Y2 SATS tests are a choice of either 2007 or 2009 papers

mummyofexcitedprincesses · 05/05/2010 21:23

It is all very confusing, the level your child ends up with is a bit like the Oscars (awarded for a body of work rather than just one film). The teacher will use any assessment papers as well as examples of the child's work over a period of time, previous assessments and their knowledge of the child to set a level.

This also means if your daughter is usually working at level 3 but doesn't sit a level 3 paper she can still get that level.
