Following my 'where to live in MANCHESTER thread' please tell me about primary schools in SALE

The deal has been done and it looks like we are moving to Sale. Ofsted reports look good, schools look like they achieve above the national average.

Please share with me your opinions, experiences and views on the local state primary schools.

Any to be avoided?

Of course, there aren't any places at any of them for all my children, but that's another thread for another day...

Thank you

shamelessly bumping for attention

Hi

Good choice ;0)

Have Trafford given you any idea of which schools will have places available?

Ohforfoxsake · 23/02/2010 17:34

Hi Diamondhead.

Broomwood, 2 miles from where we'll be has two places.

I've started to ring round the local schools. We aren't zoned for Springfield, St Annes is possible (though we aren't church goers) and Moorlands Junior and Templemoor, but that would mean DS1 going to one, and the other 3 at the other.

I went to St Annes! But it was a very long time ago and the school has been rebuilt I believe - I don't live any where near there now so would have no idea what it is like now.

sugarplumfairy · 23/02/2010 22:51

My children are at Springfield and it is a great school so is a shame you are not close enough for it. I have friends whose children have gone to Templemoor and Moorlands and they have been happy with them.
I have lived in Sale for most of my life and most of the primary schools are great, it's the secondaries that leave alot to be desired unfortunately, if your children aren't clever enough to get in the grammar schools.

Ohforfoxsake · 24/02/2010 10:16

We are about two streets away from Springfield, but just outside the catchment

OP posts:
sugarplumfairy · 24/02/2010 20:26

Really, I'm two streets away as well, must be in the opposite direction!
I can let you know what I know/think about any of the schools that have room for your children. But they are all good, just some have different reputations, such as for being schools that will really push children through the 11+ and ones that won't.

Ohforfoxsake · 25/02/2010 17:23

Thanks Sugarplum, I appreciate that very much. its near the leisure centre - can't say much more on here,

what's Lime Tree like?

and Moorlands/Templemore?

I would like them to go a school which would encourage them through the 11+ if I'm honest.

Its likely we won't be near enough to Ashton to get in.

Hi Fox

I'm watching your threads with interest. We live in the South Warrington area but DH works in Trafford and we are considering moving to Sale for the co-ed Sale grammar (have decided that Altrincham grammar for girls will turn my daughter into a raging nympho!).

We would prefer Altrincham/Hale but the house prices are crap, as you'll be aware.

We've had a drive around Sale (the south side of Washway Road) but we weren't that impressed. It's quite rural and villagey where we currently live and Sale seemed so built up, though I'm wondering whether the north side of the A56 might be better (towards Ashton).

Rightmove suggests that some of the properties over that side back onto countryside but when I looked on google maps, there seemed to be a small sewerage works and I thought "gah!".

I'm also wondering about primary schools. I have two children, one is in reception and the other is 8 months old. The elder child is on the G and T register so probably stands a reasonable chance at the grammar. She's in a small church school in our village. We walk to school without crossing a single road so I'm naturally wary of moving to another primary if it's not much good.

Any feedback would be welcome. The league tables tell you nothing, really. Oldfield Brow school, for example, looks ot have excellent results but it's not a great catchment area. My daughter's school gets the same results as a school on the other side of town with a terrible catchment area and yet the kids are completely different so they must be cooking these books somehow!!

Ohforfoxsake · 26/02/2010 21:42

I think I'm comfortable with Sale because its only a stop from Altrincham and to be honest I wasn't that impressed with Hale. The houses are lovely, but not the size we need. And I wasn't too enamoured with the village. Too many Estate Agents.

Ashton on Mersey is meant to have a great high school, comparable with the grammers. We are just borderline to it where we are.

I'm visiting schools on Monday but I think we might be further West than you are looking, but I'll happily report back. If you can trawl through my threads and find my email (I'm reluctant to put it on MN too much) then I'd be more comfortable doing it off MN, simply because I'm cagey.

Seriously I'm just cautious about MN because I forget that it is the internet. Daft, I know!

KoalaSar · 27/02/2010 19:12

Right, I'll try that. You're probably right to be cautious.

lilolilmanchester · 27/02/2010 19:36

depends in which direction you're 2 miles away from Broomwood, but are you in zone for Brooklands Primary?

Ashton is a great high school but isn't the only good high school in Trafford, you'll find lot of snobbery around schools, often those badmouthing the other high schools haven't even been to see them.

Koala, re G&T, as I understand it, G&T register is related to top x% in your particular school. Most primaries in Trafford are really high performing, and full of clever kids, so don't be alarmed if your DC doesn't make it on to G&T here.

KoalaSar · 27/02/2010 21:02

I wouldn't be alarmed at all if she didn't make it onto the list - doesn't seem to make any difference at the moment but hopefully she will be stretched more later on.

Her current primary is also very high achieving - they put her on the list because her reading and maths age on reception entry was 4 years ahead of where it ought to be.

She's doing Y3/4 work in YR so I'm assuming she'd prob get into grammar. If not, perhaps we'd go private, though TBH I'd prefer her to mix with kids from average homes.

lilolilmanchester · 28/02/2010 00:14

how nice that you would like your DD to mix with people like us!!!

sugarplumfairy · 28/02/2010 22:58

Sorry for not coming back to you earlier. I know the head at Limetree and he is great but there are some social problems at the school which is in a poor area.

Moorlands and Templemoor are fine, as someone else has said most of the primaries are great. Not sure how hard they push the children in the 11+. However your closest secondary will be Sale high which was in special measures not that long ago.

I'm relunctant to go into more details, as I don't want to reveal too much on the internet as you say, am happy to e-mail you if you need more help.

Ohforfoxsake · 01/03/2010 21:47

that would be brilliant Sugarplum

Oh dear, I'm a newbie and don't no know the feck I'm doing. So sorry if I have hogged somebody else's thread or have put this in the wrong place.....here it goes - we're currently in Wigan (my hometown) but looking to move to Manchester (somewhere easily commutable to the airport with good transport links to the city centre). At the moment, Hale is favourite but have heard it's full of wanna-be-wags and snobs. Any opinions? Thanks!!!

hectorthestandbyhawk · 12/07/2012 23:41

Come to Monton - so easy to town by car (none of the South Manchester logjam), train or tram from Eccles. It's lovely and green. Airport about 20/25 mins away.

Bazyboots · 13/07/2012 01:06

Ooo, never heard of Monton. Where's that? Are schools good? (got a 3 yr old and a bun in the oven)

hectorthestandbyhawk · 13/07/2012 10:42

We're in outer Salford near Worsley and Swinton.Yes - Monton Green is a very good primary but you'll need to live in roads nearby to get a place. There are reasonably priced nice turn of century houses for sale on road school is in. In nearby Worsley/Swinton you've got Broadoak and St Marks which are also excellent. See here for houses.
We have canal/old railway line walks, lovely baby groups, high street with deli and coffee places. More info here here
The great thing about commute to Manchester is you get straight on M602 and whizz in.

hectorthestandbyhawk · 13/07/2012 10:49

This house is next door to Monton Green Primary. This one is also close enough to get into the school as is this one here.

hectorthestandbyhawk · 13/07/2012 10:52

Sorry that middle link doesn't work it's here.

Bazyboots · 13/07/2012 14:26

Excellent! Sounds lovely....This site is teaching me loads!! What are the secondary schools like in and around Monton?

Bazyboots · 13/07/2012 14:27

Oh, forgt to say - thank you very much!
