I don't get why people get so het up that they take their kids out tbh

it's just a little test and in most sensible schools, they will regard it as a bit of fun at this age

I have been told by teachers that the level 3 they can get awarded in yr2 is not the same as the level 3 they could get at the end of yr3 iyswim

That used to be the case when schools relied mainly on Y2 SAT tests and the optional Y3 test to determine levels, foxinsocks.

The Y2 test level 3 differed from the KS2 level 3 in that the latter was timed and children could not use equipment (multilink, etc).

Now Y2 assessment is based on teacher assessment, and so uses the whole school assessment criteria determine a level. Y3 teachers are also required to give a teacher assessment as part of normal school assessment procedures. So Y2 teachers use exactly the same criteria as Y3 teachers to arrive at these levels.

thanks feemie. Has been a while since my eldest did them and I must admit to not paying any attention at all to what has happened since then for the younger one

Am sure you had more interesting things to think about!

Well I can categorically say that some of the things dd1 is doing now in literacy that earns her a mid level 3 at KS1 would actually earn her a level 4 at KS3!!!

It's all mental and should be scrapped like the KS3 tests were. It's only a matter of time though. I just hope it happens before either of my dds gets to the next set of them.

As Feenie says, no school should have to give children more than one paper. Even if they give a child a L3 paper, and s/he doesn't get enough marks for a level 3, this should just be used to back up the teacher assessment (at L2 or giving reasons for low score). Children should not need to do a L2 paper as well.

Likewise, a teacher assessing a child at L2 will give him/her a L2 paper. If that child then does unexpectedly well, this should not change the L2 assessment. The child should NOT then be given the L3 paper. The teacher will need to look at his/her assessments again, hear the child read, etc to validate a final L2 or 3 assessment. THE CHILD DOES NOT NEED TO DO ANOTHER TEST!!!
