... a figure hugging outfit for a 1940s themed day?

we are having one soon and i have got an outfit consisting of... a button up puff sleeve blouse, a wide black belt and a knee length balck pencil skirt. i also have chnky high heeled, round toed balck shoes with a strap and buckle across the top.

i brought my assorted items back from the charity shop and tried them on for dh..his eyes nearly popped out of his head!

now i'm panicking that the outfit is inapprpriate, somehow. (dh said' forces sweetheart' sprung to mind)

now, the skirt isnt above the knee, and the blouse buttons up high, but i'm quite busty and it just feels a bit too sexy somehow. its a fab outfit, but i think it'll turn a few too many heads (just being honest- i dont usually turn any heads at all, lol!)

what shall i do? my FIL has lent me his overalls (sp?)so i could go as a landgirl, and look like a sack of spuds... what should i do?

sounds fab - go for it.

Funny how fashions come around - it sounds very now. Are you going to do sausage roll hair and red lipstick as well?

janeite · 28/03/2009 18:31

It sounds fine Noonar (secondary teacher here) - there's no flesh on display! It may just be that many of us are not used to emphasising our waists lately, so it feels more fitted for that reason.

I love fancy dress - wish we had another chance for dressing up coming up at school soon.

funnily enough, i thought red lips might add to the problem, so am going for deep plum, which is more my colour.

i have long dark hair, and am going to clip up the front section up in a sort of wavy quiff, and loose at the back. does that make sense?

not sure what sausage roll hair is, lol! can someone do a link to a pic??

oh, bloss, it is tight around the bum . i am an e cup, so everything hugs, lol.

hey did anyone see 'hello girls ' on tv years ago. its that kind of look, i think.

Sounds gorgeous! TBH though, if you are thinking its a bit too sexy, it probably is. I'd prob play it safe and go as the landgirl....but that just me. They were a fundamental part of the war effort and would good to represent them. Bet you look fab whatever you choose to wear.

thanks for the link! i couldnt manage such an elaborate style, tbh.

janeite, good to hear from another teacher.

you know what, i think 'glamourous' might be a more apt word than 'sexy'. it feels too glam.

noonar - not quite the thread I thought it was going to be when I clicked on it but as I am here.

I like the 1940s/1950s look for women. Sounds really nice. Maybe go with the bright red lipstick though as more 1940s classic? Plum might be too modern a colour?

I guess hair pinned up in a simple way with slides would be 1940s.

I can see why your DH likes it. Definitely a glamorous look.

noonar · 28/03/2009 19:02

thanks, abetadad, but i thought red might be a bit too, er, provocative.

noonar - A few years ago I went to a fancy dress party as a punk rocker. Impossibly tight red tartan drainpipes, ripped T shirt, chains, dog collar, safety pins, spikey hair, DM boot - the whole lot. I had never in a million years dressed like that but I went the whole hog. I loved it and so did everyone else and won a prize.

Yes go for it. The full on glamour look - as your top is not low cut and your skirt is knee length I think it is quite demur.

noonar · 28/03/2009 19:15

thanks a million.

just been chatting to MIL who thinks i've described a more fifties style outfit. she thinks that only a 'pin up' wouldve worna pencil skirt!

Maybe stick a cardi on over the top and wear some lower heels, less than 3 inches.
Sounds a fab outfit though, it's a look I go for quite a lot so hopefully you'll get some use out of it.

noonar · 28/03/2009 19:21

cardi a good idea.

shoes are only just 3 inches, and not sexy in themselves. more wicked witch than pin up!

My wife suggest a snood for your hair. That is 1940s.

Hulababy · 28/03/2009 21:11

We did a 1940s day for DD's school late last year - me and DD had to dress up. Definitely need bright red lipstick.

I think, speaking as a fellow teacher, the best thing to do is to ask around of your colleaues, see what they are wearing, and then make your decision based on that. You don't want to stand out like a sore thumb, but then you don't want to be underdressed either! In saying that, the outfit sounds awesome!
