By a library I mean a room that is dedicated to books that they can read whenever they like, or during 'reading' sessions, or on rainy days and that they can borrow from?

If yours doesn't what does it have instead?

yes it does

BeehiveBaby · 25/03/2009 20:00

Interesting! We had one at school but none of the 4 I have looked at do

fruitshootsandheaves · 25/03/2009 20:01

Our primary only has about 55 pupils but yes it has a library.

Yurtgirl · 25/03/2009 20:02

Ours does but I dont know if it actually gets used as a library - it hasnt got many books at all and seems to be used mostly as a music lesson room

ramonaquimby · 25/03/2009 20:02

yes have library but infants can't borrow books

CompareTheMeerkat · 25/03/2009 20:02

Yes it does

Nontoxic · 25/03/2009 20:06

Ours did but they took away the space for a classroom and divided the books between the classes.

hippipotamiHasLost14Pounds · 25/03/2009 20:06

Dd's infant school have a library, complete with soft squishy sofas for quiet reading.

Ds's junior school has quite a large library complete with a few comfy chairs and several groups of tables and chairs for quiet work.
Oh, and a complicated pupil-run system for borrowing books

cushioncover · 25/03/2009 20:07

Same as Hippi.

hewlettsdaughter · 25/03/2009 20:08

No - but there are books in the classrooms. DD (in reception) chooses a book to bring home each week, as well as having a book from a reading scheme given to her.

chinstrap · 25/03/2009 20:09

Ours does, but I think it's mainly for the KS2 children, and as mine are still in KS1, I can't comment on how the library is used. The KS1 and Reception children have a library where the reading scheme books are stored from which the teachers and TAs select books appropriate for the children in their classes. They can't borrow books outwith the reading scheme ones selected by the teachers for them. Each class has a book corner where children can sit and read in a quiet moment or during wet play. Nursery children get to choose a book they can take home on a weekly basis - mine loved this. Our town library (and cafe!) is right opposite our school so we often pop in there after school every 2 or 3 weeks.

Dottoressa · 25/03/2009 20:10

Yes - a superb library with books to suit ages 3-11, plus audiobooks. Each classroom also has its own library. They have a weekly class session in the library, and can borrow from it after school every day. It's fab!

singersgirl · 25/03/2009 20:10

Our primary (420 pupils) has 2, an infant library for KS1 and a junior library for KS2. Both are quite small rooms but reasonably well stocked; the infant library is more comfy and cushiony and the junior library has a table and some chairs in. The children all get a timetabled library slot once a week to choose a book.

I don't know whether children can go and read at lunchtime, though. Space is at a premium and the library's often used for one-on-one reading, SEN pull-outs and music lessons.

Quattrocento · 25/03/2009 20:10

Yes (but it is not a state school, the local state school doesn't have one, which influenced my choice of school quite heavily)

BarStoolCobra · 25/03/2009 20:11

ah ours wasn't built with one ( v recently) but is putting one on.

Hulababy · 25/03/2009 20:11

The infant school I work at: the library is a dedicated area upstairs, open plan to the corridor. It has a range of fiction and non ifction books in shelves and book browsers. Children have a set library session once a week to choose a book to take home. The teache ror TA records books going home and back. Main issue is how tatty some of the books now are and how many don;t come back from home. In the classroom they have a large book browser with books to chose from and look at during the day.

At DD's school again both the infant library and the juniors library are pen lan dedicated areas, off the corridors. Books are on labeled shelves. I only know how the infant part works - child can choose a book from the library to take home. They sign it out in a book, and sign in back in when it comes back. Again good range of fiction and non fiction and regularly added to either with donations from past pupils/parents or new books. Books can be used during school time too in free reading sessions, or if class work is complete. Classrooms also have book browsers with fiction/non fiction books o choose from.

Dottoressa · 25/03/2009 20:11

Ah, I should perhaps have added a disclaimer similar to Quattro's!

Niecie · 25/03/2009 20:12

The infants has a very wide passage way between the year groups with books down either side and soft benchs in the middle for reading on. Each of the year groups has a quiet corner with more books.

The juniors has a library with desks and chairs and in each of the shared work areas (with one class from each year sharing that space) there are more books and a couple of comfy chairs although those books are mostly reading scheme ones or those particularly related to a topic they are working on.

They had a big clear out of the Juniors library and the DSs bought a few of the old books and I found that some of them dated back to when I was at the school in the early 70's! Through the PTA, various token schemes and a bit of the budget they have lots of shiny new ones now so it is pretty good at the moment.

twinsetandpearls · 25/03/2009 20:14

yes and it is a state school.

frogwatcher · 25/03/2009 20:15

Presume so as dd 1 and 2 both come back with library books each week as well as their daily changed reading books - although to be honest I dont know where it is. I think it may be part of a room with the IT suite.

scienceteacher · 25/03/2009 20:17

Yes, and it is lovely. It has lovely plush carpets, comfy couches, soft toys - and loads of books. It is managed by a professional librarian.

TheFallenMadonna · 25/03/2009 20:18

Yes. It has some books which can be borrowed and some which are reference only. DS loves it.

Toffeepopple · 25/03/2009 20:19

A state infant school and they have:

  • small library where they have rostered visists per class
  • large book corner per room which stays in class they can read from this whenever they have finished a unit of work
  • "kaleidoscope collection" per class that they can choose a book from each week to bring home for us to read to them
  • indoor and outdoor book collections for lunchtimes
  • PTA book collection for PTA events

They aren't visiting the local library at the moment as it has just re-opened but are about to start to again once every three weeks (three form entry so each year group will have a weekly time and they will rotate).

seeker · 25/03/2009 21:10

Ours does - an infant and a junior one. The children aren't allowed to go there and read at lunchtime unless it's pouring with rain -they have to go outside (and a good thing too!)

Jux · 25/03/2009 21:17

Ours has a library. We just looked round a different school this morning and they did too. In the new school they will train children to be librarians if they're interested, too.
