By a library I mean a room that is dedicated to books that they can read whenever they like, or during 'reading' sessions, or on rainy days and that they can borrow from?

If yours doesn't what does it have instead?

Yes DD2s state primary does, and it's very good. The children can access it at breaktimes, and they have scheduled library sessions each week. It is large, bright and comfortable and seems to have a really good variety of books.

DD1s private prep also has a good main library, as well as mini-libraries in each classroom.

Mind you our house is like a mini-library too, we love books

Yes, a really wonderful one with a dedicated librarian. I've even been known to borrow books from it...

Yes. Never actually seen a pupil in it though , generally used for meetings.

Guadalupe · 25/03/2009 21:38

Yes. Quite small but a nice area.

choccyp1g · 25/03/2009 21:41

Yes, all the reading scheme books are kept there as well as the plus the general "free reader" books. The tables are used for one-to-one work and small groups. The day I do volunteer reading are usually 2 other activities going on in the library at the same time. (Primary school)

Yes.

giantkatestacks · 26/03/2009 08:28

yes but I dont think its much cop (even though its brand new) - we just go to the local one twice a week.

mankyscotslass · 26/03/2009 08:33

Ours has an infant library and a junior one.

The Junior one is larger than the infants, they are both ok.

WowOoo · 26/03/2009 08:36

Two local state primaries have good ones.

Local library even better though. I can try before I buy and order anything we fancy!

MollieO · 26/03/2009 08:50

Yes, separate library where they go for library lessons and bookshelves in the classroom. They can borrow books from both. We also go to the local library which is small and very child friendly.

MollieO · 26/03/2009 08:51

Private school but our local catchment school is attached to the library so they go straight from their school, through an internal door into the library and have lessons there too.

throckenholt · 26/03/2009 08:52

ours has a library area - but it is not a separate room - it is part of a large foyer where the secretary has her desk. I don't think it is an area where they sit and read and I presume they can borrow the books - mine haven't got to that stage yet .

ByTheSea · 26/03/2009 09:06

Yes, our primary school has a dedicated library. Classes go there throughout the day and children can go in early and borrow books.

notagrannyyet · 26/03/2009 09:15

The primary mine used to attend has a library, but only for non fiction and reference books. Every so often books are changed by county library service. All fiction is in the classrooms. Children can borrow any and bring them home. All junior children have a set time in the week when they can change non fiction, but fiction can be changed daily.
The infants have their own books in their own areas. Don't think they use the junior library, but I could be wrong.

Our state primary always had one, but not computerised or very accessible. So lots of books went AWOL. Now we've set up (with parent volunteers and PTA money) a computerised library with every book barcoded, every child has a barcode and books are catalogued under topic headings in computer (for easy searching) and coloured Dewey system labels. Yr 4-6 pop in to change books at breaktimes, and all years have scheduled library slot. Teachers tend to leave it to teaching assistants and volunteers though to manage borrowing.
It is a lovely addition to school but requires a LOT of work to keep it proactive (ie: parttime librarian) and constant replenishing of titles.

dd's school (small state primary) had a little library, staffed by volunteers - but it had to give way this year to an out-size Reception class

Hoping it will be resurrected when new buildings are built!
