school hair styles for an extremely scruff-prone dd

whatever style dd goes to school in, she comes out in a right state

have had to do loads of nit combing lately and it's really damaged her hair so need to treat it as gently as possible too

it's shoulder-blade length, straight and fine with a growing-out fringe (down to her chin nearly)

thanks!

Would you consider bobbing it, dinny? dd2 is always getting nits and in October she had it cut short and layered. It looks lovely and is far easier to keep neat and tidy (and to treat for nits).

My auntie does my cousins hair in two french plaits, looks really neat and tidy, she does it of a night when her hair is wet.

Hi Dinny,

Will it all tie up in bunches? (DD1 is also little scragg to btw), and then maybe a hair band.

I spray both my DDs hair with a diluted tea tree oil spray (about 10 drops per 100mls) i also put some pure oil on their hair bands every few days, and touch wood weve not had the gritters for a while.

dizzydixies · 03/01/2009 14:49

the only way I can get DD to come out without her hair all over the place is by clipping back her growing out fringe with two clasps and then parting the rest into low bunches just below her ears

shouldn't be too hard to do and won't cause her hair much damage if it falling into a centre parting naturally

dinny · 03/01/2009 14:49

short bob? does she wear it down for school?

not sure if dd's hair isn't a bit fine for a bob, maybe it'd be better though, make it more robust

flipping nit combs - hairdresser says it's pulled out loads of her hair (she initially asked me if dd had been ill, upset me loads for some irrational reason)

I often do bunches with clips but the clips always end up dangling at the very end of her hair for some reason

whatever style I do, her growing-out frige ALWAYS come loose

how do two French plaits work? I'm quite ok at plaiting (horsey youth!) - is it one down each side of head and meet in middle at bottom?

ALSO, how else can I improve the condition other than conditioner?

I would get it trimmed regularly to get it in good shape and wouldn't wash it too much, once or twice a week maybe

french plaits can be done as one big one right down the middle or two with one down either side

dinny · 03/01/2009 14:56

mm, French plait down each side would solve the escaping hairclip problem...........

does her hair need conditioner in it? leaving that out would maybe stop her hair being so flyaway?

dinny · 03/01/2009 15:05

hmmm, think so, just because it seems quite week atm

I only use conditioner to get the tangles out - all of mine have wavy/tangly hair

could you try without the conditioner and see if that makes any difference?

dinny · 03/01/2009 15:07

WEAK, argh!

just rub the conditioner on the tangles, you mean?

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 03/01/2009 15:08

or get a tangle spray to help comb it through after its been shampooed?

snice · 03/01/2009 15:09

Chin length bob + stetchy headband/aliceband

dinny · 03/01/2009 15:16

snice - fringe or no fringe?

Another vote for the stretchy headband. I do two plaits but not frech ones- too darn fiddly. I put a band at the top, plait it and another at the bottom iyswim. 4 bands in total and a wide stretch headband all the way over the top of the head for the fringe issue.

dinny · 03/01/2009 15:24

dd would come out without the band in place for sure though

dinny my auntie does two little french plaits on either side of the parting and they stay separate all the way down and end as little pigtails. Type thing. Looks gorgeous and cute as well!

dinny · 03/01/2009 17:45

smurfgirl - have had a trial run and they look great, thank you! so your aunt does them from wet and leaves overnight too?

Hi, I have similar problem and I do two rench plaits as well. HAve done them wet the night before and they look absolutely fine in the morning. I also use really small, think hairbands on the ends as dd1 finds these harder to pull out!

smurfgirl · 03/01/2009 19:06

Yes she does, well as far as I know because I am not there on school mornings but when I have seen them on the night before school her dd has had a bath and then sat and had her hair done.

She used tea tree oil as well and she has not had nits yet either and shes been full time in nursery since she was a baby (we had a long discussion about nits the other day actually).

HSMM · 03/01/2009 19:24

2 high plaits strapped over the top of her head. Looks cute and stops the horrible head lice finding hair on the table.

dinny · 03/01/2009 19:42

HSMM - strapped with what? kirby grips?

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 03/01/2009 19:48

dinny when you say the clips come out dangling at the ends do you use kirby grips or those hair clips that you snap down?

dinny · 03/01/2009 19:58

lol, whichever I use they come dangling out - kirby, snap down ones or the mini sort of butterfly clip ones!
