Does anyone have any thoughts/views etc on either/both of them? Would REALLY appreciate any thoughts.

Yes he is shared with the Grammar and he was almost like - you should be greatful that I have chosen to come to the little school open day at all!!

ReigateMum · 01/10/2008 14:50

Bellie - Can't work out which 'other' private school your child could be at... - giveusaclue.....

MatBackFeck · 01/10/2008 14:53

Funny I have only dealt with the Registrar at RSM and she was very nice. I got more of that type of thing from Micklefield - the wole your child will be priveledged to come to my school sort of thing. That's interesting, I guess maybe it depends on who you meet on the day (similarly didnt meet the head - only the early years head who seemed very down to earth) - which is why the long term experience of people whose children actually attend these schools is very interesting to me.

MatBackFeck · 01/10/2008 14:54

and would not be allowed in with such shocking spelling! I am at work and doing too many things at once ....

ReigateMum · 01/10/2008 15:07

Oh dear -the Head at Micklefield is rather 'gushing' at times, but she is lovely really!

sykes · 01/10/2008 15:24

It is all subjective, of course. I have views on the heads at Dunottar and Micklefield but they are very often at odds with other people's opinions. Not surprising, really, but even good friends tend to have very different opinions to me which I found odd. Not sure why, though.

Bunions by the way my email is matback3 at googlemail.com and would love to chat more about this

Garfieldandfriends · 10/10/2008 10:57

Hi all I also went to the RsM open morning and I think I must have been paying more attention... The Bursar at RsM is a lady who seemed really nice I had a long chat with her on the phone and on the day and she was really helpful I also went back to her after the day to ask more questions and had good responses. The Bursar for the grammar school was in the hall too for coffee after the tour to show support so I guess you picked the wrong Bursar....
I also took time after the talk to speak with the Head who I though came accross as a very nice guy - he has a young family and was really easy to talk to not arrogant at all infact one of the key things I picked up from my tour was that it is noticably up beat and not a stuffy establishment. I spent a long time in the reception class on my tour and talked to the teacher - they split the year into 3 to keep the classes very small and then it moves to 2 form entry for the rest of the school with no more than 20 in a class. I asked about streaming and they stream for maths from year 3 which I thought was quite good. The space that the school has was huge 15 acres I think they said the sports facilities were miles better than Mickelfield. I also checked the girl boy thing too and you are right it is top heavy with boys but the lower years are moving towards 50:50.

As you can tell I was quite taken with RsM and I have registered for next year I went to Mickelfied and Hawthornes but for reasons that are already on this post neither really suited me.

I hope my views have added something to your information too...

MGry · 13/10/2008 14:08

Just wanted to say, don't rule out Wray Common. We are on the edge of the catchment for other, more popular, schools and hence our child is now in Year 2 at WC. In over 2 years he has always skipped into school happily, is making good progress, as with his friends. It went through a bad patch a while back but with the new head the school changed and continues to improve. Good facilities, good teaching and more support if you want it, strong parental support. Its catchment falls across Reigate and Redhill giving a different social mix to RP & H. That might be unpalatable for some, but as a parent of WC I can recommend the school.

MatBackFeck · 13/10/2008 15:24

Thanks all, funnily enough I did go to the WC open day last week and was very pleasantly surprised - I also really liked it. Didn't see any evidence of the problems of the past and the head seems very confident that they will get a good+ ofsted next year. Unfortunately they are 2 form entry and already half full with sibs for next year apparently so I don't think we stand much chance there either as not that near. We are going to put it on our (utterly pointless, seemingly) form for state though.

Also went to visit Hawthorns and liked it, DH not quite so keen. Now wavering between RsM and Hawthorns for private and have pretty much accepted we will be going down that route.

Also went to see a small school caled Oakhyrst Grange that DH really liked, near Hawthorns, if anyone has any thoughts there. They have space for pre-school equivalent (lower Kindergarten) in January so am strongly considering that (as couldn't get ds into pre-school in Reigate and he is getting bored at day nursery as per my other posts).

Just to give you an idea of what I am up against for state, here is the patronising response the LEA sent to a local official who asked a question about the distance measurement on my behalf:

"We have to be careful with advice - parents/carers should make their own decisions, but we can indicate consequences.
If she selects oversubscribed schools, then she should take account of distance being measured by a straight line, not using travel distance along roads. A lot depends on how oversubscribed the school is as to her chances - I would advise she asks the schools how far away they took children and if any lived near her to estimate her chances. (I presume she is going to visit the schools.) [ER YES, I HAVE VISITED A TOTAL OF 10, SOME TWICE, WOULD I REALLY BE ASKING THESE QUESTIONS IF I WASN'T THE TYPE OF PARENT TO DO THEIR RESEARCH??) We don't know where potential reception children live, so we always say that we can only indicate what happened in the past and not guarantee anything. Schools, however, have a better feel as they can normally identify siblings and know where they live.

If it seems unlikely she would get a place at her 3 preference schools, then she does run the risk of being diverted to the next school with places - currently Salfords is the 'overflow' school. She should think carefully whether Sandcross Primary ought to be one of her preferences."

I still can't believe it is easier to get your children into private schools than even adequate state ones here - shocking. There are only 5 in our area (i.e the town we live in, is it so unreasonable to want to go to school there?) and we would be quiet happy with at least 3 of them which I don't think is too picky and yet, they are telling us we need to "choose" a failing one which is about to be merged with another school to rescue it or get sent to one I have never heard of miles away that is not even in the town in which we live. Rant over.

Have calmed down a bit now we have options for next year. Thanks everyone.

Interested to hear more opinions. I have been to so many schools now and considered so many options that I am starting to find it hard to distinguish between them. I suppose you have to say we are lucky to live in an area with so many good school options.

MatBackFeck · 13/10/2008 15:27

By the way Sykes, how are your girls getting on? Have things become any clearer?

MGry · 14/10/2008 14:38

I didn't mention this in my earlier post as it's not a personal recommendation, but I have agood friend, with girl and boy at RsM -both year 2 and below. I know she/they are very happy there. Also I don't know it myself but I have heard good things about Sandcross - strong headteacher. That's a bit vague I know but just thought I'd mention it! I think choosing schools is very personal, you get a positive/negative feel for them as you visit them. Ultimately, when it comes to primary schools, if your children have support at home then they will suceed wherever they are .

Garfieldandfriends · 15/10/2008 10:14

Yes well said MGry - my only added comment is that if you are going independent I would be careful not to select a school with very small numbers in present times we have seen a couple of local independents close in recent years due to small numbers. Mickelfied, Hawthornes and RsM all have sold numbers and RsM has benefit of being part of RGS my other half asked the Head on open day who are the Govs for RsM and he said that it has the same Govs and Management team as RGS which ticked the box for my man.

Also after reading this blog re results for last year from RsM to RGS I contacted RsM and they sent me the list of places about 85% got offers from RGS although they said not all chose to take them.

Hope the info helps

Have just read this post and am surprised by how many of the posters have disregarded other schools in the area without actually visiting them. I live on the borders of Reigate and Redhill and when the time came to apply for a school place we visited every school in the area. My husband and I both went to local village schools before going to private at 11 and had this very much in mind for our children. Bucking the Reigate 'norm' we weren't keen on Holmesdale or the Priory - you can't argue that they don't have great teachers, results etc but we felt the schools were just too big and didn't have a good mix of children from different backgrounds. We want our children to be able to mix with others and feel this is an invaluable life tool.

The closest we could come to a 'village' feel school in the area was St John's. We loved the school and knew immediately that we wanted our children to go there.

Interestingly, our second choice was Dovers Green. The school is the hidden secret of south reigate, it's fabulous. My only concern was which school my children would go to at seven, as again we were not keen on the Priory - due to much the same reasons for Holmesdale. So, we put St Johns, Dovers Green and then Holmesdale and we got Holmesdale initially; but then St Johns on the waiting list. We are very happy and have been impressed with the quality of teaching and how well the children are doing.

Just wanted to add another angle as everyone seems so fixated on Holmesdale and Reigate Parish. By the way, I do agree with other comments regarding Orchards - the most depressing visit out of all the schools we went to.

Bumperlicious · 18/11/2008 20:34

Hee hee, I went to the Orchards 20 odd years ago, but back then it was called South Park. They changed it due to the cartoon series apparently!

FWIW I went to South Park (Orchards), Sandcross then Reigate School, the year it changed from Woodhatch to Reigate School, and I have a first class honours degree and a distinction at MSc, and a nice secure job in the civil service!

MatBackFeck · 19/11/2008 14:22

Thanks for that NK - all information is interesting to me re: schools (interestingusername too - is it hex?). Interesting to hear that you put H third and got it - you must be very close! I have heard good things about St John's too but I think we are a bit too far away, other side of Reigate. I also really liked Dovers Green in terms of the head and the teaching. I think it is definitely up and coming. Clearly they are trying to do the same with Orchards with the merge with Sandcross which I am sure will help. Not in our timescales though unfortunately.

NKffffffff940d312fX11cd741c71b · 26/11/2008 10:31

Hmmm, yes, my username is nice and succinct isn't it! My closest school is Reigate Parish, however, we are not particularly close to any school. The equal preference scheme did help us as we were able to put holmesdale 3rd and still be offered a place. Having said that, I know that a couple of year's ago no-one was offered a place at Holmesdale or the Parish in my area - Chart Lane area if you are wondering! The only reason we were able to consider St John's was because SCC changed the distance measurement to straight line rather than walking distance - which made a huge difference for us. What have you decided to do?

thanks for your input, always useful. I was on this thread awhile back as we have a 4 year old so are going through the options so am still really interested to hear other peoples experience - so far it has been far more insightful and useful than any school visit, league table etc! My ds has actually now started at a small private school slightly out of the area as we were not able to get him into a state pre-school in Reigate and felt he needed it. We weren;t sufficiently impressed by either RstM or Micklefield in the end. He is loving it and has settled in really well. I am not sure how much of a long term option it is, either in terms of the school or whether we really want him to go all the way through the private system. We are now just waiting to see what helpful suggestion Surrey LEA come up with for our Reception application at the end of this month. At least we have a plan B as expecting to be agrieved.. Do you mind me asking which state schools you moved to and why?

Garfieldandfriends · 05/02/2009 11:16

Interesting points anothersurrymum ...

how long ago did you leave Rsm ? we went to open morning back in Sept and it looked pretty good to us ? maybe they have done more work on the buildings since you were last there? The nursery had just had a complete new make over and was the nicest we have seen (and believe me we have seen a few !) we were also struck by how many of the staff there were quite young - our tour guide told us that because of the increase in numbers at the school there had been a few new staff in the last year or 2. We went into both maths and English lessons in the upper school and the teachers were fab and were left thinking if only we had been taught like that we would have enjoyed school alot more!

The computer and apple mac robot suite was amazing - I had to drag my hubby out .. and as far as I have seen from other local school results 85% of year 6 offers to the Grammar is by way the biggest percentage of leavers going to the grammar from local schools.

Having looked at both Mickelfied and Hawthornes I can that they both have their strengths too its just Rsm seem to fit our criteria best but its so individual and I do realise that as we have registered for our Ds and Dd to go I am going to want to be happy that we have made the right choice but since regitering we now know at least 3 people who send there children to Rsm and really recommend it.....

So Im wondering why you have a negative angle on the school ?

Thanks for the reply anothersurreymum ...

Yes your right from the outside it is hard to choose and having read through some of your personal issues with RsM it makes me realise even more how its down to individual choice as I have heard these exact same critisms stated against the other Reigate Independents (again from people who have/had children at those schools) ! so thats bizzar ! and probably brings us to conclude from this blog that all the schools have their own style, facilities and achievemnets and you need to find the one that you think your child will feel most comfortable and challenged in.

Good luck in your new school I hope it works out better for you.

dinny · 14/02/2009 22:57

anyone got any more feedback about the H (prep)?

sykes · 15/02/2009 11:19

Hi, Dinny. I know quite a few people with children there and they seem reasonably happy. I think if you're planning to move them at 11 then they're not as well prepared for entrance exams as they will be at 13 - the school likes to keep them, obviously, for as long as possible. Great facilities but maybe not as academically strong? Not too sure - awful lot of social activities for parents if that floats your boat.

dinny · 15/02/2009 22:07

Hi, Sykes

Anywhere else you'd recommend we look at? Had a look at ND....wasn't impressed, I have to say....

what are the benefits of staying till 13 and doing common entrance? none for dd presumably...
thanks!
