DD in year 2 so SATS year. Her teacher is now into her 3rd week off, she supposedly has a cold. Methinks either she is suffering with something far more serious and possibly private ie depression/stress or she is a fucking lazy bitch. I am not one of the mums wailing about in the playground as DD is fine, but its just a bit . How much will the supply teacher be getting about £200 per day- bet he's loving it!

As a teacher I'd just like to say FFS to the OP and I never say that on here...what are we not meant to get ill? I have lost count of the times I've dragged myself into work when I should really have been at home getting better, but the guilt at leaving your class is awful. If she's off for 3 weeks I'm pretty sure there will be something up. And if she does have something contagious, would you rather she came back and gave it to your kid(s)?

In a previous role I also had the same experience as someone else on this thread, ie going off one day feeling a bit fluey, ended up being off for 8mths with CFS/ME. The fact that I knew people were probably referring to me as a f-ing lazy bitch actually ended up affecting me really badly, I was so stressed out at being ill iyswim, it was an awful time.

I hope you never take ill.

Oh, and for what it's worth, in some places now supply teachers get the same rates as permanent ones, because they now qualify for sick/holiday pay that they didn't get before so it's all spread out.

suwoo · 22/09/2008 15:53

Back from school. The teacher is now on holiday, so not sure what that means, but the new non mad, non judgemental and calm me isn't going to ponder any further. One thing that you may agree with me on, is that its not great that DD hasn't had a reading assessment or reading book yet though. They've been back 4 weeks. Good job I read to her at home of course .

I'm no trol!! If you all think I've been out of order then fair enough, I must have been. What mumsnet says goes in my book!!

Twiglett · 22/09/2008 15:57

you do know that this thread is both unreasonable and completely out of order in its heartless approach to teachers. Teachers are people too .. and if she's been signed off work for 3 weeks it is NONE OF YOUR BLOODY BUSINESS WHY!

suwoo · 22/09/2008 15:58

I'm no TROLL either.

i took some time off once and told work it was a cold, i'd actually had a miscarriage.

tortoiseshell · 22/09/2008 16:01

@ fucking lazy bitch.

'Cold' - could be 'flu' or could be 'miscarriage' or could be any number of things she doesn't feel she wants to share with parents who call her a 'fucking lazy bitch'.

Supply teachers are qualified.

SATS year - forget about SATs, they are a total non-event in Y2, and totally non-important.

What a horrible OP. It is completely none of your business what is wrong with your DD's teacher. If you are unhappy with the arrangements that are made to cover the class in her absence then that is an issue to take up with school management, but as for coming on here and slagging off someone for being ill, that is completely out of order. What do you want her to do, send youb her medical records to look at so you can check that she is ill enough to deserve the time off work?

suwoo · 22/09/2008 16:06

Lucykate and aunty maggie, yes I would feel terrible if it was something awful like a miscarriage, I hadn't actually considered that.

3littlefrogs · 22/09/2008 16:08

A patient of a colleague took some time off work with what he thought was a bad virus. He was a teacher. Turned out he had leukaemia.

If someone is off work for 3 weeks, then the chances are they are ill.

The supply teacher will be getting a rate of pay that compensates for the fact that he has no employer's contribution towards national insurance or pension, and no paid sick leave provision.

lucykate · 22/09/2008 16:08

what is the alternative?, ill teacher comes into work spreads it to the rest of the school, lots of more teachers now ill, lots of children now also ill, leaving lots of parents taking time off their own work to look after ill children, and then becoming ill themselves meaning more time off work.

i think 1 teacher being off is the lesser of the two

foxytocin · 22/09/2008 16:08

It is no one's business but hers, her GPs and her boss why she is off sick.

It is none of your business how much the supply teacher is being paid.

SATS or no SATS, YABVU and downright nasty.

poppy34 · 22/09/2008 16:12

am with lucykate - I had a cold during both my m/c ..one of worst things was knowing people said this kind of thing. its no one business what is going on

SoupDragon · 22/09/2008 16:13

What a horrible OP!

suwoo · 22/09/2008 16:16

I feel so bad about the miscarriage thing. I really thought that she had a cold and that 3 weeks off was skiving. I didn't give a moments thought until I composed this thread that it could be a euphamism especially for something like a miscarriage.

OP posts:
lucykate · 22/09/2008 16:16

i fibbed about what was up with me as, at the time, my boss was male and not very sympathetic about stuff like that, the last thing i wanted to do was talk to him about what was going on, and then also be faced with a barrage of 'are you ok?' when you go back to work, sometimes it's best to just keep personal stuff personal.

Anchovy · 22/09/2008 16:17

The thing is, three weeks off with a "cold" is extreme. I'm not sure you'd even have 3 whole weeks off for full blown flu. (I haven't had flu for ages, but I seem to remember it was a week/10 days thing-y). So let's face it, it is extremely unlikely to be just a cold.

I don't think the OP is begrudging the teacher time off sick. Nor do I think that everyone needs to know exactly what is wrong with a teacher - they are as entitled as the rest of us both to be ill and to have a bit of privacy. But I think whoever is putting around the "cold" thing (because it is unlikely to be her) is actually doing the teacher a bit of a disservice because it almost invites the "what a wimp - take a lemsip and get on with it like the rest of us" thoughts. She is going to come back and everyone is going to be thinking "3 weeks off for a cold!", which isn't exactly helpful.

I think there are a lot better other ways to deal with illnesses without being hugely transparent about what it is. I would prefer people to know I had "personal issues", "a virus", or something that would actually elicit more sympathy than "a cold".

expatinscotland · 22/09/2008 16:18

why are you so concerned with how much the supply teacher is getting?

what business is it of yours why she's off, maybe it's a female problem and the staff want to keep that personal.

my dad recently had a cold. that went into pneumonia and he spent 10 days in hospital with it.

he's back in there, now, as the infection dehydrated him and he wound up with a kidney infection as well.

thankfully, he's retired and doesn't have to explain out to bitter, wretched angry people that he's near death's door.

suwoo · 22/09/2008 16:20

No, you've got me wrong on the supply teacher thing, I'm just jealous of his money .

OP posts:
suwoo · 22/09/2008 16:21

Anchovy, you've put it so well!

OP posts:
lucykate · 22/09/2008 16:21

suwoo, don't feel bad, that is what threads like this are for, helping people to see things from all sides. you say the teacher is off 'supposedly with a cold', sounds like this theory may have come from playground gossip rather than fact. teachers (normally!, i do know a few who are a bit unscrupulous but won't go into that now) aren't off during term time unless they really, really have to be.
