School Uniform Name Labels

DD starts in reception in September and I wondered if anyone could recommend uniform name labels. Do the iron on ones stay put or should I really go for the sew on ones? Are there any labels which are less scratchy than others (DD hates labels!)

Use a permanent marker and write name on label instead. Lot less hassle!

MrsBadger · 15/07/2008 09:09

I use trad Cash's sew-ins in Storm Findley-Cooper - they're less scratchy than iron-ins IME as the edges don't curl up

for jumpers and pinafores consider sewing them in the front of the neckline so she can check she's wearing the right one without taking it off

Forget labels, use a marker pen. Life is too short to sew on labels.

I think MNetteres get a discount with easy2name

yes 10% here

if you get uniform from a special shop, they often give printed, iron-in labels free if you spend more than £30....(which I always do, so get lots free)

only problem is, they are very good and iron in very well......so well that you cannot remove them to pass the item down to the next child/another child!!

AMumInScotland · 15/07/2008 10:20

I used to put shirt ones at the bottom (inside, just below the last buttonhole) to avoid the scratchy back-of-the-neck effect.

Bridie3 · 15/07/2008 10:35

Marker pen isn't as good as labels. You simply can't see them as quickly and clearly. We have lost very little over the years and have always used name tapes. In the neck. where they are instantly visible. I'd also use red letters in a clear font.

MrsBadger · 15/07/2008 10:46

putting them on the buttonband of shirts as AMIS describes also means you can check them without undressing

do not underestimate the importance of this

Thanks for advice everyone. I've just ordered sew ons direct from Cash www.jjcash.co.uk/secure.htm as they don't charge postage.

Do I need to put them on everything, even socks?

I never did socks, pants or vests - too tricky, he never took them off, and I wouldn't have minded particularly if they'd gone missing.

bigTillyMint · 15/07/2008 14:23

I know sewing them in is a pain, but I have to say that my 2 have never lost any items of schol uniform - v. easy to see sewn-in label!

Friendlypizzaeater · 15/07/2008 14:24

I bought a stamp from GLTC - saved me hours and hours - just stamped his name on the tags ...

bigTillyMint · 15/07/2008 14:25

But I DON'T do socks or pants!

BTW, my son asked me to iron his socks for him as they are too crumpled , but I don't even iron polo shirts! (Oh, I AM a bad mummy!)

marmalady · 15/07/2008 14:28

Mrs badger- what a good idea!

GB Nametapes (found them on line and haveused them)charge only £3.70 for 72 woven name tapes(you can order less if you want)- several colours to choose from and different fonts. They also do iron on ones.

Personally, I start off with sew-in , in past have used iron-on for unexpected items needing names, but iron on start to curl off soon, so now on use laundry marker pens for any extra items or for awkward things like socks- but I admit do not try and namesocks any more.

However, thinking about it, I will sew in name labels to football/rugby socks ,as they will get muddled up and do not want expense of replacing them.

Have lots to sew in now, so try to batches whilst watching something not too absorbing on tv at night. I sew in as as get new stuff- I try not toput new things away until labelled, or else I forget about them until September.

Friendlypizzaeater · 16/07/2008 20:10

A tip I got as well is if you have two kiddies to should order the tapes like this :

Fred Jones Sophie

Then fold over the wrong name when stitching - could save a fortune !

fashionista · 18/07/2008 23:06

I use planet label, stick on labels for clothes lunchboxes and pens pencils etc. You can wash the clothes and the labels stay on, mine stayed on for years.

bluenosesaint · 18/07/2008 23:09

Don't use iron in ones - they curl up and melt onto the iron and are an absolute PITA

MamaG · 18/07/2008 23:14

I just ordered some with surname only

nobody has my surname

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2008 17:04

I love Cash labels - have a real thing about them find it hard to sew them in with my eyesight now but it is so worth it. They look nice - (got fancy ones) and sadly make me feel like a good Mum!

(dd has never lost an item of clothing but i expect I've jinxed next year by saying that!)

One big advantage with sew in labels is its easy to pass on clothes - I unpick them and they get reused. Whereas I bought dd a couple of jumpers from the school secondhand shop - they are marked with permanent markers so I'm going to have to rename my dd now.

normal socks I don't label - plus I don't buy white socks anymore as dd is allowed blue socks. After a year they still fit and don't look grubby.

juuule · 19/07/2008 17:29

I just write the name on the label in permanent marker.

I use Cash's sew ins and ordered them in pink script on a black background with a little flower embroidery - that way, my daughter, who started school totally unable to read her name (aged 2.10) could recognise her name tapes as they were quite different to anyone else's

SqueakyPop · 20/07/2008 18:26

I use giant woven nametapes for the outside of games' kit, lab coat, art apron etc.

Ordinary Cash's tapes for everything else.
