TBH I thought I'd be really pissed off but I think it might be a good thing. I'm hoping she'll be really keen and as she's young, the children will like her

She visited pre-school yesterday (not part of school) and DS liked her, said she seemed kind. The pre-school teachers said they liked her, the leader (a blunt Yorkshirewoman!) was impressed by the way she took their observations on board and wasn't all "I'm a teacher" about things.

i think i'd be pleased (if a little scared).. new blood, very keen, new ideas

LittleMyDancing · 02/07/2008 12:45

oh that's scary, when people in authority start being SO much younger than us.

Still, she sounds nice!

Flamesparrow · 02/07/2008 12:45

No time to get jaded, tis a good thing

HuwEdwards · 02/07/2008 12:46

We have a very young Reception teacher, I think she'd been at the school a year when DD1 started - she was and still is 3 years later, brilliant.

Twiglett · 02/07/2008 12:46

it's rather normal actually for reception teachers to be new

RosaLuxembunting · 02/07/2008 12:46

DD1 (Yr1) has had an NQT this year - she is LOVELY. And DD1 has really enjoyed being in her class.

BandofMothers · 02/07/2008 12:46

Bless her, bet she's nervous.

Everyone has to start somewhere.

RosaLuxembunting · 02/07/2008 12:47

Oh, god, DD3 I mean - DD1 is not Yr1, she is Yr6!

MamaG · 02/07/2008 12:47

Is it Twig? I didn't know that.

ds1 had an nqt for his reception year and i didn't get along with her tbh. she didn't really 'get' little ones and expected way too much of them.

ds2 has a very experienced reception teacher with little ones of her own and she is FAB. the difference is amazing.

SlartyBartFast · 02/07/2008 12:48

that can't be right twiglett, logically

MamaG · 02/07/2008 12:50

There will be 19 boys and 9 girls in the class, so I think it will be a bit of a challenge. We have a new (keen as mustard) Head who I like hugely already, so I'm sure she'll be keeping a close eye, plus there is an excellent TA in there who has done it for years.

My ds had a nqt in yr1 and she was really lovely and had a great way with the children. She was funny but firm but her spelling was shocking and would frequently ask me if she'd spelt something right on the board when I went in to help!!

Freckle · 02/07/2008 13:08

DS1 had a NQT in Y1 and she was brilliant. Full of enthusiasm and fresh ideas. Really connected with the children and seemed to get where each was coming from. Great loss to the school when she left.

Twiglett · 02/07/2008 13:09

IME it is quite normal for NQTs to be in the reception (never year 2 though)

an NQT is still fully qualified and has done a year in school and will still have a mentor to talk to and get help from

dd1 had the most WONDERFUL NQT in Yr 1. Was the first person to pick her dyslexia up and really got her.

Experienced TA plus NQT is good combo

bigTillyMint · 02/07/2008 13:11

My DD had a brilliant NQT in Y2.

GooseyLoosey · 02/07/2008 13:13

The best teacher I ever had in my primary school was in his first post. He was so enthusiastic and youthful and somehow the enthusiasm was passed on to us.

My son started in January and his reception teacher is newly qualified in her first post. She's lovely, firm but fair and all the kids like her.

teslagirl · 02/07/2008 15:03

DS1 has just finished a Y3/4 composite, as a year 4, with a NQT. I'm not ENTIRELY sure it's been a rip-roaring success. The NQT is 23 and I believe, for fear of 'losing control of the class', was frequently FAR too abrupt and- well, rude tbh! DS1, however, wasn't too worried about her manner which I guess is the important thing, but I suspect this teacher will improve over time as she gains confidence and maturity. I must say of ALL the teachers my DSs have had, the 'best' have all had DCs of their own, albeit grown and gone. Anyway, for us, if we were going to get a NQT, yr 4 was fine (as opposed to say 6) and everyone has to start somewhere, don't they?

ChopsTheDuck · 02/07/2008 15:10

we had one this year, for ds1, y1. She was lovely. had a lot more time than some the mroe exp teachers to talk to parents. Did feel that she lacked control a bit, but she seems to have improved over the year. ds1 has sn and she has been excellent at supporting him. I think I'd have been concerned had I known beforehand. I think I found out halfway through the first term. Agree that she will have support.
