After school club - to think this is expensive?

bigblockofcheeseday · 30/04/2026 12:57

Our local after school club provider has just put up their fees. I know things are going up but wow!

New fees:

£14.50 per child (3.15-5 with light meal)
Or
£17.50 per child (3.15-6 with light meal)

For reference holiday camp 830-4 is £30 per child which I think is a bargain.

I pay similar. £14 for after school club 3.30-5.00pm. East Anglia

Roads · 30/04/2026 13:00

I don't think it's expensive. 3.15-6 is approximately £6 an hour for someone to look after your child, feed them and provide them with activities. How much do you think it should cost?

MadeForThis · 30/04/2026 13:33

Ours is £19.25 from 3-6. Holidays are £40/day snacks only.

Twilightstarbright · 30/04/2026 13:52

Similar here.

Lordofmyflies · 30/04/2026 13:54

I think that’s about right. The all day club is cheap!

MerryGuide · 30/04/2026 15:46

£15 until 6 with a snack here, so sounds ok. Holiday sounds a bargain!

ShetlandishMum · 30/04/2026 15:47

Normal

Throwawayusernameforme · 30/04/2026 15:49

£5 from 3.15-5:15 here, with a small snack.
Yes, yours sounds v expensive to me.

It's not expensive, yours is just incredibly cheap in comparison. You're paying £2.50 an hour for someone to care for you child which is ridiculously cheap. Around here you wouldn't even find someone to look after your pet for that.

Laf90 · 30/04/2026 15:53

Ours is £7.50 3.30-5.30. No meals but do provide a snack and a drink.

Am assuming will be subsidised? We’re £15 3-6

I'm guessing so too. £5 for two hours is probably less than my own parents paid for childcare when I was younger.

It's all I've known, and yes it's great value. You can do a shorter time for half the price as well!

They do it in house, rather than contract it out, to keep the costs low.

I know some schools locally who do until 4 or 4.30 for free!

PurpleThistle7 · 30/04/2026 16:07

Sounds about right. Ours is a bit less but no food provided.

JustGiveMeReason · 30/04/2026 16:07

No, that is less than I would expect to pay.
Not expensive at all.
You are talking about staff for nearly 3 hours of childcare, plus activities, plus food and drink, plus all the overheads like building, heating, lighting, staff pensions, training, etc.

You're very fortunate even in house most schools here are significantly more than that. I'm guessing the staff at your child's school are expected to run the club rather than paid extra for doing so.

I'd love to know what area you're in if this is common in schools where you are. Apart from after school clubs like football, Lego, dance etc which usually run for 45 mins-1 hour I've never known a school offer free wrap around care each day.

Sunseansandandautism · 30/04/2026 16:12

Cheaper than our school.

It's not really for free though. Teachers or support staff are paying with their time.

Reportingfromwherever · 30/04/2026 16:16

Mine is £15 per session - Yorkshire.

WhereHasMyPlanetGone · 30/04/2026 16:25

£18 from 3.40 until 6.15 here. Thats in house.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 30/04/2026 16:34

We pay £20 3:30 until 6pm. We’re up north where it’s supposedly cheaper to live 😕

Small city/large town in the South West.

Collincroup · 30/04/2026 17:39

At our school it's £15 per hour, so if they stayed 3.30pm-6pm it would cost £37.50 per session. They have cold snacks included like rice cakes and fruit, but not a light meal.

We're in central London, at a prep school. They do have a free morning drop-off service from 8-8.30am (no breakfast club, dcs are supervised in the playground until the bell goes).

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 30/04/2026 17:41

Well my nephew’s school in Catford is £19 per session!
