Neighbour’s dd had her first day of school today. Came out with a photograph of her holding up a sign - sign preprinted A3 size.

My name is xxx
Its my first day in Reseption

Did the child write it or did mum write it and think she was being cute (I can’t bear ‘cute’ misspellings - skool…🙄)?

Neither. OP says it was a pre-printed sign provided by the school

It is absolutely true. I have seen the picture.
I know my neighbour and I know her dd.

My DS came home with a printed sheet that his TAs had written about themselves. It was copied and handed out to over 20 children to bring home. One TA had written " I like whatching the sea".

Of course you'd say it's true, you're the OP! Personally I don't believe everything I read on Mumsnet/the internet in general. I'm sorry, but this story feels somewhat embellished. I'd believe a story claiming a mistake to have slipped through the net. Three mistakes (one glaringly obvious) is just too shocking to believe.

Reseption? Sorry, I don't buy it. IF it is true, the only likely explanation is that it was made by a well meaning older child in the school. I fail to believe someone employed by the school to educate young children wrote 'Reseption', or that no other members of staff spotted such an obvious error.

MotherJessAndKittens · 03/09/2025 19:34

If a teacher wrote it, it’s inexcusable. I thought the child had written it and was thinking they had done well being only in reception 😳

Other posters have commented on spelling errors made by teachers and TAs. Do you disbelieve those too?

Sorry but I agree with @BoleynMemories13 . A teacher that presumably has seen the word reception on the door of her classroom/every book in her classroom/contract etc can't spell a word . It's not a common mistake even. Plus the printer and any other adults in the room . It's glaringly obvious.

I genuinely can't even imagine this being something I have ever seen.

My dc's primary school teachers and TAs made loads of spelling mistakes. Some were on the displays in the classrooms. My dc sometimes corrected them! It's crap, but unfortunately very common. God knows how they manage to teach for the Y6 SPaG SATS.

purpleme12 · 03/09/2025 19:51

If this is true then i would not hesitate to say something school and i'd let them know it's pretty awful

Displays, reports and letters home to parents. Regularly.

Dreadful! I would definitely be complaining to the school about a teacher who couldn't cope with basic grammar and spelling.

It's not the situation which I don't believe, it's the content. We're all human. Everyone makes and misses errors from time to time, especially when typing, but 'Reseption' is not a common spelling mistake or accidental typo. The other two errors aren't ideal but are more understandable, as the apostrophe and missing s could have easily been missed accidentally through quick typing (assuming this was a typed sign, rather than handmade?). The errors should have been picked up through a quick proof-read though, if they were indeed accidental rather than examples of poor grammar. I'd say the fact they were missed is more of an error than the fact they were made in the first place, if you know what I mean? I make all sorts of errors when typing quickly. I would always proof-read something which is going out to parents though. That is poor, on their part.

IF it is true, that practitioner should be nowhere near a classroom. It's very concerning that someone who has that poor a grasp of the English language is responsible for teaching the next generation. It is so concerning that I am struggling to believe it can possibly be true. I really hope it's not.

I wonder if older children were making these signs to welcome the new starters? My DD’s class had some sort of buddying activities with year 6 in the first term. Each reception child had a buddy from year 6 and they did reading together and outside play.
It was more then 10 years ago so I can easily imagine it to be replaced by computer work nowadays. 😆
