Neighbour’s dd had her first day of school today. Came out with a photograph of her holding up a sign - sign preprinted A3 size.

My name is xxx
Its my first day in Reseption

Neighbour is a bit 😳

I understood your post OP. Not sure why others didn’t. I’d have contacted the school immediately about that.

Dinoswearunderpants · 03/09/2025 16:30

It's quite comical really. I mean surely someone would have noticed the spelling?

DappledThings · 03/09/2025 16:30

3 errors in just 15 words? That's bad. Yes neighbour should say something.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 03/09/2025 16:31

@HappySummerDays actually, that is disgraceful!! definitely say something to the school!! I must admit that my grandchildren went to a private school due to the atrocious spelling by teachers at the local primary school!!! a teacher who cannot spell is about as much use as a chocolate teapot! the bad spelling put us right off!

Who the hell looks at a family capturing a lovely moment and picks it apart like that.
Your neighbour should get a life.

Missed the massive drip.

What drip?

Chewbecca · 03/09/2025 16:32

I would in those circumstances, yes, if you're certain it was written by school staff.

Why does the parent’s spelling abilities have anything to do with the school… very confused. She did a lovely memento that obviously means a lot to her, let’s not judge her on her spelling, or anyone else. Unless I’ve misunderstood, how a person is, kind / loving is what we should be prioritising instead of gossiping about spelling?

It is the teacher's incorrect spelling of "reseption" instead of reception that is the issue together with other grammatical errors. Hence the neighbour wonders whether to say something to the school.

Personally I would.

DinaofCloud9 · 03/09/2025 16:35

Yes that's embarrassing for the school.

It was pretty clear from the op actually.

stichguru · 03/09/2025 16:42

I definately would. That's awful coming from a school trying to educated children in spelling!

Moveoverdarlin · 03/09/2025 16:50

LegoPicnic · 03/09/2025 16:19

@Moveoverdarlin I think from what OP has said the photo / sign was provided by the school.

Assuming this is a school where they teach in English, you’d expect this kind of thing to have correct spelling and punctuation - it’s not setting a great example to the kids otherwise.

Oh I see!! Sorry I totally misunderstood. I thought that OP saw the neighbour come out of the house with the sign, meaning that is was the parent wrote the sign.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 03/09/2025 16:54

@HappySummerDays I am actually quite perplexed at the number of posters who do not see anything wrong with the preprinted sign!!! that itself is worrying!

CopperWhite · 03/09/2025 16:54

I’d have assumed the mistakes were one purpose to show that it’s a child who has just started school and that they would hand the child with a similar sign, spelled correctly in year 6 as a leaving thing. Although if that was the idea, they should have gone with ‘resepshun’, even if it does look bloody awful.

PosiePetal · 03/09/2025 16:56

A spelling mistake and a missing apostrophe.

When my children were in school, I sometimes felt that the teachers needed to 'see me after class' about their spelling!

And a missing s on years. A mistake on every line.

I just noticed that, too! Dreadful.

A3? Blimey, that’s a bit of overkill, what are the parents supposed to do with it, apart from correcting the spelling mistakes and returning it ……….

1543click · 03/09/2025 17:02

We all make mistakes but that's absolutely awful. It should be mentioned.

arcticpandas · 03/09/2025 17:03

@Bluevelvetsofa was it written like this:?
Its my first day in Reseption

With "reseption" and the other mistakes I would be "that parent" and talk to the teacher/head. It's embarrassing for the school !

Legomania · 03/09/2025 17:07

Yeah I would say something. You will get people coming in to say that you are being too exacting, that the writer probably has dyslexia and picking apart your own grammar etc.

It doesn't get better. One of the TAs in DS1's class thinks that 'forest' is spelled with two rs. I think often it comes from the TAs and the teachers notice but don't like to say anything.

yourefunningme · 03/09/2025 17:37

Urgh, that’s awful, no two ways about it. I’d definitely say something.

Thatcannotberight · 03/09/2025 17:53

Oh dear. Please speak up, but be aware that sign will be the first of many such errors, if my son's schools have been anything to go by.

BoleynMemories13 · 03/09/2025 18:20

Am I the only one who doesn't believe this can be a true story?

I may have believed you on the lack of apostrophe, or the missing s (and yes I would definitely say something. They need to know that sort of sloppiness isn't acceptable, especially on something which is meant to be a momento). The spelling of 'Reseption' is such a glaring error though. The teacher or TA who made the sign would definitely not have been the only one to see this sign all day. Several other members of staff will have seen it, either when the photos were taken or when they were printed. There's no way this photo would have made it home if this spelling error genuinely did happen (which I don't believe it did, sorry).

SullysBabyMama · 03/09/2025 18:32

As a TA, I would definitely want to know if this was me as I would want to make sure this never happened again.
It’s incredibly embarrassing.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 03/09/2025 18:35

Did the child write it or did mum write it and think she was being cute (I can’t bear ‘cute’ misspellings - skool…🙄)?
