End of year workbooks.
DD y1 was upset today because everyone else got to come home with all their end of year workbooks books but she wasn't given her.
Obviously going to ask the teacher tomorrow why but dose anyone else have any insight why this might happened?
Thanks

Teacher forgot probably or maybe they are not all full and will re use them in September

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 16/07/2025 18:02

A selection of children always have their books kept back for moderation. You’ll get them at some point next year.

stichguru · 16/07/2025 18:02

There are about 1000 reasons why this could have happened....

Astleyxyz · 16/07/2025 18:02

Ask ! Did she have a bag to put them in ? We used to have to send ours in with a carrier bag

picnicfuntimes · 16/07/2025 18:03

Usually because they have to keep examples - in case ofsted arrive in September

My dd (now 21) is still sore that the school kept her year 2 workbook. She was at her peak kid creativity but they kept it back as a WAGOLL (what a good one looks like) for the next year group.

Why wouldn't she understand?

It's perfectly normal and all you need to say is the teacher thinks her books are such good examples of the learning the class has done this year that they need to keep them until next year.

No need for any upset it's not like she won't ever get them?

Almost certainly this. I used to try and spread it so I kept 3 kids maths, 3 different kids English, 3 different kids topic, or ask who didn’t mind not taking their books. But some schools may specify the exact kids who need to leave theirs and some may want the same kids books across the board so it may not work.

I remember one year a couple of girls being really disappointed they couldn’t have their books (they were y6 so leaving the school too). As they’d been so gutted I kept them and when they returned for an alumni event at the end of y7 I went to hand them their y6 books and both they and their parents chuckled and declined to take them. It’s amazing how quickly the disappointment faded 😂

Teacher here. We are expected to keep two examples from each ability group in all subjects. The children whose books are kept are not chosen by us. In my school these same children are tracked right through the school and only receive their books when they leave Y6.

moose17 · 16/07/2025 18:11

I have said to my daughter that I’m sure her teacher was just very busy today. But my daughter is still very upset sorry if that offend you I’ll be sure to tell my 6 year old to get a grip.

Because I have absolutely no idea until I speak to the teacher tomorrow.
Obviously I’ve told her not to get upset and I’m sure the teacher as just forgot.
She’s my only child I’ve never had to deal with this before thats why I asked a question on here.

Thank you.
that makes sense and I will try explain that to my daughter.
when she was in reception she did come home with helicopter storybook.
she just upset that everyone else seem to get their books but she didn’t get her art book because that her favourite subject.

My DD would been upset at that age too, its poor form imo for the teacher to not give a heads up to you.

moose17 · 16/07/2025 18:30

Seriously give your head a wobble.
because of course I want my 6 year old to home upset and crying thats ever mum dream 🙄

Behave, most 6 year olds would be miffed at being left out. If every other child recieved their books they probably would be left wondering why they didn't and feel sad about it; what seems a small deal to us is a big deal at that age where school is such a huge part of their lives. OP just wants to make her DD feel better and understand why it happened, doesnt seem unreasonable.

Yes exactly that if someone would’ve just explained to her at school I think she would have made sense of it more and not been so upset.
her teacher is fantastic and I’m sure she just so busy being the end of the school term

I'd have said "I expect she forgot, I'll ask the teacher tomorrow." Then changed the subject.

Chances are that your dc won't care tomorrow anyway.

Guilty! Teachers expected kids to pass on the message. Only mine has adhd and clearly wasn't paying attention at that point

Yes I have told her that I think her teachers just forgot and it’s nothing to worry about. Hopefully by the morning it’s all forgotten like you said

We always have to keep some back when Ofsted are due, in case they turn up in September and there's not yet much to show from the new year.

I hate it, as it always seems so unfair on the children whose work has been chosen to keep as good examples for each level of attainment. I do always explain this to the children and their parents though, so they know why they've not got it yet and to assure them they'll get it back one day.

I imagine this is what has happened, and it just slipped the teacher's mind to tell you. It's possible, if your daughter knows that 'everyone got their workbook but her' that it was explained to her, otherwise how would she know she's been left out? She probably just didn't understand or remember why, which is why she feels upset as she feels she's been singled out (maybe even that she's done something wrong)?

I'd ask in the morning, but there'll be a simple explanation.

Does your child not bring a bag to school every day as standard? It is a pain when children don't routinely bring a bookbag or backpack to carry all their things in, especially this time of year when there's so much to hand out. I keep a stash of carrier bags for whenever they are needed, but not every teacher will have these to hand. Parents shouldn't need reminding that their child needs a bag, it's a basic necessity.
