End of year school workbooks

End of year workbooks.
DD y1 was upset today because everyone else got to come home with all their end of year workbooks books but she wasn't given her.
Obviously going to ask the teacher tomorrow why but dose anyone else have any insight why this might happened?
Thanks

Does your child not bring a bag to school every day as standard? It is a pain when children don't routinely bring a bookbag or backpack to carry all their things in, especially this time of year when there's so much to hand out. I keep a stash of carrier bags for whenever they are needed, but not every teacher will have these to hand. Parents shouldn't need reminding that their child needs a bag, it's a basic necessity.

Yes she take a book bag, backpack and a lunchbox in every day. I also put a bag for life in her backpack for a workbooks as it was put on dojo the day before.

We always have to keep some back when Ofsted are due, in case they turn up in September and there's not yet much to show from the new year.

I hate it, as it always seems so unfair on the children whose work has been chosen to keep as good examples for each level of attainment. I do always explain this to the children and their parents though, so they know why they've not got it yet and to assure them they'll get it back one day.

I imagine this is what has happened, and it just slipped the teacher's mind to tell you. It's possible, if your daughter knows that 'everyone got their workbook but her' that it was explained to her, otherwise how would she know she's been left out? She probably just didn't understand or remember why, which is why she feels upset as she feels she's been singled out (maybe even that she's done something wrong)?

I'd ask in the morning, but there'll be a simple explanation.

My daughter told me just be for home time the children were called at one by one and given their workbooks to put in a bag but her name was never called. She only had her usual teacher to lunchtime and had a different teacher after so maybe that’s where the confusion has happened.
I’ve told my daughter I imagine the teacher has just forgotten and I will ask tomorrow.
her usual teacher is absolutely fantastic and I couldn’t praise her enough.

I was responding to the poster who says her child got their books late as they missed the message to bring in a bag. I'm questioning why parents need a reminder to bring something their child should have every day as standard. To me that's like saying remember to wear shoes.

Her books weren't in the pile then. A simple explanation. The other teacher wasn't to know, if she didn't ask at the time where her books were. The class teacher will sort it out for her in the morning, or at least be able to explain why she's not getting them yet.

Bit of an odd thing to run to MN for. Presumably there’s been multiple occasions during her school life things haven’t quite gone as expected. You just say don’t worry we’ll ask the teacher tomorrow. Or even better get her to ask.

I can honestly say in the scheme of things asking about school workbooks on MN Is one of the least odd things I’ve seen. She’s six years old and hasn’t really experienced school life yet. She is very shy and quiet and doesn’t want to ask that’s why she wants me to do it tomorrow. But I have told her that the teacher is probably just forgotten and I will ask for her tomorrow and try not to get to upset over it

Yes I completely agree

Our school sent out a message this week to take in a bag. As they do indeed all take in a small rucksack or book bag every day but that’s not enough space to fit in a years worth of work, art, lunchtime colouring club cos it’s raining missed party invites and whatever else school quite rightly don’t want they’ve accumulated in their drawers. DS has a normal sized rucksack and it wouldn’t have gone in there!

Fair enough. We tend to send things like artwork home throughout the year, rather than leave it all to the end. So many don't bring their bag as standard every day, so I jumped to the conclusion that that was the case here too. Apologies to Bitzee if it wasn't.

My daughter 6 year old and was upset over it so sorry if that’s not ok with you.
I have told her I’m sure her teacher I just forgot but I was just wondering.

Yes but rather than immediately assuage her concern you seem to have also got yourself in a twist about it

Given this is your thread, you’re hardly the most objective! 😆

and that poster said a “bit odd” not “very odd”

Truegum2 · 17/07/2025 04:46

hopefully I can try and make DD understand why it’s happened

so she remained very upset and concerned even after you said not to worry because the teacher will have likely forgotten and even though DD thinks it’s “everybody” you’re sure that others too will be the same? But despite saying this you think she hasn’t understood and is very upset?

(I’d have finished off with …
“and now DD let’s talk about some of the exciting plans we have over the summer hols!”?

hopspot · 17/07/2025 09:40

As a teacher of this age group and knowing the context of a different teacher giving books out, I think the most likely explanation is that her bag of books was covered by a coat or a taken down display or something and not spotted by the cover teacher.

It’s strange a whole bag has gone missing as the teacher will be clearing the classroom and will have noticed a stray bag . I think the teacher will have returned to the classroom after school, spotted your daughter’s bag and she will get it today.

I often keep examples of work but never every book for one child. It’s usually Maths for one and English for another as it’s not fair on the child to not receive any work. I’m sure it will be easily sorted today.

Inthecafe · 20/07/2025 07:43

Don’t leave us hanging OP!! I’m on the edge of my seat. Did you DD get her books or is her summer ruined??
