Blinking pc crap about suncream at school...

dd is in reception

A couple of days ago her teacher said that they are not allowed to put suncream on children

Fair enough I guess - but she said that they can bring suncream in and put on themselves. DD is very adept at this.

So today I slapped some on and took her in with a bottle. Now they ahve changed their minds and the children can't put it on at all.

ffs
it's maaaaaaaaaaaaaaad I tell you

This drives me nuts.

I can see the teachers POV - think about how long it takes to put suncream on 30 children.

Can they not organise a parents' rota, or is there some law preventing folk from touching other people's children on school property in case they are mad perverts? FFS they let you go in and nose through the books listen to other children read.

Gah.

I take it they will be keeping all the children safely indoors at playtime?

SpacePuppy · 08/05/2008 11:18

send her in with a hat next time.

MerlinsBeard · 08/05/2008 11:19

At ds1s school you can't go in and out it on, they can't put it on and they may lose or forget a cap but that doesn't protect their arms and legs

CountessDracula · 08/05/2008 11:19

she has a hat

I just find it pathetic

Ooh, pretty girl CD, love the sombrero!

It's just appalling. I'm usually not in favour of sueing willy-nilly but I think that children coming home from school with burnt arms and legs is a damn good reason to take legal action. If your child were burnt in the chemistry lab there'd be incident reports and investigations galore.

Again, gah.

MerlinsBeard · 08/05/2008 11:26

wasn't there a report (linked on here last year ) that the all day suncream was actually no protection at all after a number of hours?

Is it called P10 or something like that?

stripeymama · 08/05/2008 11:30

Send her in UV protective clothing (like this on very sunny days?

I try not to use suncream on dd and she spends most of the summer in a sunsuit and sunhat.

nailpolish · 08/05/2008 11:33

why wont they let her do it herself?

nailpolish · 08/05/2008 11:34

CD

boots have buy one get one free just now and they have suncream for children that supposed to last 6hrs

i got some yesterday

RubberDuck · 08/05/2008 11:36

We use the piz buin all day (factor 15 - more than good enough for UK sun, would use a higher factor abroad for them though). Neither child has burned yet and it has appeared to last all day. They tend to live outside when the weather is good at home too and are pretty fair skinned.

morningpaper · 08/05/2008 11:37

I don't really understand the idea that it needs re-applying, if they are just pottering around school - they don't really SWEAT, so does it come off, or what?

What are the physics of it?

Oliveoil · 08/05/2008 11:37

I have to get suncream today, good to hear boots have bogof

need hats too

nailpolish · 08/05/2008 11:39

trust you mp to get all questiony about it

katwith3kittens · 08/05/2008 11:45

Its a tricky one...

last year DS1s teacher put cream on all her class ( its an independent school so only 16 of them so time / rules maybe not an issue ?) and he came out in a rash !

She was most aplolgetic and said this was the first time this had ever happened. I sent him in with his own tube of nivea for the rest of the year few days that we got sun .

I use Piz Buin factor 30 day long cream on the DS's. They get it put on whilst getting dressed, then it's out of the way for the day (also ensures they get a full covering, rather than a gap between ends of clothes and start of lotion. It's not good with water though, so I do notice that they get quite brown hands. Should really add some waterproof factor 50 hand stuff to my selection! The Piz Buin stuff is expensive (£19.49 in Boots), but I usually manage to pick it up somewhere at BOGOF. I do top up mid-afternoon if it's particularly hot, but they've never burnt if I don't for some reason.

WanderingTrolley · 08/05/2008 11:56

I think the idea is that it has a half life of about 2 hours mp, so you need to keep buying reapplying it.

[conspiracy]

CatIsSleepy · 08/05/2008 11:59

Boots Once cream is good
can vouch for the fact that it works too- dd was outside for many hours on monday and didn't burn

DrNortherner · 08/05/2008 11:59

This annoys me too. I mean how long are they outside for anyway when at school?

All the things ds has to atke to school with him - hat, sun cream, book bag, water bottle, homework etc etc

Blimey, I rolled into school as a kid not taking anything with me!

pifflewaffle · 08/05/2008 12:02

I am shocked that alot of nurseries/pre-schools will not put suncream on such young children. Their skin is so much thinner at this age and need alot more protection. I am lucky it would seem that my DD1 pre-school will slap on the suncream. The parents fill in an authorisation form to cover the school and everyone is happy. In fact they are quite hot on the sun protection (lots of spare hats if children have forgotten theirs).

diplodocus · 08/05/2008 12:04

Stripeymama - those suits are great, but only have 3/4 length arms and legs, so there is still a lot of skin exposed in my experience (can't find full length ones).

aintnomountainhighenough · 08/05/2008 12:16

Oh good I thought it was just me who was annoyed about this. I was going to post today on this very topic! I have sent my DD in with a stick to put on her face and a hat but as other posters have said this doesn't do arms and legs. She did mention yesterday that someone had the all day stuff however am not convinced about this but need to investigate.

I think this is yet another area that shows how far schools and curriculum are behind. This type of thing should be included everyday in schools. It should become routine that hats are put on and suncream is slapped on. It is, I believe, in Australia. I expect as usual it will take lots of skin cancer to get anything changed. Sorry am moaning.

singersgirl · 08/05/2008 12:20

Do all your children really burn during 20 minute playtimes? Just asking, really genuinely, as I never put it on mine for school, both blue-eyed blonds, and they don't seem to change colour in any way. I guess by the end of summer their arms are vaguely weak tea coloured rather than white, but never pink or brown.

Obviously I use suncream if we are going to be out for an hour or more, or going to the pool or beach. But never have for school.

CountessDracula · 08/05/2008 12:22

I still don't know who you are sm!
