Child came home with the wrong uniform

Hi,
my child came home with someone else’s jumper and I realised when we had gotten home, they gave his to a different child as soon as it was the next day I had handed the jumper back to his teachers. I have been asking for my child’s one back for almost a week now he had only worn it for not even half a day! I am getting a bit frustrated now and need answers on what steps I can take next as uniform is not cheap…
what’s annoying is my child is in age 5-6 years and he came back with an age 3-4 years the sleeves were half way up his arms so how did they not realise.

On the nicer things I sew my child's name on the outside. So dd pe hoody which was expensive, her name is the outside front. I have shown her where is is ( so she can police it herself if its nabbed). You can't unpick the sewing either. It's too well done

That’s a great idea rather than writing it on a tiny label which comes washed away within 1 wash, I was looking at a label printer for uniform it’s cheap off Amazon as well

I sewed name tags into the 40+ pieces of DD’s school uniform last year and not a single item went missing. A friend gave me this tip after she suspected that other parents at her DC’s school were peeling off sticky name tags and replacing with their own. Far harder and more conspicuous to unstitch a name label.

I would recommend woven labels instead, like these: www.wovenlabelsuk.com/school-labels/wl-01.html

My top tip is to buy these https://cashsnametapes.co.uk/products/8mm-woven-nametapes#judgeme_product_reviews and sew them into all the clothes they remove at school.
It'll take a bit of time but saves you money replacing lost items and saves your child's school huge amounts of time spent looking for things.
They don't fade like biro on a label either.

I also find that sewing name tags in largely resolves this issue. I know they're a hassle and the stick-on ones are much easier, but we haven't had a single item of clothing with a sewn-in name tag go missing so far.

TeenToTwenties · 16/09/2024 19:24

The other trick I have seen here is to use a different colour thread and purposely make it show through to the outside. Then you have more chance spotting which kid is wearing your jumper.

I would absolutely be doing this if it’s not returned. The jumper was misplaced on school premises therefore the school need to be more proactive about it being returned, particularly as you are dealing with 5-6 year olds. DD’s school jumper is £40 and its not money that can just be pissed down the drain.

£40 for a school jumper?!

SBHon · 16/09/2024 19:27

Someone told me a good tip was using sharpie across the inside under the neck and writing in massive letters.

GrandHighPoohbah · 16/09/2024 19:31

You can't assume that because you have a particular child's jumper, then they must have yours. My DS was once involved in a four way mix up! Luckily it was a small school and all four boys were friends, but that might not be the case. So you can't really do more than ask once if they have it.

As PP have said, stuff going missing is a frustrating part of school life but sewing labels in definitely helps.

Blarn · 16/09/2024 19:32

It's a nightmare. Dd2 came home in someone else's last week. Sent it back in but found out that she didn't actually had it in but left it on a bench outside... and she is in year 3! I've stopped getting logo jumpers until they are a bit older, it's just not worth the hassle.

his teacher had said they must have put it on the child who’s jumper he had, so obviously I would assume that it was given to him… the school said to label the child’s uniforms and had been so I don’t understand why they wouldn’t check before hand. It was a complete different jumper to his 🙄

the schools saying it has to have the logo on them unfortunately say for instance if they leave the school premises then they know that the child is in that school, the only items I don’t buy with the logo on is polo shirts and PE shorts.

Oh that is annoying. But also mental: if they leave the premises?! Just keep badgering the teacher and ask to check lost property, kids seem very bad at doing it themselves.

BoleynMemories13 · 16/09/2024 20:17

I assumed you were on about a Reception child who has just started school. By year 1 you should be teaching your child to be more responsible for his own belongings, rather than blaming the school for losing his things. Did your son not realise the jumper he put on was completely different to the one he was wearing, which had a hood? That is really not the school's responsibility.

Are you certain it's the child whose jumper you had who has your son's? Could there have been a 3 (or more) way switch? It's definitely worth asking around to get all parents to check labels.

Ask the teacher what their system is for storing jumpers the children have removed. Do they have their own drawer to put their things in? Once you know the system, remind your son of this. Ultimately, he needs to learn to be responsible for his own things.

It's likely he put the wrong jumper on in the home time rush. It's very unfair to moan at the school staff for not noticing his jumper looked too small. After all, you didn't notice until you got home...

Yes days out and also witnessed a few children jumping over the fences and escaping, had a few incidents in this school as teachers wasn’t watching kids and resulted in one being bitten and the one who had got bitten punched another kid in the mouth and his tooth came out lol, I don’t know what’s happening with them lately as they was a good school a couple of years ago I’m thinking of swapping his schools as he’s only in year 1. I’ve asked them every morning and at the end of the school day since the Thursday when I handed the other child’s jumper back still no luck, I’m going to put him in breakfast club tomorrow and see if I can see the child’s dad so I can speak to him myself as it’s getting nowhere.

It’s ridiculous! 2 pieces of each uniform item is a total cost of a grand.

Cattery · 17/09/2024 08:46

All you’ll get in the lost property are all the boiled and fried fourth-hand crap that no one wants because they’ve swiped the nicer ones. Ask me how I know.

Blarn · 17/09/2024 10:48

The missing uniform will happen in every school but children escaping will not. Once? Awful and they make sure it never happens again by checking safeguarding, procedures etc. More than once? No, I'd be looking to love schools.

The issue with this school is that they have hired friends rather than professionals, it’s very cliquey. Got rid of the teachers who actually could handle/deal with these types of pupils now they don’t really help out the kids instead label them as naughty. My child needs 1to1 learning and it’s a nightmare trying to talk to the teacher once the school day is over he’s been like this since nursery most people now don’t bother doing their jobs properly& I get they have things to do after school but to be heard would be nice… I spoken to the deputy head while I had a meeting last year due to social services as his dad had been in jail and things had to be put into place for supervised visits so they arranged the meeting for the school about how my child was getting on, his reports would come back as amber or red apart from uniform and attendance when I raised the issue of thinking he has ADHD they brushed it off and sent another report that week with all green, I spoken to the doctors about my child’s behaviour during the 6 week holidays and confirmed ADHD but they now don’t assess that until they’re 6 and he is 5. Most parents have taken their child out after them raising their concerns about their child’s needs and they refused and got the answers from the other schools… they have gone lazy. It irritates me alls I want for him is the best education he can get along with the help as I struggled in school myself and was failed massively. But what do we parents know ay🙄

Most definitely!! I spoke to the child’s father today and asked he said he will have a look and bring it in at the end of the day so fingers crossed… if no luck I’ll be getting a new one but I’ll be refusing to pay for it. I don’t understand why they say label the child’s clothes if they don’t bother to check anyway, completely mind boggling if you ask me and what I don’t get is how it is my fault that the teachers have mixed the items up when I wasn’t there in the first place some people just doesn’t make sense to me lol I done my part by labelling the clothes and returning the other child’s jumper back the next day, I don’t understand what else they want me to do about it😂 i understand it happens but whenever I had this issue in the past it was resolved the next day just crazy

Sharpie in big letters inside items or iron on ones that melt into fabric like my name tag,
OP Primary schools have massive volumes of lost property.
Maybe ask to get some that's not claimed.

Neodymium · 18/09/2024 00:26

This happened once to my son at kindy with shoes. He had brand new shoes and another kid had the same shoes but smaller and old. They sent my son home in the old too small shoes and the other boy home in the new (named) shoes. We did eventually get them back but it took a few weeks.

crumblingschools · 18/09/2024 00:34

It’s for the children to check not the teacher. DS managed to come home with different shoes once, luckily we managed to get his back.

crumblingschools · 18/09/2024 00:36

@Neodymium snap!
