Our school is notoriously bad at communication and we have no idea if school is going to be closed next thurs. Bit late to let us know I feel and kids are off til monday so won't find out til then. Really bad if you have to arrange childcare. A few ppl i have talked to know nothing about any strike

it will depend on how many of your teachers are in the NUT. Teachers not in that union are not allowed to strike, so it's possible that only certain classes will be taken, eg if your child's teacher is in the NUT and is on strike he/she might get the day off but if your other child's deacher isn't in the union he/she will have to go to school, iyswim?

Our school isn't closed afaik.

mrz · 18/04/2008 13:31

In my area schools/heads weren't informed by the LA until after children went home on the Friday before the Spring break so not giving schools the chance to inform parents. Some schools are closing some will just be open for children who's teachers are not in the NUT.

MerlinsBeard · 18/04/2008 13:31

we haven't been told otherwise so assume its a normal day. will try and remember to ask later on

saltire · 18/04/2008 13:31

Well the DSes school haven't mentioned it, but then I am fully expecting a letter next Wednesday.
Not all teachers are in NUT though, so it may not affect them

Psychomum5 · 18/04/2008 13:32

Our school isn't......we had the letter yesterday, and for once I am thrilled with their communication!!!

TheFallenMadonna · 18/04/2008 13:32

Ours is open.

I was rather hoping for ds to get a day off...

Mamazon · 18/04/2008 13:33

OUr school is closed except for year 6.
It seems odd to me that they would open and enitire school for teh sake of 3 classes but still.

then again i find it very annoying that they h ave had 3 weeks of holidays in 4 weeks and now they are having yet another day off.

Lord knows how people who work full time cope.

brightwell · 18/04/2008 13:37

It's still our 1/2 term, so don't know yet.

OrmIrian · 18/04/2008 13:38

Don't know. We're on holiday atm so I suppose we'll find out just before

Blandmum · 18/04/2008 13:40

I'm not in the NUT and I've been told by my union that I should work, but that I shouldn't cover classes that would normally be taught by a teacher in the NUT (if that makes sense)

Blu · 18/04/2008 13:42

What is the strike about?

eeeek...what with the day off for the election on May 1st....can i jpin the NUT even though I am not a teacher? So that i can have a day off on strike to look after DS?

spudmasher · 18/04/2008 13:42

Mamazon, Year six have SATs tests soon, upon which the school will be judged so they are probably making them the priority.
Yes it is annoying that they will be off school for a day, but it is also annoying that teacher's pay will increase by 2.45% when the rate of inflation is currently 4.1%. It is actually a pay cut.
Please support the teachers in this strike. Your children will benefit in the long run.

sitdownpleasegeorge · 18/04/2008 14:07

How will children benefit in the long run ?

Don't get me wrong its none of my business whether they strike or not but are you saying that teachers will become demoralised and take it out on our children or are you saying the teachers will leave the profession in large numbers.

Teachers are not striking for the benefit of children in their care, they are striking due to an issue over their own personal standard of living potentially being decreased.

I fully understand this grievance and can't bear to see blatant attempts to manipulate public support by making it about "our children".

In case you're interested spudmasher, I will not even be getting 2.45% but as I value my job security I understand where my employer is coming from with the lower offer and along with my work colleagues will be accepting it. The economic situation is tough out there, lots of people won't just get a pay cut they will lose their jobs. Do teachers worry over the economy and any associated impact on their own job security ?

twinsetandpearls · 18/04/2008 14:07

We have not been told yet

ButterflyMcQueen · 18/04/2008 14:07

ours is class by class!

Blu · 18/04/2008 14:09

Well, I would support teachers over an inflationary increase.

Sidge · 18/04/2008 14:10

Our school is still on it's spring break, they don't go back until Monday 21st so if they tell us then that they are shut on the 24th I'll be pretty pissed off.

SlightlyMadSweet · 18/04/2008 14:13

Check your local councils website.

Current details for Leicestershire are on the website (but subject to change)

Shit mine are at school. I was kind of hoping for a day off...it is DD3s birthday and would have been a good opportunity to have a day trip (zoo maybe) as most/half/some will still be at school.

DS's school is open as usual

katz · 18/04/2008 14:17

DD1's school is closing - too many staff are NUT members for it to be safe apparently. DD1's teacher isn't an NUT member and will be in she told me this morning. thankfully Thursday is my day off so just have to think of something to do with her now.

spudmasher · 18/04/2008 14:21

We will have to agree to disagree on this sitdown!
To attract good graduates, the pay needs to be in line with the pay of graduates going into the public sector.
That is just one reason. This website might answer your other questions. www.teachers.org.uk
And, yes I do care about my own personal standard of living being decreased, but I also worry about having crap teachers for my children.

paddingtonbear1 · 18/04/2008 14:21

My dd's school is not closing. We got a note confirming this a couple of days ago.

2sugarsagain · 18/04/2008 14:24

Ours is closing. We were really surprised - dds said 'Even when all the other schools were closed because of snow, ours stayed open'.
