Our school is notoriously bad at communication and we have no idea if school is going to be closed next thurs. Bit late to let us know I feel and kids are off til monday so won't find out til then. Really bad if you have to arrange childcare. A few ppl i have talked to know nothing about any strike

not sure actually, must ask when I pick them soon

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 18/04/2008 14:30

We had letter before the 'Easter' holiday started 2 weeks ago saying they hoped to stay open but would confirm on Monday when we go back...

I'd love another day off.

Fimbo · 18/04/2008 14:31

Ds's school is open (first and nursery school) whilst dd's (junior school) is open.

But the junior school makes the hot lunches for the first school, so normally it falls in line with whatever the junior school does as they are unable to offer free school meals.

WigWamBam · 18/04/2008 14:35

Five classes at dd's school are staying home, the other four will be going in.

But there is the possibility of a two day strike on Wednesday/Thursday if the TAs and office staff go out, and if that happens then the school will have to close for the two days.

DaisySteiner · 18/04/2008 15:10

Our school does have teachers in the NUT but apparently they've all chosen to work regardless.

christywhisty · 18/04/2008 20:11

Most of DD's school is open.

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 18/04/2008 20:12

I'm assuming we would have had a letter if they were going to close?

So I think I am right when I say

ours is not closing.

ChipButty · 18/04/2008 20:17

NUT leader for each school does not have to inform Head until 48 hours before strike (re how many teachers will be striking), so it may be late Monday or even Tuesday when some of you hear. If it inconveniences you, then write to your MP and support us, please.

beautifuldays · 18/04/2008 20:18

my dh is in the NUT and they have told him (and other NUT teachers) that they have to inform the head at least 48hrs before they intend to strike. so that would be tuesday morning...

i would be on the lookout for letters home on tuesday night unless you've already been told they will def be open.

SlartyBartFast · 18/04/2008 20:19

wonder if they will ALL stay open?

oh thanks chipB.

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 18/04/2008 20:21

chipbutty - dp is in the NASUWT, so you all have my support anyway.

ChipButty · 18/04/2008 20:24

Thanks. I really don't want to strike but I can't see any other way of getting heard. I know it will be a huge inconvenience for all of the parents out there. xx

katz · 18/04/2008 22:26

although is a small pain school being closed, i totally support the teachers reason for striking, teachers should get more pay.

TooTicky · 18/04/2008 22:40

One class in school, three to stay home.

UnquietDad · 18/04/2008 22:44

Ours isn't closing even though most teachers are NUT - they've chosen not to strike.

However, the following Thursday the school will be closed for the local elections! The head is not very happy about this, apparently.

Rachmumoftwo · 18/04/2008 22:54

DD doesn't go back til Tuesday after 2 weeks and an inset day, and we haven't heard anything. it will be evry short notice by then! They could have posted on the website, imo!

Tinker · 18/04/2008 23:06

Our school isn't closed but classes with NUT teachers won't be on (my eldest's teacher is NUT)

Tinker · 18/04/2008 23:09

My eldest is Year 6 but will still be off.

chopchopbusybusy · 18/04/2008 23:20

DD1s school is 50/50 open - unfortunately for her, she is one of the chosen ones to be in .
DD2s school is completely closed.

ReallyTired · 18/04/2008 23:20

It is quite diliberate. The teachers who are striking want to cause maximum distruption, ie. people have to get the day off at short notice. They want to create maximum havoc and a negative impact to the ecomony.

The school I am working at will be open and so is my son's school. I am not a teacher, and I don't support the strike. In fact the majority of teachers I know are not in favour of a strike.

I think there would be more justification for a support staff strike. Many support staff are paid barely more than the minimum wage. To make matters worst support staff are only paid for term time. Support staff also get severely exploited and increasingly being asked to do teachers' duties. Some teachers put upon support staff unfairly.

WowOoo · 18/04/2008 23:21

Our school not closed. BUT - my dh works in another borough's school and really has only had 3 proper days off since hols. Has so much paperwork and forward planning to do. Fully understand the childcare implications but feel so annoyed at the long hols post. Some teachers work so bloody hard, you could not imagine why the hell they would want to complain about conditions and pay....
Sometimes a teacher can take 2 teachers classes, this was what I often did for striking/absent teachers classes. Hope it all works out for all...

PeachesMcLean · 18/04/2008 23:28

I'm less cross about teachers striking than I am about the school being closed for voting. I do not believe there are no alternative venues our council could use.

ReallyTired · 18/04/2008 23:30

Teachers are not allowed to take 2 classes at once. Imagine the health and safety implications. ALso it would result in 60 kids learning nothing as opposed to 30 kids learning nothing and 30 kids having a lesson.

I think NUT is not doing teachers any favours. A strike will do nothing but alienate the public.

A big problem is all the governant initatives and excessive paperwork. Schools have been extremely stressful and toxic places both for the teachers and the children. I think there needs to be less inferenance on the everyday running of schools from whitehall.

PeachesMcLean · 18/04/2008 23:34

Disagree with strike doing nothing but alienating the public. It's certainly brough the pay situation to my attention, whereas it might not have as a mere news story, and I don't want school teachers to be suffering pay cuts. It's clearly got to a stage where there's no other option.

twinsetandpearls · 18/04/2008 23:35

Ours isn't, it also has not been closed for the whole week I have just kept her off for thinking it was the holiday
