4-5 year olds should know their numbers 1-100 in reception...

don't think so. 1 - 10 I think is the min. Someone will be along soon who knows more than me....

but why do schools only cover the minimum they should be doing a lot more than that. I find our system so mediocre and average it frustrated me. Also reception teacher said they are not focusing on writing at all for that year-this again I find suprising and annoying.Rant rant rant.....

I thought it was 1-20.

There is no chance of DS2 knowing 1-100 by the end of reception.

It is learning through play . Many 4/5 year olds do not see writing as play. In practice many children work at a far higher level and can coutn but not number bond beyond 10. Teachers can't win tbh - either they put too much pressure on too soon or not enough.

My ds is 5.5 & has come home with a sheet from 1-100 he knows them all & is doing really well, they are also doing lots of writing & spelling.

What they need to start knowing about is the relationship between numbers - e.g which numbers are bigger or smaller than other numbers etc. when they have enough of one thing to match with another etc. Simply recognising numbers up to 100 is no indication at all of any understanding about number.

Reception classes focus on this understanding of the relationships by using numbers up to 10 (or 20). Once that is secure, they help children to learn to apply their knowledge to larger numbers.

they have 10 minutes oral mental maths every day

1-100? By rote? I think that's far more mediocre than the amusing description dd gave me the other day of the life cycle of the frog.
Dd and her fellow Receptioners are learning through play so dd can give "change" from the shop for items costing 10p or less.
I honestly don't see what getting her to chant up to 100 is going to do to improve her learning experience.
Ds went through the same Reception class and in Yr 4 is showing an interest in algebra, geometry and can multiply and divide comfortably.
I agree with offering differentiated work for children who are showing an aptitude for maths young, but not all children are ready for meaningful number work 1-100 at that age.

dd2 can give change up to 20p
can order numbers up to 30 forwards and backwards
understands fractions

but prob cant count up to 100

At pre-school it was 1-20 as well so in effect 2 years of 1-20.....I just hope in a big class there are extra activities for those poor children who already know more than 1-10. Crossing my fingers as I am so sceptical and worried ds is not being stretched....I probably just need to calm down and keep teaching my ds stuff at home ...

Saintpeta - they may not be focussing on writing, but they will be doing lots of work on phonics in preparation for confident reading and writing later in the year, as well as lots and lots of opportunities for speaking and listening which feed into writing later on.

SP , has your dc started Reception yet ? The preschool is evidently not literally following the Early Years curriculum but it is unlikely the children who have understood this already would be expected to backtrack. Teachers do baseline assessments on entry to Reception as well as reviewing the FS Goals during the year so any such anomaly should be picked up. Also there is so much more for them to take on board there than at preschool too , so academic advancement is not the only focus.

My DD is 4.8 and can count to 100 and read the numbers too.

do i have a genius then? dd2 counted all her two pence pieces up and told me she had 56p, she was correct

reception children are learning through play, they need to know up to 20 i think by the end of the school year.
