Hi guys,

my son starts reception this sept he’s a summer baby, I was in the middle of sending my son to reception this year and trying to get him tos dart once he’s 5 but council or school didn’t agree. Anyways I think he will be okay just on the emotional side I worry a bit.

he is tiolet trained and I am teaching him how to wipe himself. I was wondering how the toilets would be in school for little kids? He uses a smaller potty on the flush but would it be according to there size? Would they be able to sit on it easily? I am so worried as teachers are not allowed to help them. :(

also does he take packed lunch or does the school provided this? Anyone else has a summer born who started reception at 4? I am just worried about him settling and getting used to 5 days. He goes daycare at the moment 3 days a week.

also am I able to still send him daycare during summer holidays?

This list is definitely ideal, but having had a SEN child, who got there a little later, a lot of it can be worked round, if he's not quite there.

toileting including wiping - try to get them to poo at home, and except there will be skids some days

getting changed into PE clothes and back into uniform - look at ASDA easy on uniform. It's all velcro or elastic if he's not quite there with buttons

hanging his things on a peg - make sure everything has a big hanging loop.

putting shoes/wellies on the right feet - pick easy shoes & put half sticker inside each, line up to get right way

eating independently using cutlery - If he's not there by September, a term of eating sandwiches on pasta day isn't the end of the world

turn taking - focus on this & social/ play skills

holding a crayon/pencil - yes but just colouring in fun, not letter practice

recognising his name written down - would be handy, actually one of the easyer ones

putting sun cream on his face - always just put it on before mine go in & use a wide brim hat

Coat - get one with zelcro over the zip, the velcro will be enough to keep it on.

There will be children in his class born in the first week of September and children with several older siblings who may be seemingly more capable than him. They will be amazing role models to your son @OP. A tiny bit of peer pressure within his form will go a long way. Being kind, helpful and friendly will go a long way too. He'll develop so quickly, you'll barely recognise him by Christmas. And he'll be more tired than you ever thought, even if he's been in full time nursery. Cherish this time, these firsts..., my baby starts Y11 on his 16th birthday in a few weeks. It seems like only 3 weeks ago that he was born.

I can't add much to the excellent advice about but just to say my summer born is just finishing Reception and he has absolutely thrived. It's been quite remarkable. He's small and looks quite young for sure (and is terrible at PE although that's probably genetic...) but socially and academically he's doing brilliantly and is working at a Year 1/2 level according to his teacher.

This is good to hear. Most of Mumsnet seems to think summer borns will suffer at school Blush
