Year 6 SATs this week

So this is a very late starting thread about this week's SATs.

How have your DCs got on with them? And are there any teachers who fancy coming on and letting us know what they think of them compared to previous years...?

My DD has found them okay but she is really bright (not a stealth boast, honest). She's finished a couple of the papers with a lot of time to spare and has gone back over the questions. I said in another thread that we have the 11+ up here though and I think the practice for that can only have helped with the SATs prep, both the content and time management/exam pressure etc.

Much less drama than expected here! They were nervy last week but once they started, DC has been completely unbothered and said they have been “fine”. A teacher said the class as a whole have taken them in their stride.

Under the Standards and Testing Agency Guidance documents, teachers shouldn't be reading the papers.

Information shouldn't be shared here either as the test period is not finished. There maybe children with agreed timetable variations who are yet to sit the tests.

DoNotScrapeMyDataBishes · 15/05/2024 18:52

Talking to the Y6 teacher today (about other stuff I was in school for) and her comment was that one of the maths papers today was the worst she's ever seen (and she's been in Y6 for like forever).

DD2 is sitting hers this year - she seems to be coping OK with them, but I'm not getting much communication from her about any topic other than bloody Pokemon. I think she was annoyed the reading paper lacked adequate amounts of Pokemon for her needs to be honest.

Ah sorry, I assumed that the teachers would have a look at them perhaps after they've collected them in. I remember a lot in the press last year from schools saying how awful the English paper was.

Your poor DD 😂

As above, the content of the tests cannot be discussed online while the test period is ongoing (I know you haven't specifically asked for content information OP, I'm just saying in case anyone was going to reply with "my child told me they found the question about _ really tough" etc). The thread will have to be taken down if any specific content is mentioned. I assume all teachers know this, I was just giving the heads up for parents who might not be aware.

My ds4 is doing SATS this week. He hasn't said anything about the tests but he apparently got a custard cream afterwards and he was very pleased about that Grin. He is looking forward to Friday as they are going to the park in the morning and watching a film in the afternoon. He has learning disabilities and struggles with writing so he gets to sit in a different room with a scribe.

My year 6 DS has had a custard cream and a blue riband bar every day. He's made up!

Same.

Thanks @BoleynMemories13 - I really didn't know that. I suppose I thought someone might just say something like 'they aren't as bad as last year' but I do get your point.

At DD's school they are asking for chocolate cake donations for tomorrow afternoon after they finish. We're taking her out for her favourite Pizza Hut for tea but my DM is having a knee replacement tomorrow so we will also have to fit in visiting her in hospital 😬

DD has been given toast after theirs which she is also v happy about!

I heard the same about the maths paper today whilst I was in school. Really tough apparently.

Bsmirched · 15/05/2024 20:19

I believe today's maths reasoning paper was very wordy and more a test of reading than maths!

Rooroobear · 15/05/2024 20:23

Yeh my ds said the maths reasoning was really hard and apparently the English one on Monday was crazy. Dep head even saying it was the hardest he’s seen for ages

CpOb · 15/05/2024 20:26

One of mine is doing theirs this week.

Not fussed at all about it thankfully as was pretty stressed in the lead up.

Has already been though 11+ and other entrance assessments since September and so once Monday was out of the way has been much more laid back.

So far said all of papers have been fine. Interesting to hear that the maths was hard today.

They're a very strong reader and while exceeding in maths they don't enjoy it. So maybe the extra wordiness helped?! Confused

Rooroobear · 15/05/2024 20:32

My ds is pretty good at maths, said the other one today was fine, just the reasoning

Readinstead · 15/05/2024 20:33

Dgs1 is also taking it in his stride. English (he hates Spag) was better than he expected. He found the reading paper interesting and maths today (his favourite subject) harder than the practice papers.
They sit them in batches, doing work in the hall until their turn. They do the test in their classroom then go to the self-contained Nursery/Reception unit and get to play sports or help out with the younger children. He is loving this but is really looking forward to the cinema trip on Friday!

dawnio1977 · 15/05/2024 20:34

Mine has had bacon/sausage butties at school each morning along with pancakes, syrup, fruit etc. I'm told the teachers serve them before the tests. Nice. Lots of happy kids gorging themselves sillly! :)

spanieleyes · 15/05/2024 20:35

The maths one today was tricky. Not so much the calculations, just that the questions were worded in such a way that the children really didn't know what they were expected to actually do! We have quite a number of EAL children and many were completely lost😥. Hopefully their arithmetic scores will pull up the overall as their actual maths is fantastic!

Spirallingdownwards · 15/05/2024 20:35

All these comments about how hard or easy anonymous kids are finding it are irrelevant of course because there is always a mixed ability. Now if it was my really intelligent child found it hard or my less intelligent child found it easier than expected that gives more context.

Onabench · 15/05/2024 20:36

Are we really being precious about the discussion of year 6 SATS?

DC teacher also said it was a hard maths test today and the reading test wasn't great but that the punctuation and grammar test wasn't too nasty.

Cactus5 · 15/05/2024 20:39

My daughter said there were a couple of tricky spellings and the reading paper was crazy. She just had enough time to finish it, but didn't have time to check all of her answers. She found the maths papers easy. It took her 15 mins to do the arithmetic and 30 mins to do reasoning. She said she did the arithmetic twice to check all of her answers. I just hope they don't get all of the hard questions tomorrow. She is normally working at greater depth.

Saucery · 15/05/2024 20:53

They won’t “get all the hard questions” tomorrow, don’t worry. The papers aren’t designed like that. There may well be questions on topics not covered in today’s Reasoning paper, but as long as they have covered the whole of the curriculum they can only sit there and do their best.

Lancasterel · 15/05/2024 22:19

Mine is mainly sad we’re not planning to reward him in Robux like “all his friends”! It’s becoming a tiring conversation. He may be beginning to wear me down 😂 Tonight, we had a written statement and real tears (which I’m putting down to emotions being all over the place this week).
As for the papers, he was happy after Monday, less positive Tuesday and today… mainly because he’s fed up with them I think, he’s quite able and has done really well in past papers.

That’s a real shame that EAL children were affected in that way :( I teach KS1 and often find the EAL children way ahead in terms of arithmetic, mathematical understanding, manipulating number…. so that seems unfair 😐
