Year 6 SATs this week

So this is a very late starting thread about this week's SATs.

How have your DCs got on with them? And are there any teachers who fancy coming on and letting us know what they think of them compared to previous years...?

My DD has found them okay but she is really bright (not a stealth boast, honest). She's finished a couple of the papers with a lot of time to spare and has gone back over the questions. I said in another thread that we have the 11+ up here though and I think the practice for that can only have helped with the SATs prep, both the content and time management/exam pressure etc.

Well DD was happy with all the papers and said that even today she had time left to go back over her answers.

She did say that yesterday there was an algebra question (hopefully I'm allowed to say that) which her higher maths group had covered but those in the other two year 6 maths groups hadn't come across before.

I think they are back to normal lessons tomorrow, according to DD. I hope she's pleasantly surprised and they have a more relaxing day but this afternoon was spent eating chocolate cake and playing out on the field so she seemed happy enough with that (and all the toast this week)!

My DS seemed to think it was easier than the mock prep he's done. Unfortunately he's been ill this week so he's tired but hopefully it's not made a difference. He said the maths was good and the English papers went well. He's glad it's over though.

We shall see!

Ahhh. Loving all the custard creams, bacon sandwiches and pizza parties.

DD is off into town for McDonalds and bowling today as their post-SATs treat.

My boy is den building today. He seemed supremely unbothered by the whole thing. He just said they were fine when I asked each evening. I think the run up to them is often much harder than the actual SATs week. Onwards and upwards to secondary school.

grammar and SPAG -easy
Maths both days- easy

Reading- a lot to read in the short time and the last, a descriptive question he missed two parts

Dgs was generally unbothered by the tests. Like a pp's daughter, he mentioned an algebra question which they hadn't covered (single form entry and no sets) but from what he said, he seemed to have worked it out. He was a bit sad on Thursday that there wouldn't be any more maths tests because he likes doing them apparantly. For context: on practice tests he has generally passed SPaG (sometimes by a mark or two) , greater depth for reading and borderline gd for maths.
He had a great time at the cinema on Friday but I was gobsmacked that a small popcorn and a small slushie cost £9.85!

That’s a real shame that EAL children were affected in that way :( I teach KS1 and often find the EAL children way ahead in terms of arithmetic, mathematical understanding, manipulating number…. so that seems unfair 😐

Many of our EAL children have readers for precisely this reason.

Lots of my children said they were easy - what they actually meant was they answered all the questions, but knowing how they usually perform on past papers, I suspect that they may not get as many marks as they think!

Dtwins both found the papers easier than the 11+ and didn’t seem remotely bothered by them. I guess that is the advantage of 11+ mocks and exam.

My son in short tests scores 20/20 at maths , grammar. Longer it would be like 48/50. But he doesn't like to read. He reads news and on the computer but never liked to read fiction in particular fantasy. At reading he scores 40/50. Still safely passing but not above expected as he is at grammar and math
