and can read, write and spell them. Just being naughty and comparing to see how dd is doing. She was barely talking a year ago, so just wondering how she compares to her peers.

Dd can read most of them, not sure how many, but she seems to read them straight off when they are put in her box! Her spelling is good if it's phonic, she has a go otherwise. Her best spelling we saw at parents evening was 'Tomato Sauce' which she had written Tmrtusos. Which kind of made sense!

She can write them if she can spell them iyswim!

ZoeC · 28/03/2008 11:29

Dd1 could read them all by the half term of Autumn Term, spelling is not reliable though - she writes loads but spelling is mostly phonic attempts rather than correct spellings, so if the word works phonically she will generally spell it correctly, if it doesn't quite work phonically then she may not.

She is just about the oldest in her year though so I was expecting her to read them quickly tbh, she turned 5 almost as soon as she started Reception year.

yes my dd can, they have to read write and spell the first 100 words ie reception and yr1.

They aim for the to be reading allthe keywords up to end of yr2 by summer of reception yr.

motherinferior · 28/03/2008 11:33

I have absolutely no idea, and am not particularly bothered.

No idea here, as well. I would be very surprised if she could spell them all.

motherinferior · 28/03/2008 11:36

I never knew actually that there were supposed to be 45 key words when DD1 started school a couple of years ago.

Does it matter?

SmugColditz · 28/03/2008 11:37

Oh rezmum, poor children. Have you asked the school quite why they feel the necessity of stealing their childhood like this?

Ds1 can read, he cannot write or spell them. He's 4. It's not a skill he needs just yet.

He did write me a HapE Estr card though

HI sc

she's in an all girls school and they all seem to thrive on it. she is starting to read chapter books on her own and really has a thing for numbers. They work a longer morning then spend over 2hrs every afternoon doing pe or arty stuff, singing

Lucycat · 28/03/2008 11:43

dd can read them, spell some but her writing is all over the place - lefty you see.

mind you they do precious little else at school besides learning their phenomes, digraphs etc.

'reading is so empowering don't you know* quote from dd's reception teacher at the last parents evening god I can't stand the woman.

Fennel · 28/03/2008 11:46

I can see the point of reading, it's a great skill to have, but really can't see why 4-5 year olds should be bothering with spelling instead of having fun.

my nearly 8yo still probably can't spell half those reception keywords, but she reads a lot, for pleasure. which IMO matters far more.

Fridayfeeling · 28/03/2008 11:46

Key words. At 4. Bollocks. Who cares? DS2 makes a wicked paper plane.

Lucycat · 28/03/2008 11:49

I wish they made paper planes at my dd's school, or painted (apart from in the style of Paul Klee when it's 'Arts Week')or got dirty outside or ran round getting knackered.

The Head is destroying the school, another job advert went in the paper today.

francagoestohollywood · 28/03/2008 11:50

ds "knew" the 45 whatever keywords by the end or reception last june (he started in Jan), but had absolutely NO IDEA about what to do with them. He was clueless, and so was I to be honest

CountessDracula · 28/03/2008 11:52

are these the ones they send home in the reading folder?

dd could read them all before xmas
she can spell and write most of them I should think

meemar · 28/03/2008 11:54

agree with fennel. DS1 can read all the words, but he has always show great interest in books and reading and what letters say. I think enjoying reading is the most important thing.

He only started school in January so I don't think the school are expecting him to be able to spell them. As far as writing goes, he can just about write his own name in enormous scrawl and even that isn't legible sometimes

pooka · 28/03/2008 11:55

dd can read/recognise the 25 words in her sound box.
Her writing is less reliable, but she's only been there since January and is 4 and a half. Comes home with heaps of things she's made and is having great fun, which is the most important thing IMO.
I find phonetic spelling really sweet. Her first free written sentence was "mis hav disapird". With a picture of a cat and a couple of mice. So was "mice have disappeared" (she translated for me).
also fond of costoom for costume and carsel for carousel.
Her teacher is lovely and at the parent's evening suggested that dd might enjoy doing her own photo album/scrapbook to get her into writing for a purpose. And she has loved it - annotates each photo she puts in, puts stickers in and draws round the photos.

pooka · 28/03/2008 11:57

They add about 3 or 4 words a week so that the learning is broken down into little chunks. ditto the letter sounds, 3 a week there.
