and can read, write and spell them. Just being naughty and comparing to see how dd is doing. She was barely talking a year ago, so just wondering how she compares to her peers.

Does it matter? Who cares how their children compare to their peers? It will make nowt difference when they're adults whether they read at 4 or 7.

FWIW though, as you asked, DS is way beyond that and is reading the OED at bedtime and editing the spectator in his spare time

Fridayfeeling · 28/03/2008 11:59

On the paper plane front - did you know there are websites that show you how to make them. With videos. Awesome.

Just far too much emphasis on these key words, such a shame for the kids. THE KIDS even know how many words all the others in their class know. I hate to talk about it with my DS's - this comes from the school not me. My DS1 was criticising handwriting on Christmas cards last year, that made me sick.

LadyMuck · 28/03/2008 12:00

Ds2 still struggling to read them, let alone write or spell them. Ds1 could do them all by the end of the Christmas term. By the middle of Year 2 you cannot tell which children knew them by Christmas and which knew them later.

I have to say that it can be a bit of a shock when you realise that your PFB, once "top of the class" is being overtaken by other children. It does leave me rather more relaxed about ds2 however.

pooka · 28/03/2008 12:04

dd has not got the foggiest how other children are doing. It's completely off her radar. And if I ask her what she did at school when I pick her up, all she talks about is the painting, sticking, colouring and playtime. Which is exactly as it should be.

DS is in Yr 2 now and is an August birthday.

When in was in Reception he wasn't interested in the words till around the Jan/Feb. Was only getting those books without words which didn't help. Some children were getting the words and some weren't. One day he just refused to go home without a dinosaur (the words were on a sheet of paper and written inside a dinosaur outline). He def didn't know them all by the end of the year.

Only started getting spellings around Easter in Yr 1.

Is now reading very well - Stge 7 ORT which is towards the lower end of what would be expected but he is enjoying it all.

i did not mean to start debate. It is just i dont get to speak to other mums and am curious how others are doing and if dd is catching up. TBH she hates writing (is all over the place), and is not good at other things, but has a fab imagination, loves school and is generally a happy child, (which is all i can ask for). I did not mean to come across as a pushy mum!!!

I have no idea what they are and no intention of finding out
thank goodness dd1 goes to a sensible school that allows four year olds to be four year old and PLAY

coppertop · 28/03/2008 13:07

No idea whatsoever. All I know is that ds2's teacher is happy with his progress and so am I.

mrz · 28/03/2008 17:11

Schools shouldn't be teaching the 45 words any longer as they have been scrapped in the review of the Primary curriculum and replaced by new guidance.

aintnomountainhighenough · 28/03/2008 17:17

mrz I thought that you had a link to that on another post. Is is definitely something that they should be doing now or is optional now but must be done from September? Also do they have to do it in the order in the document (sounds that is)?

mimsum · 28/03/2008 17:21

dd's class doesn't 'do' key words - what's the point fgs - neither of my boys knew 45 key words by the end of reception and even if they had it would have been no use to them whatsoever - they did however really enjoy listening to stories, exploring books and playing, playing, playing

ds2's now in y3, he's just 8 and has the reading and comprehension levels of a 13 year old - ds1 is just 11 and in y6 and has a scholarship to a highly selective secondary school with absolutely no tutoring whatsoever

so even though i have no idea whether or not dd knows these silly key words I don't really care! somehow I think she'll be flying academically when it starts to matter - at the moment she's having a ball at school

edam · 28/03/2008 17:37

ds's school don't expect them to memorise a set number of key words (or, if they do, I've missed the relevant letter). He seems to be doing fine without any lists so I'm happy.

mrz · 28/03/2008 19:03

No the document isn't statutory (but neither was the old version or the literacy hour) it has been around for quite some time and is what the government recommend. Sounds can be taught in any order but the s,a,t,p,i,n order of most phonics schemes is designed to allow children to read and write words once the first six sounds have been taught ... sat, it, in, pan, ant, tap pin...

Posey · 28/03/2008 19:51

Ds can read them, but not sure about spelling them. Probably very phonetically.

Colditz - had to smile at your ds's spelling of Easter. Ds spelt it Esd

bluenosesaint · 28/03/2008 23:34

yes

Flum · 28/03/2008 23:35

Blimey. what are the set words?

My ds still couldn't halfway through year 1. By the first week in year 2 he was a free reader. It's not a linear progression for some of them - I wouldn't worry!

imaginaryfriend · 31/03/2008 09:36

seeker ...

My dd's never been given these 45 words. She's in Reception. What are they?

Flame · 31/03/2008 09:41

DD can read about 20, can spell some of em.

Thankfully they have stopped the f*cking awful system of putting the names on the board of those who know them all

I have no issue with "x has worked well this week" but that was different and mean.

throckenholt · 31/03/2008 09:42

no. Can probably read many of them (not totally sure which 45 they are though !?) - write some, spell - probably not !

tiredemma · 31/03/2008 09:43

Not yet no, he has only just got his head around reading.

SoupDragon · 31/03/2008 09:43

I am utterly delighted that they don't do these words at all at DSs school.

brimfull · 31/03/2008 09:43

what 45 words?

Hulababy · 31/03/2008 09:44

They are for READING only; not spelling.

Actually according to another thred these 45 words have now been replaced with another system.
