Recommendations for books to get a reluctant 10 year old into reading

She's a little behind and says that 'the text is to fancy to read,' which makes me think maybe something with some pictures might help break things up a bit?
I'm not mum here - just the fun auntie that likes to promote reading. My kids library is too old fashioned to catch her interest though 😅 What Katy Did, Famous Five, Chronicals of Narnia etc. Tried Harry Potter and she thinks that's too hard.

How about a non-fiction book? Mine loved Kay’s Anatomy by Adam Kay. It’s broken down into short sections and is funny so they wanted to keep reading.

thepresureofausername · 09/11/2023 21:07

The outsiders by SE Hinton

bookworm14 · 09/11/2023 21:10

She might like the Lottie Brooks series by Katie Kirby. They’re for the 9-12 age group - very funny and plenty of pictures.

Robinbuildsbears · 09/11/2023 21:12

What about Jacqueline Wilson? She wrote a modern adaptation of What Katy Did a few years ago, that might be worth a try?

DGPP · 09/11/2023 21:14

Jacquline Wilson got my reluctant 10 year old into reading. Not all of them are suitable so check which ones would suit her age.

paranoidmumdroid1 · 09/11/2023 21:15

Diary of a Wimpy Kid series

Myddle · 09/11/2023 21:16

Graphic novels? My 9 year old & her friends love them. There's loads out there, but bunny v monkey, catkid, dog man have all been popular. The phoenix magazine went down well too if they like that kind of thing. Do struggle to get her to read things that are more serious, but I think any reading better than nothing!

Icecreamandapplepie · 09/11/2023 21:17

Treehouse series

Has she read the Tom Gates books? They are easy to read with fun illustrations- but nice and chunky which really builds confidence.

@thepresureofausername The Outsiders is a great book but not for a 10 year old.
@GirlWithAChakrem
As said Jacqueline Wilson is good. Maybe start with ones like The Lottie Project, Sleepovers, The Suitcase Kid, Bed and Breakfast Star.
Wimpy Kid, Tom Gates, Dork Diaries are all fairly easy to read.
There are graphic novel versions of The Babysitter's Club which are lovely.

The tree house series by Andy Griffiths
Tom Gates
Raina Telgemeier does great graphic novels
Aoife dooley has a couple of good graphic novels

Thecatinthehatwalkedintoabar · 09/11/2023 21:25

The outsiders is one of my all time favourite books..but agree with pp that 10 is too young

thepresureofausername · 09/11/2023 21:26

The Outsiders is a great book for 10 year olds (I teach 10 year olds)

Curlewwoohoo · 09/11/2023 21:28

13 storey treehouse series by Tom Gates
Diary of a wimpy kid
Possibly a bit young, but Daisy and the trouble with... By Kes Grey
Kays anatomy for non-fiction maybe

Is there a possibility that she might be dyslexic?

Orangebadger · 09/11/2023 21:29

Tom Gates
Diary of a wimpy kid
Lottie books
Tree house series

Graphic funny novels.
Might be a bit young for her but my 10 yr old still enjoys a read of dogman and captain underpants every now and again. Very silly!

GirlWithAChakrem · 09/11/2023 21:30

Ohh im glad Jacqueline Wilson is still popular! That's a good idea - I might have a look in the charity shops on Saturday while I'm out. At least I'll recognise those.

@thepresureofausername do 10 year olds understand violent gang rivalry in 1960s Oklahoma?
Great book. Not for a reluctant reader though.

PhantomErik · 09/11/2023 21:34

My DS is 11 now & is reading Tom Fletcher's books, his favourite is The Christmasaurus but he's really enjoyed all of them. Danger Gang is great fun.

18 months ago he hated reading so I bought the Dog Man books & they made such a difference so definitely recommend them.

Danascully2 · 09/11/2023 21:34

If she likes cute animals then maybe the Holly Webb animal books? One of mine likes them - I found them a bit samey once we'd read one but I would have liked them when I was young.
I have done exactly that and got various things from charity shops and just let them pick what they like. libraries are often selling books off very cheaply. Worst witch? Much easier to read than Harry Potter.

sprigatito · 09/11/2023 21:38

The Silver Crown

thepresureofausername · 09/11/2023 21:43

@Needmorelego I've found it great to get reluctant readers into reading. Maybe it's because they know it's written by a teenager? Maybe it's because it's so gripping? Maybe it's because it unlocks something inside them and makes them feel things in a way reading never has for them before?

LittleMonks11 · 09/11/2023 21:46

Lottie Brooks series!
