Recommendations for books to get a reluctant 10 year old into reading

She's a little behind and says that 'the text is to fancy to read,' which makes me think maybe something with some pictures might help break things up a bit?
I'm not mum here - just the fun auntie that likes to promote reading. My kids library is too old fashioned to catch her interest though 😅 What Katy Did, Famous Five, Chronicals of Narnia etc. Tried Harry Potter and she thinks that's too hard.

Has she read the Tom Gates books? They are easy to read with fun illustrations- but nice and chunky which really builds confidence.

Agreed. I go into our local school to listen to children read. I tend (understandably!) to be given all the reluctant readers who are a bit behind. The year 5 and 6s (both boys and girls) all love the Tom Gates books - they are funny and the way the text is laid out makes it appear less dense and scary-looking. There are plenty of them too if they prove to be a winner!
Another regular favourite is The Bad Guys series.

My reluctant 9yo also really enjoyed the babysitter club graphic novels.

Amelia fang and rainbow grey might be good ones

I immediately thought of the treehouse books. Lots of pictures and no dense text. They are funny too.

Amelia Fang
Isadora Moon
Witch Wars

Agree with a PP’s suggestion of The Worst Witch - the reading level is easy but they are highly entertaining!
The same can also be said for David Walliams books.

For harry potter maybe alternate lines or pages.
Or some audio books.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Tom Gates

Both loved by my kids at this age - really accessible and fun with cartoon illustration throughout but still feel like a chapter book

Reading at same time as listening to the audiobook was a game changer for us.
