What did your Primary school do for Year 6 leavers?

I keep seeing lots of social media posts of very outlandish events for year 6 leavers. Proms, parties on their last day etc
My DC aren't in year 6 yet but from what I Dan tell their school didn't do very much at all.
Just wondering what the norm is?

The social events like these are often organised and paid for by parents and have nothing to do with the school.

WunWun · 21/07/2023 20:31

They had a party for 90 mins after school with a water fight and pizza.

Toffeebythesea · 21/07/2023 20:33

To clarify I was including events organised by parents in my question. I'm thinking perhaps I will offer to organise something for my DC year group when they are in Year 6

Pizza party and rounders match against parents after the Yr 6 play last week. Then a Leavers’ Assembly and disco on their last day. The disco was organised by parents though. Leavers hoodies too, and their teacher made them year books. All been very emotional!

Toffeebythesea · 21/07/2023 20:34

A water fight and pizza sounds ideal

We are at a small village school not affluent area just ordinary- we have leavers hoodies funded by PTFA , a school play , a local service for the leavers from all schools in the area at the Abbey , a school disco ( kids encouraged to dress up so photos look fancy but we pay £4.50 for food and PTFA does the rest) and a local artist comes in to do a workshop where they create something together , then finally a leavers assembly where everyone cries buckets ...
It's quite a lot now I have typed it no wonder I was so emotional and drained last year!

Year 6 production. Hoodies (paid for by parents) given out after SATs. Leavers' Assembly including a presentation book (paid for by PTA). Teacher made Year Book (paper and card supplied by school).

Comedycook · 21/07/2023 20:44

Graduation ceremony. Bbq and disco afterwards

SpecialOnes · 21/07/2023 20:46

Y6 production at school.

Hoodies organised by parents.

End of year disco - Y6 free attendance.

Prom organised by parents

One of our awesome PTA mums who happily did so much for all dc throughout, organised a fab bash with a silent disco, photo booths, sweets, hot dogs. It was blooming awesome.

Rockbird · 21/07/2023 20:48

Our class rep arranged the most awesome party last night. Music, food, outdoor games, award ceremony the lot. The kids had a blast.

Spud90 · 21/07/2023 20:49

We had a leavers assembly, photobook and leavers hoodie then prom at a local venue/lodge. All arranged by school. They had music playing at pick up(green day time of your life) and the kids made a human tunnel and were cheering the year 6s. It was great and very emotional.

IhearyouClemFandango · 21/07/2023 20:50

A day at a PGL activity centre, show for parents, leavers hoodie and paintball session

DappledThings · 21/07/2023 20:51

School play, a leaver's assembly, a low-key party in the local cricket club.

Probably hoodies, not sure. I'm on the PFA but only.got younger children. If there are hoodies the PFA doesn't fund them.

I hope it stays low-key for at least another 6 years till DC2 is done. The idea of a prom for year 11 or 13 is still OTT to me, let alone for year 6.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 21/07/2023 20:59

My school did hoodies, a Prom, a leavers church ceremony (CoE school), leavers assembly, leavers lunch and a water fight.

Topbird29 · 21/07/2023 21:00

We had leavers hoodie- but got them in fe so could be worn a lot longer than the 2 weeks some schools have. Then some parents organised a leavers party (early July as think that is when venue was available). Think they got snacks there, parents paid the costs and leftover funds paid for some teacher presents. This week was a school trip on Monday, leavers lunch on Tuesday, shirt signing Wednesday, a water fight at school on Thursday and last thing today the teachers and staff from all years formed a guard of honour as year 6 walked out of class onto the playground.
I think my ds found it all a bit too much truth be told!

Whodar · 21/07/2023 21:01

Don’t have year 6 age kids yet but always think the hoodies thing sounds like a waste of money that the kids don’t care about (and will grow out of size wise really quickly).

Disco/water fight/party/rounders/pizza sounds excellent.

Mumwithbaggage · 21/07/2023 21:16

Whodar my 27yo still wears her Y6 Leavers hoodie to bed.

UrsulaBelle · 21/07/2023 21:27

When I was leaving primary school in the dark ages, we just sang
’One more day to go,
One more day of sorrow,
One more day in this old dump,
And we’ll be home tomorrow!’

I do remember being given an abridged version of a classic book, maybe The Secret Garden?

For my DS3, his school did a leavers’ assembly. They had been on a residential after SATs.

Parents organised and paid for leavers’ hoodies which they were allowed to wear to school after SATs. On the last day parents organised a Routemaster red double decker to pick them up from school and take them to a local adventure playground where parents met them and we had a bring and share picnic.

What did your Primary school do for Year 6 leavers?

Worn to death here too!

Our school has no PTA. School organised disco , contribution from parents. School organised and paid for leavers hoodie. Leavers assembly with performances and gift presentation. Photo autograph book paid for by school. Residential trip earlier in year.

MumSi87 · 21/07/2023 21:39

We have had after school disco, concerts, plays, assemblies and today the whole school lined the exit and applauded the year as they left for the last time. We also had record of achievements, gifts, hoodies and soo many photos from the school.
I've been in tears all week

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 21/07/2023 21:43

A visit to the local park for ice cream, rented out local bowling alley for a couple games of bowling then back to school for fish and chips from the chippy round the corner then a rounders and cricket game. All paid for with profits from their y6 entrepreneur project they've worked on this year.

UsingChangeofName · 21/07/2023 22:02

They had a party for 90 mins after school with a water fight and pizza.

This was the sort of thing mine did too.
The Yr6s did do a big 'production' each year.
They also had a long Leavers assembly - it changed slightly as dc1 had a different HT from dcs 2 and 3 then all spilled out into the playground where they all went round with little 'autograph books (just notebooks they have brought in from home) and got messages and took photos with friends for a while.

I'm very glad there was no pressure to join things designed for adults or much older young people, and no expense such as hoodies.

FawnFrenchieMum · 21/07/2023 22:18

Leavers show, leaver party (school disco with pizza, not a prom!), they play football against the teachers to win a cup, last youth group is at a trampoline park.

We also have leavers hoodies, these were given out just before May half term and could be worn as uniform for the last six weeks. DD has lived in hers pretty much every day since she got it.
