What did your Primary school do for Year 6 leavers?

I keep seeing lots of social media posts of very outlandish events for year 6 leavers. Proms, parties on their last day etc
My DC aren't in year 6 yet but from what I Dan tell their school didn't do very much at all.
Just wondering what the norm is?

P7 here but it's pretty much the same as Y6.

They had a disco with pizzas in the last week (at night)
A leavers show (a play the kids were in)
A leavers assembly where awards were given out and they were piped in and out

Our year 6s can wear their leaver hoodies for the whole of year 6 as part of their uniform. They had a trip out to the cinema and bowling with money they had raised through after school sales to celebrate the end of primary with their friends. They also had a “graduation evening”, with personal statements of each child given by their teacher and some special awards handed out. The evening included parents and siblings and the school chef made everyone a lovely meal, this was followed by some singing and a bit of a party at the end.

Dd - (and plenty of years before her) had a party in a wood/ fields near the school there was iirc a burger van and a sort of disco, a tug of war, cake etc, and they ran about in thr field/ woods. They got hoodies and festival style wristbands. Parents could go and take own picnic/alcohol etc
There were covid restrictions when DS was in year 6 so there wasn't a party but they got an afternoon out at a waterpark which I think he probably enjoyed more than a a

arghtriffid · 21/07/2023 22:55

Hoodie
Production
Trip to Longleat - contribution by parents plus PTA contribution
Disco, activities with food - school funded.
Assembly long and curated
Shirt sign and yearbook
Prom - parents, separate venue
Clapping on leaving

I am amazed by how much this has changed from my eldest where it was just leavers' assembly!

A weekend residential. (Arranged by the school)
A Y6 play with drinks and nibbles.
Teachers v pupils Netball match.
Leavers hoodies.
Year book.
Then on the last day there was a church service followed by a BBQ with ice cream van which one of the parents kindly hosted as they have a pool.

If your school doesn’t currently do all this sh*t don’t ever consider starting it. Because each subsequent year it’ll get bigger and more unmanageable but no one will want to be the year that refuses to participate in the activities. The school will wash its hands off it, parents will argue and fight over WhatsApp. —signed Y6 class rep. (Never again!)

There's a y6 production and School do a leavers assembly and a lovely bubble parade through the school where all the staff and younger years come out to see them off.
There is a y6 disco which is funded by the PTA but supervised by school staff and leavers hoodies are partly subsidised by the pta to bring the price down for parents.

In our school, hoodies were purchased at Easter and could be worn throughout the summer term as uniform.

We had a Leavers show last week, which was a dramatisation of a book they've covered this year and it was scripted / performed by the kids.

At the start of the week, we had a Leavers assembly where yearbooks were given out, and the kids were given autograph books to fill up throughout the course of the week. In the assembly, the focus was on the children and what they've all achieved as individuals and as a group. Not a dry eye in the house.

Tonight we had a y6 party in the local sports club which was organised by parents and teachers came along too.

All really good fun ... and one exhausted DD!

Thanks for the heads up. Maybe I won't volunteer then 😂

No prom or limos here. We hired a local football club for the evening and had a disco / inflatable assault course / Photo Booth to entertain the kids. Each parent chipped in £20 towards the cost and brought a plate of food for a sharing buffet.
At school, they had an end of term trip to a local leisure park last week.

Don’t have year 6 age kids yet but always think the hoodies thing sounds like a waste of money that the kids don’t care about (and will grow out of size wise really quickly).

Disco/water fight/party/rounders/pizza sounds excellent.

My older kids wore their hoodies with pride until they outgrew them halfway through year 8.
My Yr6 DC has worn theirs enough since they were handed out that we've already had excellent value for money.

WotNoUserName · 21/07/2023 23:57

The year my DTs were in year 6 the school and/or the PTA organised nothing. Parents were fuming, there were sad faces in the local paper.

Eventually some hoodies appeared. They ordered them all in the same size, we didn't get a choice. So most of the kids didn't wear them as they didn't fit - they were for age 11, but not baggy. Mine outgrew them over the summer as they had a huge growth spurt.

I wasn't one of the fuming parents btw. Grin

Rycbar · 22/07/2023 00:16

We do a leavers assembly where the children sing and have certificates, watch a slideshow etc and then the PTA put on a party of them in the evening!

Don’t do it! Unless you’re a SAHM twiddling your thumbs at home. Offt the stories I could tell…but I’d out myself for sure if I did!

If it was down to me I’d stick with hoodies, maybe the yearbook, the party after the leavers prize giving and the rest is just unnecessary and expensive!

VerveClique · 22/07/2023 07:52

Haven't RTFT but I can assure you that the DCs LOVE their hoodies and that they get well worn for a couple of years afterwards.

Whodar · 22/07/2023 07:57

timefornewme2023 · 21/07/2023 21:32

Worn to death here too!

Ahhh fair enough!

I stand corrected!

restie · 22/07/2023 08:29

My kid isn't in y6 yet, but i know some if the mums.... The kids had a production, a disco, a buffet, a residential, leavers assembly, a parade of honour when individually walking our from school on last day... They also had year book, and hoodie
The parents organised a separate bbq and disco party too.

oldoldieoldieold · 22/07/2023 08:36

We had a brilliant party organised by parents, the school did a bbq after sats then pizza this week. Parents / PTA have also funded photo books.

I'm sad that we don't have a leavers hoodie. It's not done at our school as we live in a really mixed area where there would be a fairly big minority of kids whose parents could not afford the cost of one. I totally understand and accept that, but I'll be a little envious when we see all the kids on our holiday wearing their lovely hoodies 🙁

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 22/07/2023 08:40

Yr 6 show.
hoodies which we paid for
leavers assembly
leavers book made by teachers paid for by PTA
Party/disco with fish and chips that the children raise money for through the year with cake sales etc

DinosaurOfFire · 22/07/2023 11:54

Our school had:

Year 6 hoodies which were also uniform for the year
A year 6 prom and awards evening, the kids wore party dresses/ suits and ate pizza, and had a little gift bag with photobooks for signing/ sweets/ keepsakes
A leavers assembly where they all performed for the school and parents
An end of year trip
And a chill out day on the last day signing their uniform

The prom was all organised and paid for by the parents of the year 6s, and held in the school hall, school contributed the pizzas and each parent contributed £10 each (small single intake school).

TheRasmusRutilans · 22/07/2023 12:28

When my son was in YR6

Leavers Hoodies (organised by one of the parents £15 each)

Leavers party at a local place/ hall (organised by some parents i think it was £10 each)

Leavers school assembly where each child said what they wanted to become also there was a projector screen that showed pictures they took of each yr6 child from nursery all the way up to yr6 with class trip pictures etc

Leavers Mass (catholic school)
A special lunch

year6isout · 22/07/2023 12:39

Ours was ridiculous, included-

Trip to Thorpe park
Trip to go ape
Yearbook
Leavers hoodies
Leavers fayre
Year 6 play
Leavers assembly which included another performance
Camp out ran by parents which was a disaster
Camp in - not overnight organised by school

Think that there might be a couple more things too. Some parents had too much time on their hands and were way too involved(controlling).

I'm venting as obviously wouldn't express in real life

year6isout · 22/07/2023 12:42

Oh and a few of the parents were really arsey to the (working) parent who put together the yearbook as there weren't enough lovely photos of their child.

So glad to be out of it! Also highly identifying post Grin

Last year ds had a leavers hoodie (which he still wears), leavers service and at the end of sports day they all linked arms and walked down the track while the music (I think it was from chariots of fire) played on the speaker. They used to do more (school play, leavers barbeque and class photo) but stopped because of covid and haven't started them back up again. This year some of the parents organised a disco in the school hall.
