How often does your child's teacher listen to them read in ks2?

Just that, wondering if our school is 'normal' with once per week. DS is an average reader. Thanks

In KS2 I’d say once is totally normal.

ladykale · 18/06/2023 19:47

Once or twice per week is normal I think!

How often do you listen to your child read? I think the key is to read with them daily yourself

Treasureboxkey · 18/06/2023 19:50

Perfectly normal.
They will have a daily reading session that has a focus on all of the comprehension aspects of reading but this is done in groups or a class.

.1-1 reading is usually done by TAs. Listening to 30 children read takes a long time so there isn't much capacity for more than once a week.

My son is now year 7 but by the time he left primary, he was only heard reading once or twice maximum per term to assess whether he moved up. I would sometimes ask for them to listen to him read if I thought the books were too easy. His elder sisters were heard regularly but I have a large age gap between all of them.

Summerishereagain · 18/06/2023 19:52

Teacher, once a term. TA, usually weekly. I think it’s parents job to listen daily.

Copasetic · 18/06/2023 19:54

The focus was on me to read with him because he was a good reader and focus was only on those that needed it.

calimali · 18/06/2023 19:57

What do the other 29 kids in class do when the teacher is listening to them read? Realistically how often can they do it. Say, 10 minutes per child, that's 5 hours to listen to the whole class, pretty much one school day.

It is absolutely a parent's job to listen to their child rad, and as often as possible.

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 18/06/2023 20:00

Teacher reading with them once a week in KS2 is loads!

I work in Y3 (TA) and the teacher I work with can't hear them nearly as often as that. I have a couple of children I try and hear daily, others I hear twice a week, another group once a week, another group once a fortnight, and the most confident readers twice a half term. I have a class list in order of who the teacher read with least recently, so that when she has time to read with someone I can give her someone from the top of the list. Obviously I can hear them more easily than she can - I can take them out of certain lessons, whereas she can only really hear them first thing in the morning (if I'm supervising the rest - they're not independent enough for us to both hear readers), during assembly (but only twice a week, and only if I go into assembly instead of her) and very occationally during afternoon lessons once they're getting on with their work. Some children she's only heard once or twice this year.

However, we have daily whole class guided reading, and the children read out loud during that, so she will hear them regularly through that.

Never
Y4

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 18/06/2023 20:02

Oh and a lot of the reading goes out of the window in summer 2! We have 4 trips this half term, plus sports day, transition, a nature project, end of term stuff, assessments, etc.

Please read with your kids at home! I know it can be hard to fit in sometimes, but trust me, it's easier than fitting 32 in during a school day/week!

BettyOBarley · 18/06/2023 20:03

Yr4 and DD has never mentioned the teacher hearing them read. They just read to themselves in class.

ToastedSandwichLover · 18/06/2023 20:08

The teacher never. TA once a fortnight if we're lucky. Sometimes DD goes 3 or 4 weeks without being heard due to staffing issues.

In KS1 the teacher listened once per half term, TA once a week.

MsJuniper · 18/06/2023 20:09

I teach year 3 and it isn't possible to have dedicated reading aloud time for each child. I listen to the lowest 20% once a week but even that can be a challenge. We have reading volunteers who read with a few targeted children each week and TAs who work on interventions.

With the others I make sure I get them to read from the board so I hear their prosody - even just a lesson question or short phrase gives me an idea of their fluency.

We also use Accelerated Reader to check for comprehension and reading level.

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 18/06/2023 20:13

Accelerated reader scheme at my school. Children in KS2 have a TA listen to them twice a week. They take the quizzes online when they finish a book and show the result to a staff member. If they get less than 70% they have to re read the book

bluesky45 · 18/06/2023 20:18

My ds is in reception and he's certainly not been heard read since before Easter. Possibly 5 times this year. He is an able reader but he's only 5. I think his teachers are happy for me to do it as I'm also a teacher and it's one less for them to do. He also has to go through all the books because there are only one or 2 for each phonic sound he's learning so it's not really needed to assess if he can move up or not. I would certainly like them to do a bit more though. I'd be happy with once per week now, never mind in ks2.

sittingonacornflake · 18/06/2023 20:24

Possibly a stupid question but how do you all know the answer to this? Do your children tell or does the school? I've no idea if anyone listens to my DS read!

It’s often stamped in the reading diary.

My kids were heard weekly or every other week in KS2 but usually as part of group reading rather than 1:1. I heard them read every day at home-I think that was v much my job.

sittingonacornflake · 18/06/2023 20:38

@Shinyandnew1 that would make sense. Thanks. Nothing is ever put in DS's diary other than my daily entries. Perhaps I'll ask about it as I'd quite like to know!

Smartiepants79 · 18/06/2023 20:41

Year group? Once or twice a week is normal for a child who is reading ok for his age. There’s just no time for more than this.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 18/06/2023 20:46

I teach key stage 1 year 1 and we do three reads a week in groups of up to six with the same book and send it home on Fridays. It is part of a scheme.

wineandsunshine · 18/06/2023 20:55

I teach Y5 and 'try' to hear the lowest 20% daily.....this is obviously tricky!

We do have support staff who listen to readers weekly plus the Guided Reading groups or interventions.

We use reading records at school and have a weekly incentive for getting this signed etc. It's a bit hit and Miss with some children who regularly lose their book!

SpringIntoChaos · 18/06/2023 21:22

Lowest 20% I read 1:1 with once a week, my TA reads with them once a week. There's no time in my day for any more than this (I hear my readers during assembly time each day, a couple at a time, so they all get a turn). I only have a TA for 6 hours a week (2 full mornings and a 35 minute slot on a Friday afternoon).

We have a 40 minute daily while class 'guided reading' lesson (that's every day) where I teach reading skills and all the children read the same text. This won't be in their reading diary though, as it's a daily lesson, not 1:1 reading. However I do listen to each group once a week within that lesson. Reading is very well planned and taught in school...I wish I could say that all parents understood the importance of reading with their child at home though 🤷‍♀️ Most of my class never have any parental comments in their reading diary and don't read at home...I know this as they tell me that 'mummy was too tired' or 'daddy was out' or whatever. They don't know their book and can't tell me anything about it...so sad 😢

Little Wandle? 🤣

Summer1912 · 18/06/2023 21:31

Y2 i dont think teacher has this year. Possibly Ta 3 times, one of the relatives quite often though
my eldest virtually never.

LizzieBet14 · 18/06/2023 22:42

I teach Year 4 and I listen to 5 children a day in my lunch hour - there's no other time during the day. My TA works 3 days a week and works with intervention groups so isn't actually in class.
