School uniform: How many?

Hello,

We will be new to school this September and I have no idea how many clothes to get.

I have a boy, how many polo shirts, jumpers, trousers etc he will need. I would think one new for each day of the week?

Also, I really like the logo clothes, would it be nice if I can afford it when I calculate the end bill to get it all tops with logo.

Lastly, they have a school jacket again with logo, I quite like it, are they good jackets anyone who has purchased one before?

I have 3 sets. So I guess it's up to you how often you want to wash during the week, or how many you can afford

StaySpicy · 29/04/2023 23:08

I'll probably get 3 polo shirts, especially as they wear PE kit on their PE days. Two jumpers (one with logo for a kind of 'best', maybe, and one supermarket one). Probably two trousers, especially with PE kit as above. Then just PE kit.

He's only 4 so not sweating loads yet! I'll have to see how dirty he gets before I consider another jumper or shirt.

TheApplianceofScience · 29/04/2023 23:09

One on.

One off.

One in the wash.

Thenakedwineglass · 29/04/2023 23:12

We have 4 x pants and (logo) jumpers, 1 x pe kit (logo jumper and polo) and then about 8 plain white polos. Was mainly so didn’t have to be worrying about washing midweek but he gets surprisingly filthy nearly every day ! Mud / dirt / paint / flour - you name it ! They have mini forest school they’re in most days at our school plus lots of practical and creative stuff which gets them messy

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 29/04/2023 23:13

What's your schedule like?

DH and I both work full time and in reception there wasn't much opportunity to rewear clothes because everything came home mucky, the polo shirts were white and came home covered in black whiteboard marker or lunch most days . So we had 5 of everything so we knew if there was no washing done till the weekend it would be fine.

LittleBearPad · 29/04/2023 23:14

Depends whether you have time to wash it mid week. If you do, you’ll need less

AssertiveGertrude · 29/04/2023 23:14

Get one logo polo and two plain as the will have their jumpers on anyway

id get the school jacket

you don’t need a uniform for each day - mine get a fresh uniform each day and I’ve three sets of uniform for each child

TheGriffle · 29/04/2023 23:17

More polo shirts than you think you need unless my dd is just spectacularly good at getting every single top dirty every day. If it’s not her lunch down her front it’s paint or pen or muck!

I have about 15 on the go and at the end of last term glass to throw at least 5 away that we’re beyond saving.

jumpers - 3-5
trousers/shorts - 3-5 of each
Pe tops/pe shorts - 5 of each

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 29/04/2023 23:19

Mine have a clean uniform for each day as they come home filthy and i dont want to do washing mid week. Since they wear PE kit one day a week they have

4 polo tops (asda)
4 trousers (sainsburys)
PE kit (jogging bottoms, white top and black hoodie)
4 logo school Jumpers

Very similar here but PE was twice a week so two sets required, and they changed in and out of it at school so also needed uniform on those days. Polo shirts and trousers / skirts from Tesco and branded jumpers / cardigans from the school outfitters.

We are in our first year post uniform and it's bliss.

Jules912 · 30/04/2023 09:16

I get clean for each day as don't always have time to wash during the week and they come home filthy ( as others have said check they won't be wearing PE kit 2 days before you buy). I tend to also get one extra pair of trousers/top in reception as mine both still had the odd accident or managed to tip the water table over them etc.
Don't bother with logo stuff if it's not compulsory, it's expensive and will get wrecked before the term is out. Stuff also goes missing, though I find it usually turns up again if named.

Ionacat · 30/04/2023 09:59

We didn’t bother with the school jacket. I just got the one which did for in and out of school and was reasonably distinctive so that DD could pick hers out when they inevitably end up on the floor rather than on their peg!
We have 5 sets because I sometimes don’t have time to wash in the week. We have a mix of logoed and non-logoed.

FMW · 30/04/2023 10:23

Depends on the child. Messy DC here so uniform came home dirty every day. We have enough of each for every day of the week for that reason. School coat here is by Fruit of the Loom which we think is good - coats have lasted a full academic year.

premiumknickers · 30/04/2023 10:42

Honestly, if you can afford it get at least 5 of everything (trousers polos jumpers). It means much less stress!

In addition to washing hassle etc, things tend to go missing

Biggest tip of all is to name everything!

Theelephantinthecastle · 30/04/2023 10:45

We have 5x everything and also 2x in the size up as spares.

If your school has a summer fair, they will likely be a uniform stall - might be worth seeing if you can go even though he hasn't started yet

SleepingStandingUp · 30/04/2023 10:46

I'm clearly lazy. 5 sets of everything. 3 kids. 15 sets.

Couple of logo t-shirts brought new for eldest. 1 logo TShirt new for each twin plus hand me downs. Same for jumpers
Rest supermarket stuff.
Trousers all from supermarkets and Pep and Co who do surprisingly decent trousers. New for eldest, hand me downs and new for twins.
Standard coat - winter coat, rain coat.

PE kit is worn for PE lesson only.
Twins are messy eaters so never a clean jumper, rarely clean trousers at end of day. Go from uniform to Pajamas

Watchthedoormat · 30/04/2023 10:50

We had

3 polo shirts (came in pkts of 3) cost £7-£10 depending on age/size -asda or tesco)
2 pairs trousers (again £10-£14 for two depending on size- asda or tesco)
2 school logo jumpers (approx £10each from school supplier)

Logo school jacket wasn't cool after reception age and neither were the polo shirts.

2 polo's for pe and two pairs of shorts ( no logo- again asda/tesco)

Vallmo47 · 30/04/2023 10:54

2 logo school jumpers
3-4 trousers (often sold as a pair)
3-4 polo shirts (again often sold as multipack)
1 pair of decent black shoes
PE kit: 2 T-shirts
1 pair joggers/shorts
1 black fleece for colder days

I personally wouldn’t buy anything with a logo that isn’t a requirement- chances are very few can afford to purchase those and so they will “appeal” to children who think finders must also mean keepers. ;) A lot of things disappear in primary and I’ve sometimes recovered items years later where some lovely human being has cut off tags with my child’s name in order to claim there was no name attached.

Please don’t go nuts buying things, only get the essentials. The fun will very soon wear out. My rule is “If you really like something and want to see it again, don’t risk it during school hours!”

alyceflowers · 30/04/2023 10:55

My reception child goes in pe kit twice a week.
We have:
two PE tops, two PE trousers, 1 PE jumper
3 polo shirts
2 trouser, 1 dress
1 logo jumper, 2 plain cardigans

Basically an outfit per day. In reception assume that every day they will come out with paint, lunch, mud and whiteboard marker on their clothes.

LlynTegid · 30/04/2023 10:55

How quick can you wash and dry clothes, especially in winter? That may affect your decision as to how many are needed.

Agree about minimum things with logos.

Sprogonthetyne · 30/04/2023 11:05

We have 3 logged jumpers then a set supermarket top/trousers for each day. Before you buy check if they go in in pe kit. Mine do twice a week so have 2x pe and 3x normal uniform.

I wouldn't both with the logo coat, sounds like a nightmare for a bunch of 4/5yo to work out which identical coat is theirs at the start of each playtime.

CatOnTheChair · 30/04/2023 11:07

6 tops, as they come in packs of 3.
6 trousers, as they come in packs of 2.
1 logo'd jumper
2 supermarket jumpers.
Don't get the school coat - it's much easier to pick out your coat if it's different to everyone else's.
We don't have a tumble drier, and have mucky kids!

Sprogonthetyne · 30/04/2023 11:08

I also have an emergency supermarket jumper I'm the school colour which will do on the day they get weetabix down the last logo jumper.

TeenDivided · 30/04/2023 11:14

The PTA may well run a second hand uniform shop of some sort. At DD's primary there was always loads of age 5/6 stuff that looked nearly new.
Ask the school as if they have a sale coming up you could get stuff for low prices.

DDs had 2 sets only at primary, they were reasonably neat eaters and didn't roll around in the mud. It isn't like puberty when they need a clean shirt daily.

HurricanesPoua · 30/04/2023 11:19

To avoid the issue of name labels being cut out of uniforms, use a Sharpie (silver for dark coloured clothes) to write the name on a part of the clothing e.g trouser pocket bag or taped seam. We had an expensive PE hoody turn up after 3 months, with the label removed. Teacher saw it was my Ds's because it was named on the raised seam of the shoulder...
