Wrong spelling name

purpleme12 · 01/04/2023 23:31

My child got a certificate.
But had her name spelt wrong on it. Not an alternative spelling, it's not a name at all.
It's really annoyed me. It smacks of someone rushing and not bothering to check.
Would you say something after Easter?

What’s it for? Formal exams or something they’ll need to show future employers - yes. Cycling proficiency or learner of the week - no.

purpleme12 · 01/04/2023 23:37

A certificate in a subject.
It's really grated on me.

What do you mean by certificate in a subject? For what? GCSE?

JustAnotherManicNameChange · 02/04/2023 00:42

Printed or written?

Needmorelego · 02/04/2023 00:48

Just tell them.
If it's an in-school certificate they can just print a new one.
Mistakes happen.

thebaneofmylifeisacat · 02/04/2023 00:53

Mmmmmm

Tiredforfive45 · 04/04/2023 14:47

Someone probably WAS rushing and didn’t have time to check.

Just politely ask for a replacement if you are that bothered about it.

PathOfLeastResitance · 04/04/2023 16:41

The person who did this, did it deliberately to annoy you. Or maybe it was a minor error like humans make sometimes.

Phillipa12 · 04/04/2023 17:15

Personally, I would mention it and ask for a replacement. I have this happen on a regular basis with one of my dc and he's now in year 4, his name is also not unusual, i ended up having words, it still happens. Once possibly twice is fair enough, but anymore often than that is not acceptable.

do you check all your work to make sure there’s no spelling mistakes on it?! It’s a mistake. You’re making a mountain out of a molehill. Just ask for another one.

So you're saying I'm making a mountain out of a molehill but yet at the same time saying to ask for another one?

That's probably exactly what happened.

suzyscat · 04/04/2023 18:01

You can and should get it rectified without making a fuss. It's better to point it out to ensure it doesn't happen again but no need to complain or ruin your mood over it. Mine and DC's names are always being gotten wrong. It happens.

TimeForMeToF1y · 04/04/2023 18:08

Just ask for a new certificate pleas as there is a type on the one given out

How is it anything more complicated than that?

Yes, obviously.

But equally, this is just a mistake and if it's on something that doesn't matter I'd let it go. A child's name repeatedly spelled wrong is something I'd raise.

Lonelyplanet · 04/04/2023 18:18

If it is important to you, then politely let them know. My children frequently had their name spelt wrong on certificates as their are alternative spellings of our name. I usually corrected it myself unless it was something important.

I'm a teacher and can see how this happens. Yes they probably were rushing. I have to do most jobs in school in a rush as otherwise they wouldn't get everything done. If you're feeling really annoyed by it vent your frustration on your mp and ask tor better funding for schools so that admin staff have enough paid hours to do things properly.

Teapleasemilknosugar · 04/04/2023 18:23

It's really annoyed me but it's not even your certificate. Is your child bothered?

Daffodilwoman · 04/04/2023 18:23

I think it depends.
If your child is Stephen and they have spelt it Steven then yes I would point it out saying it’s Stephen with a ph.
If you have spelt it Steevvene then no it’s something you will always have to deal with.

purpleme12 · 04/04/2023 18:42

It's the normal spelling.
Although interesting that you think the correct spelling of a name is less important if someone's spelt it a different way

loobylou10 · 04/04/2023 18:55

You haven't said what the certificate is for - like a Pp asked - an important certificate you'll need to keep or a 'star of the week' type thing. Either way I guess it's pretty straightforward to politely ask for it to be redone (but I wouldn't be bothered if its the latter!)

CurlewKate · 04/04/2023 20:25

What do you want to happen? Do you want someone punished? Because surely otherwise you'd just go to the office and say "There's been a mistake on this certificate, it's actually spelled Jaymes. Could you possibly print off a replacement. Thank you!"

I don't believe that I ever gave an indication that I wanted someone punished.
Honestly some of the implications on some posts about what I'm like and what I'm going to do about this etc are so strange

My elder DD had this a lot. The most amusing example I have is her spelling book where they tried 3 times to spell our surname right and still got it wrong. (Oddly younger DD never has the same problem though). Its a normal but unusual name. On printed stuff more understandable as Autocorrect changes it.

School were always apologetic when it was pointed out.

It does seem petty but names ate considered part of identity by many.

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/04/2023 20:36

Just politely ask for one with the correct spelling. It is quite likely that the teacher didn't write it but gave the job to admin staff or a parent helper. It is easily rectified and I'm sure no harm was intended.

CurlewKate · 04/04/2023 21:12

@purpleme12 Then I don't understand why you're asking the question!
