Wrong spelling name

My child got a certificate.
But had her name spelt wrong on it. Not an alternative spelling, it's not a name at all.
It's really annoyed me. It smacks of someone rushing and not bothering to check.
Would you say something after Easter?

You haven't said what the certificate is for - like a Pp asked - an important certificate you'll need to keep or a 'star of the week' type thing. Either way I guess it's pretty straightforward to politely ask for it to be redone (but I wouldn't be bothered if its the latter!)

Star of the week, I reckon. Are there any important certificates in primary?

loobylou10 · 04/04/2023 21:23

@Teapleasemilknosugar yes! Chose your battles I think. Not something I would get annoyed at.

jammiedodgerfriday · 04/04/2023 21:29

My daughter's surname is always being spelt wrong and after the 6th time of this happening I said something cos it bothered her.
If she hadn't said anything to me I'd have probably just left it.
All official stuff from her school has her name spelt correctly so it is just a case of the teacher not having enough time and probably having far more important things to do than fill out certificates so she rushes through them.

Needmorelego · 04/04/2023 21:36

@jammiedodgerfriday why did you wait until the 6th time before saying something. It was probably an honest mistake but as you never said anything you didn't give a chance for it to fixed.

CurlewKate · 04/04/2023 21:36

Certificates are important to children. I remember when my dd got a Headteacher's Award sticker and accidentally ate it. 🤣. Which is why politely asking for a replacement is the way to go. Simple.

Star of the Week certificates are very important to the children and a lot of parents keep them.

Because it didn't bother me enough to say anything but after the 6th certificate came home my daughter said it bothered her so I said something.

If it was happening on official letters or reports from the school I'd have said something straightaway but as it was only on handwritten 'star pupil' awards I wasn't that worried.

YouknoweverythingJonSnow · 04/04/2023 21:45

I work in a school office and had over 100 attendance certs to write on the last day of term - had to be done on the last day obviously, and in time for the assembly. I did check as I went, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a mistake, it's human error in these circumstances. If you asked for a replacement I would apologise and replace straightaway.

ASixPackAndTheRadio · 04/04/2023 21:46

Just politely tell them and ask to have another one. I guarantee they’ll say ‘oh sorry, of course, give us a couple of days and we’ll sort it’.

Mistakes happen. No big deal.

Buzzer3555 · 04/04/2023 21:49

I get your frustration my son got a certificate and the teacher spelt his name wrong. He was in year six in a small school. He's 26 now and it still irritates me

Fromwetome · 04/04/2023 21:51

Did you check the grammar in the title of your post? It’s incorrect and doesn’t make sense. Smacks of someone in a rush who didn’t check.
Obviously it’s pretty easily done. Should I report it to mumsnet or just ignore it?

As I said above quite possibly not the teacher who wrote it. You should have mentioned it at the time instead of stewing over it for nearly 20 years

I'm aware it's incorrect grammar I was abbreviating purely for the title to get the message across, not writing a sentence.
It's your choice if you want to report or ignore.

I don't see the issue. If it bothers you that much, ask politely for a replacement.
If it doesn't, move on.
And yes, I'd imagine it was done in a huge rush like every other job in school because it has to be. It was probably already written in a teachers lunch time or evening, but I'm sure they would be more than happy to do that again for you if it bothers you.
In the meantime, lobby your mp and support school staff to get proper funding so that people actually have time to do stuff properly and aren't perpetually exhausted from working 60+ hour weeks for your child, only to get stroppy parents having a go at them about the certificate they wrote late at night after a 12 hour working day where they misspelled something 🙄

purpleme12 · 04/04/2023 22:02

Gosh I'm unsure where I put that I would be going in to have a massive go at this teacher 🤣

Star of the Week certificates are very important to the children and a lot of parents keep them.

Valued by some, maybe, certainly not important though.

Hungryfrogs23 · 04/04/2023 22:07

@purpleme12 "It's really annoyed me. It smacks of someone rushing and not bothering to check."

The point is that it's not about "not bothering". That in itself is a rude assumption and implies a lack of care.

What about being knackered? Spinning too many plates that day? Making a human error? There are lots of reasons other than not bothering.

"It's really annoyed me" Again, it's a minor, easily rectifiable problem.

You may not have outwardly said you were going to have a go at the teacher but your whole tone is derisory and derogatory.

Hercisback · 04/04/2023 22:09

How is a primary school certificate still provoking an emotion response in you now your child is an adult? I’ve misspelled my own name before.

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/04/2023 22:13

Teapleasemilknosugar · 04/04/2023 22:06

It depends what you consider to be important. As a teacher I believed a child's pride in their work and self esteem were important. Just because they won't use it to apply for a job doesn't make it less important at the time. The way a child's name is spelled is always important.

loobylou10 · 04/04/2023 22:16

@Hungryfrogs23 'You may not have outwardly said you were going to have a go at the teacher but your whole tone is derisory and derogatory.'
Absolutely spot on ⬆️

Ok. I'm honestly not bothered enough to get into arguments on here

I have a Freddy who gets Freddie all the time - including some family members and school reports. When it was spelt wrong on his County Cricket photo I did complain because he’ll have that forever. Otherwise I let it go.

Jellybean23 · 04/04/2023 22:19

Having the correct spelling on certificates was very important to my son. He used to be very upset at the mistake which happened at both primary and secondary school. I always asked (and got) a replacement certificate.

Snugglemonkey · 04/04/2023 22:45

When I was younger there was a TV character with my first (uncommon) name in a really popular TV programme. My teacher sent my school report home to Mr and Mrs TV character's surname. My mum was annoyed and complained. He managed to make exactly the same mistake again with my summer report 😂
