Yr1 writing

My Yr1 daughter is a very capable reader (the school tested her reading age and it was 11) and good at maths (mostly doing Yr3 work allocated by the teacher) but her writing is more average (sample attached - this was what she wrote when I asked her to write a story). It's a bit frustrating because I think she could do better if she put in more effort, but she's not great at persevering with things she finds more difficult (partly I think because she is used to finding some things quite easy). I would really like to help her get her writing to "greater depth" standard instead of "expected". Can anyone suggest some tips? She is also quite stubborn...

I personally think it's very good for. 6 year old

Perennis · 09/02/2023 12:56

What an awful post. Your child is doing brilliantly but you're finding it 'frustrating' that she doesn't 'put in more effort'. Get a grip!

Handwriting doesn't even matter in the real world.

Chimna · 09/02/2023 12:58

This is ridiculous. My yr1 son is nowhere near that, and I'm certainly not going to start piling pressure on my 6 year old! Give the poor kid a break!

elij · 09/02/2023 13:03

The writing is great -- ignore other kids who appear to have neater writing as your daughter is most likely ahead in other areas. And perfect calligraphy isn't an assessment at any level of life.

It's just the way things are -- I don't think it's possible to really improve hand writing over the long term so I wouldn't worry.

I feel around 4-5 you can see if a child will have good handwriting or amazing (a small minority)

CannonCaboodle · 09/02/2023 13:05

🙄

Twizbe · 09/02/2023 13:09

My mum used to teach a very able late primary girl. They did a maths test one day and the girl scored 97%.

The girl cried and had a panic attack because it wasn't 100% and she'd get in trouble at home.

My mum's heart broke.

Her writing is very good for year 1. Let her be 6.

R0ckets · 09/02/2023 13:09

Gosh what a horrible post she's doing amazingly and yet you're frustrated with her. Poor kid. Her writing of fine she's only 6 for goodness sake. Let her enjoy just writing stories and stop trying to push her. Just enjoy the fact she likes to learn and be happy that she is doing well.

RachelSq · 09/02/2023 13:15

Blimey - being so dismissive of your very talented child is pretty sad.

I’d say that writing is pretty good for a Yr 1 and I assume that’s the praise you’re fishing for here?

redbigbananafeet · 09/02/2023 13:15

I agree that your disappointment and frustration that your daughter isn't excelling in every area is disappointing and frustrating to read!

If you want her to improve she needs to vary her adjectives, verbs and sentence openers.

RoseslnTheHospital · 09/02/2023 13:20

That's a wonderful piece of writing for a 6 or 7 year old in Year 1.

This is Year 1 end of year expectations for greater depth level:

The pupil can, after discussion with the teacher:

  • begin to write effectively and coherently for different purposes
  • join words and clauses with a variety of commonly used conjunctions (e.g. and, but, because)
  • use capital letters and full stops mostly correctly
  • spell most Y1 common exception* words accurately and make phonically-plausible attempts at spelling unfamiliar words
  • form most letters correctly.

Which do you think she is failing on?

user2729 · 09/02/2023 17:10

wow...is this a real query? just read with her, discuss the stories and let her be a child pls

Choconut · 09/02/2023 17:33

She's 6 for god's sake. She's going to grow up never feeling good enough no matter what she does if you're not careful . And that can lead to all sorts of mental health issues that would make being a gazillion years ahead of everyone else totally irrelevant as she won't be able to perform due to anxiety or because she totally rebels.

ZebraKid71 · 09/02/2023 19:48

Everyone could do better if they put more effort in, but life is about balance, and she's 5/6 years old - she's writing in school and writing stories at home, how much do you really think she has left to give? As long as the writing is legible it serves its purpose, much more to a well rounded child.

Fameinaframe · 09/02/2023 20:21

Most of my year 4s can't write like that! 😁😑

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 09/02/2023 20:22

Not so humble brag OP?

Leave the poor child alone, she is doing really well.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/02/2023 20:26

TL:DR My daughter is brilliant at maths and reading but she's just not trying to be brilliant at writing, how do I pile on the pressure and make her live up to my expectations?

Reindear · 09/02/2023 20:27

Is this a stealth brag? Because surely you can see that that piece of work is excellent for a 5 or 6 year old

SleepingStandingUp · 09/02/2023 20:27

Or is it "my daughter is amazing, how can I stealth brag on MN and get everyone to tell me she's the most amazing child they've ever read about?"

puppacup · 09/02/2023 20:29

Maybe you need a tutor. My newborns handwriting was similar.

LoveBluey · 09/02/2023 20:32

Oh do jog on with your praise seeking post. It's bloody brilliant writing for Y1 (but your know that) and I would be over the moon if my child had handwriting anywhere near like that.

As it is she really struggles with writing and needs lots of extra support and intervention and is so far off achieving that level that your post makes me want to cry. I give her nothing but praise because I know that ultimately it's not the end of the world and she will get there in the end. I think you should focus on all the strengths and stop being so critical.

wigwoowig · 09/02/2023 20:34

Are you joking? Poor kid.

bellsbuss · 09/02/2023 20:38

One of mine could barely hold a pencil correctly at that age, got there in the end and is doing really well. They are still so young at that age, ease off with the pressure.

bakewellbride · 09/02/2023 20:41

Does she have to be working at year 3 level or whatever at everything??

She's in year 1. That's a lovely piece of year 1 work (I used to teach). That's the end of it.

She's 6, maybe she can be a kid and have fun rather than being pushed in all subjects.

Spacemonkey2016 · 09/02/2023 20:42

I can't roll my eyes enough at this post. You know her writing is good for Year 1. Let's hope your daughter does too.
