My Yr1 daughter is a very capable reader (the school tested her reading age and it was 11) and good at maths (mostly doing Yr3 work allocated by the teacher) but her writing is more average (sample attached - this was what she wrote when I asked her to write a story). It's a bit frustrating because I think she could do better if she put in more effort, but she's not great at persevering with things she finds more difficult (partly I think because she is used to finding some things quite easy). I would really like to help her get her writing to "greater depth" standard instead of "expected". Can anyone suggest some tips? She is also quite stubborn...

That piece of writing well exceeds the expectations for a child of her age. The best of the year 1’s in our current crop are just about managing a couple of sentences. Who is suggesting otherwise?
I would suggest you stop worrying about her academics and look at stretching her in other ways. Music, dance, swimming….. whatever.

I hope you aren’t making your daughter aware of this ridiculous pressure you’re piling on her!

Reason 3498 why I left teaching 😑

Did you just say "write a story" with no context? Maybe she could have formed a plan/plot first and thought about a beginning, a middle and an end. Maybe she could have then have thought about time conjunctions and expanded noun phrases Hmm Or maybe you could just enjoy her being a small child who is academically and stop trying to push her.

This is a wonderful piece of writing for a kid who's only half way through Y1 and I really hope you're telling her so..... And she's excelling to a ridiculous point in reading and Maths by the sounds of it. Mine is in reception but only just able to write a single sentence if she really concentrates and she's at the top of her class. I can't see her being able to do what your dd has in a year's time.

It's good to be actively interested in your kid's education but you need to nurture her not pressurise her. She's doing beyond great and if you pressurise her you might create a whole bunch of problems which are far more debilitating than writing skills (which she has anyway) A common risk factor for eating disorders, for example, is overly perfectionist and controlling parents. I think you need to keep this in mind and just enjoy your dd for the treasure she is.

Are you thinking about 7+? In which case maybe ask those that done this process for suggestions etc.

She’s not really concerned; it’s just a stealth boast!

If she is she's doing a bad job because her attitude is coming across as borderline abusive tbh
