Muswell Hill State Primary v Channing

Sorry, I know the topic of state v private has been done to death but nonetheless I would appreciate any perspectives.

We live in Muswell Hill and are fortunate to have several well-performing state schools near us. My little girl has also been offered a place at reception in Channing School in Highgate for next September. We didn't apply to lots of private schools as I had previously been set on state. Channing is fairly close to us, and on a bus route, though further than the likely state option.

I think my daughter is quite intelligent - she is very eloquent, can do simple addition/subtraction and can read unfamiliar words/sentences on her own etc.

My DH and I are really unsure whether Channing is worth it for a bright pupil. On the one hand, she will get more individual attention than at a state school, but on the other, its A Level results/university destinations are only ok, and not particularly better than our local state secondary, Fortismere. Channing's results for science are particularly disappointing. So maybe sending her there would be a waste of money from an academic perspective and what you are really paying for is nice facilities and for your daughter to be formed into a naice young lady? But maybe those things are worth paying for??

We just want to give her the best start and make sure she is challenged and achieves her potential. Channing's fees are significant for us but not the deciding factor. We don't want her personality to be smothered (Channing seems very 'straight'/naice). Both my DH and I are very involved parents, we read a lot with her and she goes to a couple of extra-curricular classes which she really enjoys and which we will keep up. So she would have the advantage of parental input wherever she goes. We probably should have made applications to more academic private schools but as that ship has sailed at least for reception, what decision would you make in our position?

TIA for any perspectives.

@FlawlessSquid it is nice to imagine that our daughter could go to any of these schools but this would mean our son going to a totally different school (probably not that close by) and I struggle to see how parents manage to get their kids to schools so far away whilst also getting to work in the morning? With two children in private schools I would definitely have to be in a full time or nearly full time position as would my partner. How do people make it work?

Depends on where you live. For OP is do-able. City has both boys and girls; Habs also have both girl and boys. You can always choose a nearby school then do 11+, travel by tube then as teenage is a lot easier.

What have OP and other Channing offer holders on this thread decided with regard to Channing vs state? We are still deciding if we should take our Channing offer or go with a local state school (we won’t know for a while which state school we got into and like some more than others). It feels like a very hard decision and we feel we don’t have enough of a sense of what Channing is like. We were thrilled to be offered a place but have the same concerns as OP about expense and also the educational value added and atmosphere of the school.

@Claraa2018 I know someone who turned down the 4+ offer and went to a local state school. Reapplied for an occasional vacancy when her DC was 7 or 8 and got in then.

Claraa2018 · 05/02/2023 20:50

@Soma thank you. Why did the DC you know only go to the state school for a few years? Did she like Channing once she took up the place? I think if we don’t take the reception place now that we would only try again at 11 + as we wouldn’t want to unsettle her (unless she really ends up disliking the state school). This also makes turning it down now a more significant decision for us.

Soma · 05/02/2023 20:55

@Claraa2018 parents thought the state school wasn't pushing their DC enough.

Soma · 05/02/2023 20:56

@Claraa2018 what's your state school option? I have a few friends in the area with DC at both state and independent.

Just wondering what everyone here has decided to do?

hydriotaphia · 24/08/2023 15:34

We decided not to go for Channing. I am sure it is a lovely school, but I feel happy about the decision.

We also turned down our place. We are sending our daughter state school. We also really liked Channing but weren't fully sure about it.x

Hello,

Sorry this is such an old post to reply to but I’m having a debate with my husband about Channing and STEM and whether they’ve advertised in the past.

Can you remember which bus routes you saw the advertisements?

Soma · 03/11/2023 18:26

@Leeleemum2021 have friends with DDs at Channing and they rate the STEM teaching.

I hope it's ok to jump on this post. My daughter has offers from Channing and Habs at 4+. We live about 10 minutes away from Channing (and about 30-40 minutes from Habs). We have an older daughter already at Habs and she is happy and well supported - we chose between the same schools for her and Habs instantly felt like the right option for her. However, I'm leaning more towards Channing for my younger daughter - she is also very bright but is more creative and I think it would be nice for her to avoid the longer journey and have a more local group of friends. I don't want to deprive her of the same opportunities if Habs is seen as a better school, in terms of academics and facilities, but equally Habs ranked below Channing for its 2023 GCSE results (albeit it did better for A Levels) so perhaps there's not as much in it between them academically as perhaps there used to be. I'm finding it hard to make a decision and would be grateful for any views!
