Expected Reading in Year 2

ggmom87 · 23/03/2022 23:01

My March-born, Year 2 DD is reading Stage 8 / purple books. I think she’s been ready for the next level for awhile now. She’s reading quite confidently. But at Parents Evening the other day, her teacher said she wanted her in reading intervention with a one-on-one tutor. This came as a shock to me because I thought my daughter was doing well. When I look at charts online, it seems she’s fairly average. I mean, if they want to give her extra help that’s fine I guess. But what exactly is the expectation at this age? Reading intervention just seems a bit over the top.

I teach year 2 and most of mine are on Purple, just moving to Gold..Could the intervention be aimed more at comprehension?

LongSummers · 24/03/2022 00:45

Think it may depend on the school and whether independent or state. My summer born Y1 DC is on white and a few of classmates are school.

White level is the expectation at the end of KS1. To be reading purple in the Spring Term is fine if they are reading them pretty fliently, especially after all the disruption of Covid and the need for this year's Year 2 cohort to have to take the phonics screening check in the Autumn Term. Ofsted expects reading books to be closely linked to the phonics that is being taught in class. Turquoise is the highest book band which matches phase 5 phonics which should be completed by the end of year 1 and then revised at the beginning of Year 2. At the beginning of this year I found that several of my Year 2 children came up on orange but weren't actually familiar with all of the phase 5 sounds that were contained within them.

raspberryjamchicken · 24/03/2022 01:43

fluently

icklekid · 24/03/2022 01:47

Maybe they want to push for her to be greater depth hence the intervention?

VashtaNerada · 24/03/2022 02:09

To be age expected at Year 2 it’s not just about being able to decode. They also need to demonstrate a certain level of fluency and comprehension. Maybe it’s these elements she needs help with? If she’s getting an intervention it’s fine to ask for clarity.

TizerorFizz · 24/03/2022 05:26

Does she do paired reading for pleasure with you at home? Does she talk to you about what she reads and do you ask her questions? This might be helpful to extend her understanding of what she’s reading. My DDs always had extra books from the library to extend their vocabulary and enjoyment of books and words. It all helps and school reading books are very dull!

ggmom87 · 24/03/2022 08:06

I asked about comprehension and that’s not the concern 🤷🏻‍♀️ Purple is just “below expectations”.

Just try a more varied diet of books. DDs liked poetry books. Lots of great writers for emerging readers.

HSHorror · 24/03/2022 12:50

When dc1 was y1 purple/tirquoise was the target for end of that year and then most became free readers in y2.

CakeRabbit · 24/03/2022 18:10

Some children read very fluently but haven't got a scooby doo how to answer a comprehension question

nutellingyou · 24/03/2022 18:18

It'll be because they think she can do a bit better with compression and inference before she does her SATs in May. 🙄

Smileyduck · 24/03/2022 20:06

My young in the year boy moved to gold a few weeks ago and is loving the 'Happy Family' books he is reading. He is in group 2 of 5 read write inc groups so purple would be no lower than group 3 of his perfectly ordinary/normal intake primary school

sindysindysindy · 24/03/2022 20:28

My daughter is in year 2. She is reading chapter books likes I do. She is reading just like me. Practice improves a lot - 20 mins a day will be ok for her age.

ggmom87 · 24/03/2022 20:47

I forgot how obnoxious some Mumsnet users are when it comes to the topic of reading. I’m not asking to hear about the amazing reading abilities of your child. I already know that lots of children are better readers. There is a wide range of ability at this age. I’m trying to establish what is the expectation, but I should probably just seek that clarity with the teacher.

Thanks, this gives me a good indication. Oh and we just discovered those books too and my daughter loves them.

You’re probably right 😏

I think it sounds like she’s on track. Some primary schools are ridiculously pushy now, they forget that the 2014 curriculum changes made the ‘achieving the expected standard’ level higher than before. I am slightly strange and have some of my old school books, I was considered one of the brightest in my class yet when I look back at my year 2 English book the standard is so much lower than what me ‘not meeting expectations’ year 2 DS is doing!

Hollyhead · 24/03/2022 20:53

And DS is reading white and is considered reading beyond the expected standard according to the latest parents evening. I think book bands are dealt with differently with different schools.

sindysindysindy · 24/03/2022 21:57

@ggmom87 what I am trying to say is if she reads 20 mins every day I am sure she will be able to read even chapter books soon. I am not talking about the ability, its just about the routine and practice, thats it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/03/2022 22:02

I'm now worried because DS's Y2 class aren't doing the banded books anymore, and it's not because they are reading geniuses (especially DS). I assumed it was normal for Y2 but I can see from this thread that it isn't.

ggmom87 · 24/03/2022 22:16

What are they reading? Maybe the books being sent home are at level but just not on a banded reading scheme?

OP posts:
TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/03/2022 22:22

They can pick their own books, and DS is lazy so he just keeps picking Dogman.

resipsa · 24/03/2022 23:01

This is useful for the range expected in Yr 2, I hope.

I taught year two last year and although there were no actual SATS we were still assessing them ourselves.

SLT wanted us to focus on the children who were expected but could reach greater depth. Those on the cusp. Who would have been GD if it hadn't been for covid.
