Expected Reading in Year 2

My March-born, Year 2 DD is reading Stage 8 / purple books. I think she’s been ready for the next level for awhile now. She’s reading quite confidently. But at Parents Evening the other day, her teacher said she wanted her in reading intervention with a one-on-one tutor. This came as a shock to me because I thought my daughter was doing well. When I look at charts online, it seems she’s fairly average. I mean, if they want to give her extra help that’s fine I guess. But what exactly is the expectation at this age? Reading intervention just seems a bit over the top.

My DS is year 1 and only on light blue. So as he's not going to complete two more colours in the next term does that mean he's behind? It doesn't make much sense when as parents you get a report saying reaching expected standards then suddenly they spring concerns on you like OP has experienced.

Pawcontrol - does he know all the phonic sounds?
We've been doing reading chest.

Dd is suddenly a lot more fluent over the last few weeks. And taki g only 5min per book

@HSHorror maybe not I'll try find a list and test him. He's very much a sight reader and has been poor at decoding, so that prob why. He reads books at home which are harder and not phonics ones, he seems to learn words after seeing them a few times.

@Hollyhead is I think right and book bands are decided very differently between schools.

DS's old school it was very much a case of what they could actually read fluently, based on them reading with the teacher. DS's new school it's all linked to their ability to answer some pretty difficult comprehension questions in a formal benchmarking process particularly around inference.

At his new school purple would be squarely meeting expectations. However, the kids can read many bands above their official book for pleasure. Would your DD be able to read something like a picture book or an early reader to herself for pleasure?
